Featherweights: Vicente Saldivar vs Marco Antonio Barrera

Post by elmersalsa »

I don't see a knockout, but the best featherweight of the 1960s vs the best featherweight of the 2000s. Who wins?

I would go with Saldivar in a very close, exciting fight.

MAB played Saldivar in a movie about Howard Winstone, I believe. Just a funny side note.

Golden southpaw might outbox him in 12 rounds because he would sharpen up if the fight was less than 15 rounds, while Barrera on the other hand, tired late even in his prime. Still Barrera is a skillful fighter who on the inside would get the better with the jab, cross, left hook, combo. Statistically explained, many losses near the prime came to southpaws.

He lost to Jones, not a southpaw.
He lost to Morales, not a southpaw.
That leaves one, Pac. That isn't "many."
JMM was also not a southpaw.
And Barrera tired late?
Not against Morales or Hamed; he had enough energy to pound Hamed into the ringpost (and not trying to stall, either; he just wanted to humiliate him some more).
Pac pretty much dominated both fights, so MAB didn't really fade in them.
He also didn't fade in the McKinney classic; stopped Kennedy in the 12th.

Do you know how many southpaws there are that were forced to fight orthodox because supposedly the left hand strong hand is "evil"?

I neither know nor care. The left hand is "evil"? Silliness. If you fight as a southpaw, I'll call you one. If you don't fight as one, I won't. Pretty simple. And MAB wasn't a fader.
