He'd probably make my top 40 and last night didn't move him up. As I kept saying, Alvarez isn't a bad fighter but the un-warranted hype around him was ridiculous.

Where would you guys rank Floyd all time if he won his remaining fights against Garcia at 147, Golovkin at 156, and Kovalev at 170 to retire 48-0?

Why stop there? Lets have him beat Wlad at 199 to tie Rocks record.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
Wlad cant make 199.
The other fighters can make those weights. Maybe Kovalev would struggle, so lets say catchweight of 172.

At 170lbs is asking too much, don't you think? Why not match him with Superman or King Kong?intelguy wrote:Where would you guys rank Floyd all time if he won his remaining fights against Garcia at 147, Golovkin at 156, and Kovalev at 170 to retire 48-0?
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
Superman and King Kong are too enormous.

That's about where I'd have him. Somewhere in my Top 40 or just beyond it.dempseyfire wrote:He'd probably make my top 40 and last night didn't move him up. As I kept saying, Alvarez isn't a bad fighter but the un-warranted hype around him was ridiculous.

I think he'd be closer to my top 30, but it's hard to tell without doing it. One of these days.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
I pretty much always dislike whoever is the top name on the sport...unless he's from a third world country...and/or has a fan friendly style.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:You're one of the most objective posters I've run across, you lose that with Mayweather.
I think Floyd ranks far higher than Roy Jones....for what that's worth.
I've been following the sport for 30 years (almost)...I'm not sure he makes the top 10 (in terms of career) from those 30 years.

Floyd has more quality wins than Roy, and I'd rate him higher lb for lb, but I'll put Roy's top 2 (Hopkins, Toney) over any two wins of Floyd's. Their resumes aren't as disparate as it may seem. A lot of Floyd's better opponents from a historical standpoint, when we'll look back at them years later, such as Alvarez, Ortiz, Chavez, Hatton, old Mosley, Judah etc. aren't above the likes of Hill, Griffith, old McCallum, Sosa, Tarver etc.

Toney was a brilliant performance, even if he was weight drained. The name Hopkins looms larger than the fighter that was in front of him. He was very green. My favorite Jones performance is the first Tarver fight.dempseyfire wrote:Floyd has more quality wins than Roy, and I'd rate him higher lb for lb, but I'll put Roy's top 2 (Hopkins, Toney) over any two wins of Floyd's. Historically, Floyd will rate much higher with time(than he is now). Those names will be looked at with less emotion. For instance, 'Old' Mosley was the Welterweight champion of the world and a consensus Top 5 fighter in the world.
I'd take Floyd's performance against Marquez over any of Jones work. That is another win that will resonate greater in time. If you look at his ledger and think of someone looking at it in 50 years, Floyd probably will be overrated then.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
Saad, not saying you are wrong, but generally the hype is at its biggest when people are active. The kids watching now and growing up with Floyd will carry the torch for a couple of decades but its hard to imagine his standing improving that much.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
And with boxrec people can pick over records over and over… Very few people have bullet proof resumes these days.
For example…Mosely is a great name to have defeated… But anyone can spend 10 seconds and see that he had fought once in 2 years up to the fight with Floyd…and was some 5-6 years away from being his best. It’s still a good win. It still counts for something but its not like when my uncle would tell me that Alan Minter once beat Emile Griffith…and that’s all I knew.

It's impossible for me to imagine his standing not improving. I read people denigrating great fighters every day because they lost to Floyd. He'll be close to consensus Top 10 in a few decades when the hatred subsides.Ezzard wrote:Saad, not saying you are wrong, but generally the hype is at its biggest when people are active. For example, Marquez, great name to have defeated and anybody can watch him defeat Pacquiao twice after Floyd clowned him and see that Juan had plenty left in the tank and could handle himself quite well at 147. He gets no credit for that now, he will.Ezzard wrote:And with boxrec people can pick over records over and over… Very few people have bullet proof resumes these days.

I don't rate the Shane win that highly myself, but when people are looking back like we do on older fighters it won't look like the cherry picking, useless win people like to pretend it is. He was the champion of the world, and he won one round.

People that rate fighters.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
I rate him right up there with Leonard and Hearns.

I think he probably better than the great Thomas Hearns now. But I don't know about better than the great Sugar Ray Leonard. Leonard beat some exceptional gifted fighters. I would take the Hearns win over any victory that Pretty Boy Floyd ever had.max hord wrote:I rate him right up there with Leonard and Hearns.
And in terms of boxing ability, to me, Floyd loses to these two colossal fighters. Big time.

He hasn't climbed the Hearns wall yet.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
How can he go back in time ? He is as good as anybody from 70's boxing with what he has to fight. He's beat everybody they put in front of him. Hearns and Leonard had both lost by this time in their careers.
Re: Pretty Boy win over Canelo: What would it mean for you?
It's not really anti-Floyd in a historical sense. I don't like the guy. I want to see him lose. But I wanted to see Don Curry lose. Whittaker lose. Hopkins lose. Jones lose. Bowe lose. De La Hoya lose. That's just me.
When it comes down to it you can't anoint someone on the basis of its not their fault they don't have the competition. Because it's not Leonard and Hearns fault that they did have the competition. And signed to make the fights.
I think its enough to say Floyd is an all-timer...his record isn't the best when you put him up in the elite category...that's all...
