Jack Dempsey v Sonny Liston

Post by handsofstone »

So then, who would win?,i know everyone is automatically going to say Dempsey but there was a lot of rumours that he fought with loaded gloves, certainly against Jess Willard and i always assumed Liston never really fought much after the Muhammed Ali rematch but no he actually put up a good winning streak
I havent got the finer details on hand but im sure a lot of you fellas will :TU:
Wouldve been good to find out though ay :??

Wrong forum.

I gotta figure Dempsey's aggression and relentless attack would cause a stoppage in his favor late in the fight. Liston has all the tools to beat Dempsey physically, but I don't think he has the heart.

Yeah Boxers of the Past, even mythical fights between Modern fighters and ATG's belong there, but in this case talking about two ATG's it definitely belongs there.

I don't believe he beats Dempsey either way, but he'd certainly give him a hell of a fight for a while. Considering that Jack Dempsey's lone KO defeat was a 1st KO loss to "Fireman" Jim Flynn, it's not out of the question that Liston could catch him cold early, but once he got his motor going he'd be all over Liston all the way through. It would be Liston's skill and power vs Dempsey's power, aggression and tenacity.

A really good mythical matchup really. I favor Dempsey, but it's certainly no walk in the park for him.

There are so many rumours around Dempsey's loss to Jim Flynn being fixed (his own story was that he'd injured his right hand two days earlier from working at a bowling alley and hadn't eaten for a couple of days) that it's hard to know what to make of it in assessing Dempsey's career.

Certainly Liston's chin, jab and power make him a tough, tough matchup for Dempsey. But it was movers that troubled Dempsey rather than just power (as Figo found out), and Liston's tendency to plod might have left him vulnerable to Dempsey's own murderous punch power and ability to slip in and out of range.

Interesting I was never aware of Fixed fight allegations surrounding Dempsey's loss to Flynn

:OhYes: yep, in that situation you can even pit them against each other 10 or 20 times and see who gets the better of it more often.

Why do you assume "everyone is automatically going to say Dempsey"?

I favour Liston TBH.

I can't see Dempsey getting past Liston's tentacle like arms & ramrod jab.

Some have questioned Liston's heart & that is understandable, but he also fought with a broken jaw once, so he did have some mettle.

Liston on points, or maybe TKO late.

Interesting thread. I do feel its a shame that Liston will forever be mostly remembered for his losses to Clay/Ali near the end of his reign. His reputation and fight record prior to this was as intimidating and dominant as many other HW greats. Its a shame there's not more footage of him at his earlier wrecking ball best. :box:

Liston did seem kind of slow moving around the ring back then.
But that jab!
Every time I see this movie from the great American Drive-In Days of the 1970's,it just sort of reminds me of Liston's jab.

.....i've pretty much stopped doing these match ups so i'm not going to pick a winner, but:

that old crap about dempsey using loaded gloves should have been put to rest decades ago....and i actually thought it had been. so here's the final word......it just isn't true. period. thank you for your attention. :bag:

Notice that Ingo never got into the ring with Liston?
