Derevyanchenko lost to Mytrofanov but preserved his undefeated record thanks to corrupt judging. Medzhidov just signed with Azerbaijan.

The GB v US clash looked to have around 50 people in the audience!

Is this really the future?

Interesting scores. Two judges scored it 49-46 Derevyancenko and one 49-46 to Mitrofanov.
I havent seen the fight but these scores make no sense.

Germany 3-2 Ukraine
Britain 4-1 Italy
Astana 5-0 Usa
Poland 3-2 Russia
A couple of surprises Alexander Riscan defeated French Professional Redouane Asloum while John Joe Nevin lost to Branimir Stankovic-who normally competes as a lightweight.

Not surprisingly Maxwell lost 50-44 on all three cards but he was sporting in defeat basically saying what can you do against one of the greatest ever amateur boxers.
Ukraines first team has Lomachenko,Usyk and Gvozdik and they will take some beating.

With so many Wards and Joyces and Nevins in the amatuers I thought Joe Joyce would be a traveler and was surprised to see he is a mixed race fella. Does he have any traveler blood?

I have watched all his fights and looks to be pretty good. Does anybody have much opinion on how far he'll go? This country loves it's heavyweights and he seems to be beating everyone. Maybe he is a star in the making down the line?

I would start a thread about him in British and Irish but would worry about getting it moved.

Joyce came to peoples notice with his bouts with Frazer Clarke, epic battles. Then he beat Con Sheehan and now Hrgovic so he propels himself up the Rankings.
We will know more next month when the Ukrainians come to the York Hall when he is expected to meet Olympic Champion Olexandr Usyk.
Should be some night with Lomacenko,Evans,Selby and Gvozdik scheduled to appear.

Incidentally excellent win for Shawn Simpson beating the European Bantamweight champion Vyacheslav Gojan in a fight that was very close.
USA pro Clarence Joseph edged German Olympian Stefan Haertel as well.

I went along to the Lionhearts/Ottomans match which was very enjoyable and of a high quality.Mitrofanov was too strong for Evans-essentially a natural middleweight against a natural light-middle.Maxwell did well against Lomachencko,Ward wasnt at his best but was too good for the reserve Ukrainian.Selby won handily with plenty of showboating.
Usyk won every round but Joyce's reputation for a granite chin is well deserved and he had his moments.Joyce looks a good prospect.

Yeah, it's a great nights boxing usually, you probably saw 4/5 of the Worlds best amatures. I went the night Nevin schooled the unbeaten pro Sow and Selby defeated Conlon.
Any word on the line-up for the home quarter-final?

I think the line up against Mexico is
54 Selby
61 Nevin
73 Aston Brown
85 Ward
+91Joyce
2/5 of the British team Irish and only one Englishman
Should be good enough to beat Mexico but for Nevin a tough bout if he faces the natural lightweight Hurshid Tajibayev. Not sure why he fights at 61 rather than 54.

Mexico team for the first leg
54 Aaron Alameda
61 Fernando Diaz
73 Conrad Cummings
85 Christian Demaj
+91Milutin Stankovic
Diaz shouldnt trouble Nevin and I can only see Cummings winning for Mexico
Other Playoff quarter-finals
Baku v Ukraine
Italy v Poland
Astana v Argentina

Thanks Mike, The Lionheart's away form is pretty bad so they will need at least a 4-1.

The ABAE have banned English WSB boxers from competiting in the English ABA National Championships.I can see why they did it,keeping the tournament purely for Amateurs, but it is tough on the likes of Joe Joyce.

As anticipated British Lionhearts won 4-1 with Cummings the sole Mexican winner whilst Ukraine crushed Baku 5-0 and didnt even need Lomachenko-although Berinchuk is a useful reserve.

Nevin class, 5 kg above his weight, Cummings too impressive but not against that much. Selby as always excellent but I thought closer than the cards, Ward boxed like a world class lightweight, hand speed Ali-like, can I say more?

The second legs are this weekend and it is interesting
Lionhearts v Mexico
The lionhearts carry a 4-1 lead but they could struggle away and I can see it being very close
54 E Emigdio v S McGoldrick
61 J Romero v S Maxwell
73 M Cabrero v K Arro
85 I Munoz v B Kamara
+91 G Bisbal v U Fa
It could go to sudden death where Lawrence Osueke will face Mexican Ortega
Ukraine v Baku
Ukraine carry a 5-0 lead and should qualify easily-but the eyes of the world will be on the match between Lomachenko and the last man to beat him Albert Selimov.
Poland v Italia
Italia won 4-1 away and should ease into the semis
Argentina v Astana
Argentina lead 3-2 thanks in no small part in Pro Brian Castano's win over Derevyancenko but Astana should get through.
