Anyone train at Henry Wharton's gym?

Post by Mimmy »

My lad is starting next week just had his medical today. He wants some amateur fights nothing flash I wouldn't imagine just an ex squaddie who did some training in the army but missed out on the action.

I hope so, hes 23 almost 24 so think hes missed the boat. But I hope he can get a handful of amateur fights. Cant imagine him turning pro at his age so would love to see him in with a few amateurs Also hes a golfer and maybe get some games with Henry at Fulford GC

He will be looked after. As Mrp says, Henry and Ron are good blokes, so is Tony who helps out there. Believe it or not, considering I'm a good friend of Henry and his biggest fan, I go to a different gym just round the corner because I wasn't just going to leave because H set up! How big is he? There are some good 12stone kids there for sparring.

Heworth in York? Loads of different stuff going on there, if you go on squad night there is some very good kids. He will be made welcome at Henry's. Everyone is.

And to clarify, I meant he probably had his medical done in the York ABC gym near enough to Heworth. Henry's is the other side of York. Good relationships going on with all the gyms in York. Turning into a good fight city. It wasn't too long ago you had to go to Leeds to get a good gym.

Yeh the gym is not far from where he lives in Heworth, but he didnt like something so gave Henrys a ring. I hope he gets a good start, to be hones tim living through his eyes as I could have gone pro with Johnny Rushton but didnt have the bollocks at the end of the day.

Good luck to him pal. Tell him to get to The Tramways WMC next Thursday and see every decent lad in York on. All for a tenner.

Great facilities ,good people and will be welcomed with open arms.

What I like about the young boxers Henry and Ron have is the position of their feet ,great balance meaning that they can move in and out easily.

Turning pro is about talent rather than age. These days it's not uncommon for people to turn over in their late 20s or early 30s.

Exactly, Andy. I know a kid at Henry's who is 25/26 who I would put my life on being a good pro. Just needs a bit of confidence. Got a 17 year old at our gym too who I would turn over now if I could. If your good enough, your old/young enough.

Allan Hall was a double ABA champ at 18 and John Davison (Newcastle way) did really well as a pro and didn't turn over till he was 30 though he was a real hard nut; it all depends on the individual.
