Re: 1981 Ohio State Fair Open Division and Sr. J.O. Finals...
My younger brother Jim and I made the trip to Franklin County that August for the annual summer Ohio State Fair Boxing. The old wooden chairs left quite impression with the sounds of ringing bells following us on long drive home. The gloved fists smacking flesh were flying very where. I mention Todd Hickman he competed on the Columbus Fair Grounds that day so he will not be forgotten.
His daughter has posted on line asking for information about her dad so when I see chance, I do my best to recall… He was tall skinny you could count every rib in his body. He didn’t win I recall him warming up I watched him walk to the ring. I believe I saw his father and mother Bill & Roberta Hickman.
Later in Medina Ohio at The High School one night in the winter of 1983 I busy filling a bucket with ice, cutting tape, spinning gauze between a boxer finger. One of my champions was out in the hall he had met Todd immediately they built a strong friendship … the smile what a talented athlete.
I have visited many destressed street corners in my years in boxing … I will always cherish the time I spent with my brother at the 19181 Ohio State Fair the smells and sites of the fair as we parted.
