Did Jack Dempsey???

Post by Ezzard »

Did Jack attend Marciano's funeral?

Did he have a good relationship with Joe Louis? Or any of the other champions?

BTW, there's a street named after him in suburban Fort lauderdale.

Jack and Rocky were good friends.

"Through all the fakery, something is happening between us," Ali wrote in his autobiography. "I feel closer to him than any white fighter in the trade. We talk fighter's talk in the way only friends can, blood talk, nitty-gritty talk. Our work is phoney but out friendship has become real."

Throughout filming Ali referred to Marciano as 'champ'. And in his autobiography he wrote: "Rocky was quiet, peaceful, humble, not cocky or boastful" adding that he "deserves his place as one of the greatest of the great heavyweights. Marciano, meanwhile, called Ali "the fastest man on wheels".

"But as the fraud came near an end, it was plain that neither of us, both heavyweight champions, liked the idea of being dramatized as defeated by the other – especially in a fake fight – and we were both on edge," admitted Ali. "One afternoon I unleashed a string of lightning-fast jabs that kept coming almost the entire round. Rocky was amazed and said: "I never seen a fighter with hands that fast."

Here is Il Liberace's kryptonite. It's called a citation:

And here's Ali paying his respect at Rocky's funeral:

I believe Il Duce was referring to Dempsey, not Marciano, and making reference to Dempsey's view of the fighters mentioned.

But it is my understanding that Dempsey was not particularly close to Marciano - no more so than any other fighter.

Respectfully ,well, if I misread it the antecedent to my misreading it was Il Liberace taking a gratuitous shot at Muhammad Ali who didn't have anything to do with the topic Ezzard started.

Jack Dempsey was still a solid guy in the 1960's, and I would have liked to film a
Jack Dempsey vs. Muhammad Ali bout.

Jack said that it would be difficult to get anyone to portray him in the film, because
nobody in boxing {White Heavyweights} at the time could punch as fast and as hard
as him with his wide-swinging style.

Jack told me it was a different-style of fighting back then, with a no holds barred
free-for-all. People wanted to see knockouts, not the jab-and-move stuff which Cassius
did or used to do.

People asked Jack how would he do today, and Jack always replied honestly,
I don't know, a much different sport today.
Mike De Lisa is a boxing historian and an editor here at boxrec. Since he never was a movie director, I'd be very surprised if he ever had this conversation with Jack Dempsey.

The original question was "Did Jack attend Marciano's funeral? ... Did he have a good relationship with Joe Louis? Or any of the other champions?

You, Il Liberace, volunteered he had a bad relationship with Muhammad Ali, without attribution of course.

I had to look it up, and he did produce the DVD edition of 2005. He was not involved in any way in the original Marciano vs. Ali shooting.

If the side show is over, then maybe we can get back to the original question: Did Jack attend Marciano's funeral? I looked in my Marciano file at the clippings on his funeral and saw no mention of Dempsey attending the funeral.

Don't know about Marciano. He didn't seem to like Joe Louis. He had a good relationship with Max Baer. He gave him advice and was even in his corner. He was friendly with Gene Tunney.
