I read that Quiroga was stabbed to death a few years ago. Sad.
really? sad, as you say.

from memory a draw or 115-114/113 to Quiroga. typical of fights with 2/3 very close/swing rounds, I just recall thinking from Akeem's perspective there were too many periods of relative inactivity during rounds. another fight that still makes me wince and gasp every time i see it.

I remember when Robert Welch (the color analyst along with Sam Smith) said, "Kid Akeem is not well. Kid Akeem is not well at all." Then the telecast got off the air soon after. No post-fight interview with Quiroga, even; he left the ring.

Arguello v Mancini, Gomez v Pintor were both extremely competitive, brutal fights in which the losers essentially got beaten down at the end. Both came back to win belts, although Pintor was KO'd in three of his next eight fights and won only seven of his last 16.
Another brutal, 15-round beat down was the IBF bantamweight fight, Orlando Canizales v Kevin Seabrooks. If Canizales could have punched a little harder, it would have been over sooner, but he essentially chopped Seabrooks up for 15 rounds. Seabrooks was only 25 when Canizales stopped him, but he lost eight of his last 10, getting KO'd in seven of those.

These are great shouts.
Its those longer fights in which a fighter gets stopped late that are the most serious beatings long term.
Getting belted out right away seems merciful.
Joe Louis vs John Henry Lewis is an example of a guy who liked the other guy so he got him outta there right away. No sustained beating.

Pug, I might have picked Hagler-Hamsho I, but I remember having to suffer through that horrible Weaver v James "Keep Away" Tillis heavyweight title fight on the same card and it effed up my memory. They should have banned boxing at the Rosemont Horizon after that fight

Yep, that fight was horrible. No fun watching it live either. I don't know what was going through Quicks head that night. There was a couple times in subsequent years where I felt like asking him about it. But, what would be the point? Nobody knows better than him what coulda been. Funny that you mention boxing at Rosemont Giacomino. I don't think there were any more big fights there after that at all. I could be wrong. There were cards. I just don't remember anything big. Maybe David Diaz but not sure.

Now it's the Allstate Arena, right? I think Diaz fought Morales there.

Immediately David Reid- Tito Trinadad comes to mind. By the end Reid's already dodgy eye was hangin off and he could hardly stand, how the corner allowed it to go that far I'll never know.

The funny thing is that Reid IMHO won the last round. Don't know why Halpern didn't stop it in the eleventh, though.

I think a proper beating should last at least 5 rounds.
Pacquiao - Hatton, for example was more of an ass kicking than a brutal beating, if that makes any sense 8)

I haven't read all the posts so I'll throw some in that I've seen.

Mundine v Soliman II
Pacquiao v Diaz.
Katsidis v Amonsot, not one sided, but they beat the piss out of each other
Klitschko v Briggs
Mayweather v Corrales
Pacquiao v Barrera
De lahoya v Mayorga

Didn't Amonsot get a bloodclot?

Not entirely sure, I remember he was out of action with some sort of problem for a while. And both fighters looked pretty ordinary afterwards as well, if I remember correctly

Saad brought up Foreman/Cooney, so other shorties needed to be given their due.

I could be wrong here but I seem to remember Amonsot had some sort of blood clot or brain scan irregularity that was later cleared but he had some sort of accident at home that required him being out for a couple of years. Can't find the news story though!

I know that alot of people regard Joe Calzaghe v Jeff Lacy a beating, but when I watched back a couple of times on DVD and I always have regarded as a dismantling in my eyes because Calzaghe was never a heavy one punch KO artist, more a boxer who overwhelmed and worn down opponents through his fast hands and high work rate and through that he broke dismantled Lacy a man who the Americans were hyping up as a 168lb pound Mike Tyson physically and mentally even though Calzaghe left him bleeding from the nose and cuts above the eyes. Also any takers on JMM v Michael Katsidis, okay Katsidis dropped JMM early but Marquez made a right mess of him before Kenny Bayless intervened in the 9th round to save Katsidis from a further shallacking.

I wouldn't say it was a beating. Katsidis was dishing out some good shots as well, aside from just dropping Marquez. Guerrero Katsidis might be worth a mention though

It was Gatti took an awful shallacking in there because Mayweather was so damn quick. Another beating or two I think of are worth mentioning.

Vitali K v Samuel Peter
Wladmir K v Peter. Wladimir currently have hurried it up a little bit.
Kotsya Tzuyu dished out an awful one to JCC Snr as well.

Matthew Hilton-Wilfred Benitez (This one was very sad.Benitez really should have been retired a good year or so before this debacle took place). Had the 82 version of Benitez been in there,it would've been a Benitez clinic but sadly,Wilfred was quite faded and very hittable by the time this shadow version of himself was matched against the LiL Mighty StrongBoy Canadian with the Heavy Hands ready to dismantle any sitting target that was available to serve as a living heavybag).

Jose "Pipino" Cuevas-Pete Ranzany (This was one sick beatdown. Its a wonder Ranzany wasnt completely ruined or killed after that brutal slaughter ! Ranzany had some amazing recupperative resiliance for withstanding that beating enough to live and fight another day.I saw his Tko loss to Leonard and yeah,he got beat up pretty good in that one but not nearly as badly as he did against the brutal onslaught Cuevas delivered upon him) .

Sugar Ray Leonard-Andy Price ( Only lasted a couple of minutes into the 1st round but i remember re-watching this one on YT around 4 or 5 years ago and re-watching it made me feel so bad for Andy Price, the way Leonard pummeled em into the ropes and kept reigning Killer Ko blows very similiar to the killer flurries he'suse a couple years later in his war with Hearns. After Price went down,he went to get up and then something just went on him and he slumped back down looking like he was in alot of pain, agony actually.Call me a pansy or softy but it was Very upsetting to watch that one actually. Very brutal and humiliating looking beatdown) .

Ray Mercer-Tommy Morrison (This fight was unique.Tommy was beating the crap out of Mercer for 4 rounds, especially with the body shots, then Mercer caught Morrison against the ropes in the 5th while Tommy's arms were too tired to defend,Rocked Morrison, then Proceeded to batter Morrison with a huge barrage of killer ko blows while Morrison was long gone. Scary stuff. Almost wound up being the HW version of Griffith-Paret) .

Ray won the fourth round, too; Morrison whooped him for the first three.
Ali sure gave Wepner a horrible beating for the last 6 rounds of that fight after the KD.

Cheers for the reminder about Pacquiao beating David Diaz senseless for 9 rounds. I forgot about that one. Also Roy Jones dished a few schallackings in his pomp.

v Richard Hall. I remember Larry Merchant stating that Wayne Kelly should be pistol whipped for letting the fight go on as long as it did and also Jim Lampley was also imploring Kelly to stop it.

v Vinny Pazenza. Was not even touched by Vinny Paz even so still made a right mess of him.

Are the first two that stand out.
