Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
Now i know beating Teon Kennedy doesn't prove much in the way of P4P standings, but it was the manner in which Rigondeaux did it, He looked like he could finish it at any point he wanted.
The Cuban has got tremendous power and speed in his left hand, it's like a homing missile. He almost looked bored in there for a while last night, as if he was saying get me someone better to face. Rigondeaux also has a mean streak about him, there's no smiles when he wins.
This guy needs a big test, someone who will make him work harder in a fight. I don't hear any boxer saying they'd fancy facing him, he's already shown what he can do when a domestic boxer tries to step up, as with Willy Casey. We have a strong Super Bantam division here, but i just couldn't see any of our guys being able to compete with Rigondeaux.
P4P No1? He's not far off

As someone who hates the idea of P4P ("What if Vitali Klitschenko was a 4'6" strawweight?" "Who gives a fornicate?"), I can only answer your question by recourse to the traditional method of ranking a fighter within his own weight class, namely by asking the only question that should matter:
"Who the fvck has this boy beaten?"
Applying this seminal criteria to Senor Rigondeaux, I find his victories over Willie Casey (arf), Rico Ramos (arf arf arf arf) & Teon Kennedy (arf arf arf arf arf arf arf -- excuse me, I may be becoming a seal) do not justify him being ranked No. 1 in his division, let alone anywhere else. The Cuban is very impressive, but he's got mad technical flaws (too long an amateur) & a tendency to switch off & bounce around the ring like a schmuck. & again, he's beaten... No-one of note.
In his own weight class, Nishioka has beaten Munroe, R. Marquez, & Jhonny Gonzalez, the former bantam & current featherweight champ. He flattened Jhonny G. with one punch. Donaire has done Montiel & Vazquez. Infinitely more impressive than the fringe guys Rigo operates against.
I saw Kazuto Ioka do a similar job to a Thai fella. The Thai fella had won umpteen world title fights (& therefore was approximately fifty times the fighter Kennedy is), but I did not rush to anoint Ioka. Ioka fights compatriot & fellow belt-holder Akira Yaegashi soon. There is talk of the winner of that one going up in weight to fight Roman Gonzalez, the Nicaraguan light-fly champ. Fights such as these show what a guy is made of, not knocking over blokes who have shown absolutely diddly fornicate-all.

Thanks for the swearing . But valid points as well. As I said he needs to step up his opposition, but when that happens I think he will beat them all.
Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
There s no one can touch him at that weight with only ten fights 8 ko s think he need to step up a weight and keep stepping up but he is not that big so wouldnt fare to well as high as super feather weight but he s great to watch

Apologies for my coarse language, if it offended; it wasn't meant that way. I swear for emphasis & comic effect, not to insult.Old bones Ian wrote:Thanks for the swearing . But valid points as well. As I said he needs to step up his opposition, but when that happens I think he will beat them all.
But seriously: isn't it a bit like the people who were saying "Bute's the number one in the division" before the Frotchety fight? A loaded division full of hard-cases with amazing bullet-proof battle-tested resumes, & we start going "Ah, but that bloke who hasn't fought anyone, he's the pick of the bunch". I for one am burned on deifying slick southpaws who have beaten no-one, at the mo'.
I'll wait until he's actually beaten someone of note, ta.
Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
I agree; he is absolute class and seems to keep himself in good nick between bouts. He is needle sharp and has very good instincts. I'd love to see him against a top name.tear up wrote:There s no one can touch him at that weight with only ten fights 8 ko s think he need to step up a weight and keep stepping up but he is not that big so wouldnt fare to well as high as super feather weight but he s great to watch
Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
Think he'll take the feather weight s as well gotta think the guy has beaten every top am in the world for years so there s no step up for him every fight a top fight who else in the super bantam weight can take on. Ext what if quigg winS hell be next in linepalooka wrote:I agree; he is absolute class and seems to keep himself in good nick between bouts. He is needle sharp and has very good instincts. The guy is brilliant
Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
Amazing speed and accuracy, with good power and ring intelligence.
However, he's shined against average opposition (like new HW savior David Price), and his best opponent gave him a tough fight. Let's see how he looks when he steps up; numerous fighters impress at one level but don't at the next.

Only downside, he's 31 already. Loked sublime last night, although against a decidedly average opponent

Rigo is the absolute business, I have been impressed with him since day 1.
Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
Been very impressed with Rigondeaux and Saturday night was somewhat of a clinic on dismantling a game but outclassed opponent.
He looks mean and determined and I reckon he'll become the man to beat in the lower weight classes.
I know Barry McGuigan likes to bang on about Frampton but I wonder if he'd fancy his fighter's chances against Rigondeaux?

As Joe Gallagher said, "I wouldnt let Scott QUigg in the same town as Rigondeaux, let alone the same ring"milpool wrote:Been very impressed with Rigondeaux and Saturday night was somewhat of a clinic on dismantling a game but outclassed opponent.

Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
That's a wicked left hand he has, looks one of the best single shots in boxing. But you can't like him over Donaire at the moment, who really is top 3 P4P, and might hit even harder than the Cuban. Plus he looks like holding a shot much better too - he's been in with some real heavy hitters, and shown no weakness, whereas Rigo was dropped and hurt by Cordoba. Donaire would probably blast him out, but a hell of a match up and love to see it made.
Rigondeaux 243-4 as an amateur, my question is......
Who in the he'll beat him ?

I myself backed the wrong slick southpaw to find out Donaire, as I've posted about in other threads. Rigondeaux proved me very wrong indeed.
Big-time kudos on the topic, Ian (& apologies again about the swearing).

Thanks mate, i must say although Guillermo Rigondeaux boxed well, i though Donaire looked out of sorts, the speed wasn't in his punches and he looked a bit soft in the body, I think his training hadn't gone well.
P.s. no idea why i got humpy about the swearing , i'm quite the swearer myself sometimes.

He will be.
Number 2 would be about right.
Will not be too long before he is No.1
Skills and speed - great fighter.

Well A LOT of people were saying Donaire was the next P4P kind, new Pac, future HOF etc and hadn't lost a fight since his 2nd fight. So is there anyone better? To get to that level after 12 fights (a baby, fighters wouldn't dream of getting a shot at Donaire until 25-30 fights) and being world champions after what, 9 fights? Who does he fight next is a good question and will he move up in weight? He's pretty small, feather or super feather fighters may be too big.
Re: Guillermo Rigondeaux is he the new P4P?
Donaire rematch could be a goer or a fight against the winner of Mares - PDL at featherweight.ShadrachSimmo wrote:Who does he fight next is a good question and will he move up in weight? He's pretty small, feather or super feather fighters may be too big.
