The board found that Stephen's contract hadn't been breached and was still valid, he should have been more careful when attempting to leave, especially with Warren's reputation. If he's tried to terminate his contract because of the treatment of his brother, then he is definitely stupid, he should just think for himself and make decisions on what's best for him, rather than because he isn't happy about Stephen's situation.palooka wrote:His brother couldn't just walk away from Warren and a spanner has been thrown in the works for his career; I imagine that has something to do with it.expe wrote:Is Smith stupid? Ridiculous!! Fast car is giving them a few promises and they think that they can break a contract. British boxing is away to take a big turn as these guys are breaking contracts and no doubt will not be active. causing shows to be cancelled . Paul Smith has no right to leave FW as hes been more than taken care of. All a backlash of the Swifty Smith situation and although its family thing his brother has been in the wrong which was backed by the board.

Lack of respect for those who have bought tickets to see both Smith brothers fight, only to have them pull out. In the grand scheme of things, could they not have honoured the fights on December 7th and then immediately announced their departure afterwards ?

Do feel sorry for the fans but people feeling sorry for the promoter is a joke! The man who knocked calzaghe his purse! Fighting at the highest & most dangerous level is disgusting & it the only dog move he's made

If it isn't sorted no promoter will invest in bringing big names over, as when/if they beat them they could leave next fight
All decent fights will be abroad
Barrera / Kosta z / lacy / etc

I'm actually surprised by this as Smith and FW always seemed pretty tight. British Boxing is in a bit of a mess at the moment.

Probably Warren has done all sorts that he ought to be slated for and that doesn't mean that he can be the injured party and no one notice; the Smiths seem to have been looked after by warren over the years and being the home fighter with the advantages it brings can mean fighters get to a better level and earn better money. A boxer shouldn't be able to prosper and 'milk' under a promoter, sign a contract in good faith and then fornicate it off when something better comes along.hurlock wrote:Do feel sorry for the fans but people feeling sorry for the promoter is a joke! Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
I don't know him or what has gone off.
But if I was throwing in my opinion (like everyone else on this topic) I would say that Paul seemed very close to Dean Powell and now he is longer around, perhaps he no longer has that rapport with the rest of them. I arrive at that conclusion by the fact Frank says he never even rang him.
Throw into the mix the situation with his brother and there you go. Blood is thicker than water.
With regards the "I promoted him for ten years" well that's about 2 or 3 dissolved companies in that period. I guess that he's now been passed over to Queensbury perhaps that contract is not bullet proof if he has walked.
Where would Paul fit in at matchroom ? well I guess fights with Rocky Fielding and so forth are all geographically interesting. There is the lower tier of world class which is very healthy indeed with Stieglitz , Abraham, Bika et all in there along with 2 world titles. Domestic rematches with Groves or Degale and then the wider european and world stage.
Or even opportunities down at middleweight, which is extremely strong in the UK with Barker, Murray, Andy Lee, Macklin.
Paul Smith is a useful fighter for a promoter when you think about it if utilised properly.

He is a useful fighter as he's been a pro for 10 years and never in the 'away' dressing room, always in the 'home', he's prospered and the maligned promoter has put on a fair few shows in his home town which has built his status. Lets hope he's not on the sidelines for ages (it happens) he's not a spring chicken.
Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
Let's look at what your saying:-
2011 he was fed to George Groves
2012 he fought Tommy Tolan (4-12-1)
2013 he boxed Dodson on a Matchroom show.
Hardly great is it ? and this "Home" comment, in the same space of time Rocky Fielding has boxed NINE times at the liverpool olympia alone, plus sheff, glasgow etc.
The reality is that Callum has had more fights and paydays than Stephen, Paul and Liam added together.

1) 'Fed to' George Groves? Did he have so little chance of winning?G0mez wrote:Let's look at what your saying:-

2) Who out of the brothers has earned the most do you think, boxing often but making little isn't the best way, surely?
3) what about the years 2003 - 2011 - the first 8 years, 30 bouts when he has injuries?
I'm not an outright Warren fan boy and if he seems to be wrong it'll not break my heart to say so, he isn't in the wrong every time though Gomez and Paul Smith hasn't always seemed to be the most eager/ambitious - he seemed to settle a while ago.
Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
1) Smith had a good chance in that fight because he is gutsy and always comes to win. But let's not pretend he was the "home" fighter. He was sent down to London for a start. Smith was an employee and it was obvious Groves was being groomed for bigger things, especially after he'd beaten Degale whom had beaten Smith in his previous fight (another that he was supposed to lose). Jeez did I really have to write that explanation out ?
2)Your comparing the apprentice wages of the first year of someone's career with someone perhaps in the latter stages of theirs. And still it's probably comparable. Is that really a good indicator for Paul's final and retired bank balance?
3)What about the stunning girl I used to shag senseless when I was 17 who then added 6 stone and her teeth fell out ? yeah well unfortunately I married her , but Paul seems to seeking a divorce. My point is circumstances change. And when his kids want to go Disneyland again does he sit them down as say "Kids, loyalty is more important than going to Disney ok? when you grow up you need to be an obedient slave to your corporate masters" or does he say to Eddie Hearn "Try and avoid that week for the big fight Eddie as me and the family are going out to see our villa in Florida for the first time."

Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
If you tried to get a divorce on the grounds that your wife has turned out an ugly minger then she'd take you to the cleaners.
Though Smith is a heavy handed and game fighter who packs them in from the outside I can't see what Warren has done to necessitate a 'divorce'.
After the Groves bout Smith was out for 12 months 0 he said he was moving down a weight - he got a 'soft' opponent in front of his home fans (better pay day than boxing away).
If I were Warren I'd not stand in his way and would let his learned friends see what they can do; Warren seemed to have a soft spot for Smith (who seems to be in a very tricky spot); all in though Gomez, Smith has had a good career because of Warren and not in spite of him.

Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
Fair comment, he has earned a living make no mistake and has been afforded opportunities against James Degale and George Groves and probably picked up a little wedge on both occasions.
Like I said originally, it's down to his brother I'd imagine. And with Dean no longer around to mediate then its soured and Paul is looking to move away.
It's life at the end of day. Tomorrow I'm raising money for Marie Curie and on that note, I will sign off by saying there are unfortunately people with a lot more on their plate out there.

Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
To be fair Smith doesnt deserve any special treatment. All this talk of Smith deserving a world title shot is laughable really. He lost to Degale who was having his 9th pro fight ffs! He didnt just lose either, he got dominated! He then proceeded to get knocked out in his fight with Groves who was also a novice.G0mez wrote:1) Smith had a good chance in that fight because he is gutsy and always comes to win. Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
Though to be fair to Smith both Groves and DeGale are special talents (at domestic/euro level), losing to both of those doesn't mean he's crap; DeGale will do really well I'm sure and Groves can hurt anyone he hits. In fairness Smith must be in a difficult position; his brother will be moaning, there will be all sorts behind the scenes we don't know about and Paul Smith may feel forced into making a 'statement'/action. Smith by any reasonable judgement does not 'deserve' a world title shot (when has it come to deserts?) but he's done well.columbo wrote:To be fair Smith doesnt deserve any special treatment. It all seemed so rosy with Smith analysing on BoxNati0n and now another legal wrangle on the horizon ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)
Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
Yeah, I've had some bad bosses in my day but even if I were on a good thing and had been there years I'd have just had to walk off if he'd been a dick with my brother. Bad thing for us is; he was a very good on TV, had some good insights and knew what he was doing.steve689 wrote:It all seemed so rosy with Smith analysing on BoxNati0n and now another legal wrangle on the horizon

Paul is a freind of a freind . whatever he decides or whatever happens I wish him all the best in the pursuit of a world title
Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
The only reason the Dodson fight ended up on a Matchroom show was Dodson, Warren won the purse bids, but when the show was pushed back 13 days, Dodson wouldn't have it and it was passed over to the second bidder and he actually fought a day later and unless Matchroom paid him more than they bid, lost himself money in the process.G0mez wrote:Let's look at what your saying:-

Re: paul smith out of 7th december show?
Fielding aside, I can't see any of those fights happening. Bika would need US TV onboard and I doubt they would be, Abraham and Stieglitz are taking easy fights until a potential rematch. Neither DeGale or Groves is signed with Matchroom or would be interested in a rematch and he holds nothing for Barker, Murray, Macklin and Lee.G0mez wrote:I don't know him or what has gone off.
