What would be the outcome of a Froch-Groves rematch?

Post by johnswan1 »

I think Groves hit the jackpot in round one, fought brilliantly after that until he began trading with Froch, but I think part of this was because he was tiring and Froch kept coming.

The fact that Froch had everything against him and still managed to come on strong towards the end and start putting a dent in Groves would lead me to believe that Froch would wear him down again in a rematch.

Usually you would expect the younger man to improve and the older man to decline further, but I'm not sure that would be the case here.

Hopefully the fight will happen, but I think Groves knows deep down he was in serious trouble and he is lucky people are on his side and not saying how brilliant Froch was to come back.

Personally not that bothered about it happening, but if it did I reckon it'd be a case of whether Froch was getting old or not. If not, I just don't see Groves staying upright for 12.

A rematch Groves wins a wide UD

thats why Froch wont rematch. When Groves boxed him Froch was pitiful, when groves elected to brawl froch was far more comfortable.

a rematch would have groves boxing at range, dance ring round froch and box his head off

Groves by brutal KO.

What the referee did for Froch last night was like getting a gold watch as a gift for your retirment. Froch was given that win as his gold watch for his service to british boxing.

Groves would knock him spark out in a rematch, no doubt about it

Groves UD by a few points.

I think Froch had every advantage in this first fight. Groves having his split mid-training with Booth, Groves being in his first big fight to make novice mistakes and wasting energy on nerves, Groves getting booed while Froch got all the cheers, Ref giving Froch license to commit foul after foul and then jumping in to stop it too early.

None of these will be the case in the rematch, if anything all the momentum and support will be with Groves. Add to that another 6 months and another punishing fight for Froch to add to his mileage. If Froch was going to batter Groves it would have been now, just can't see anything other than a bigger swing of advantages towards Groves.

Froch started appallingly. He was too relaxed and nowhere near as focused as he should have been and he got tonked good a proper. Groves looked brilliant in spells in stark comparison with Carl who was all over the shop.

There would be absolutely no danger of Froch being so lackadaisical in a rematch.

The facts are these, Groves is a front runner - a sprinter who gets out the blocks early and looks sensational when he sets off. Fast, powerful and accurate.

Meanwhile Froch has often fiddled his way into fights and often been second-best heading into the half way stage. But generally it's not a sprint, it's a marathon at world level.

If this was a 1500m race then Groves would have been 200m round the track before Froch even got his running shoes on. But by the 1,000m mark Froch was coming like a train and George, whilst admittedly a nose or two in front, he was fading badly.

He put 75% of everything into the first half and left himself with 25% for the second half.

With a full third of the fight left last night, Groves was losing his shape, holding and turning away. He might have clung on a bit longer but he was going to get his neck snapped back at some point and then it would be really bad for him.

Meanwhile Carl knew the sting had gone and he was straightening George up with little fear of what was firing back. The initial shock had faded and he had finally woken up.

This clip I found shows the final segment, and the commentators were sh*t to be honest. "He's in trouble now. His leg's have gone ! and Froch can smell blood !" and then they say 3 seconds later "That might be a controversial stoppage"

I'm as blood thirsty as the next man, and this fight deserved to come to a conclusive ending and it would have done with the consent of both men. But that's why the referee is there, so we don't get a coma job.

In closing, Groves comes away without being ironed out, he has a rematch he can earn from and has lots of people all patting him on the back for showing Froch what for. Me personally I'm glad it was a great spectacle. I'm glad we have people like Froch taking on the unbeaten youngsters, rather than vainly hang on to his 'O' fighting chumps like Mandredo (now that's a soft stoppage).

I will say this.

If Groves had have got the first round stoppage, if you think Carl is a big head / arrogant - feckin hell I'd hate to imagine how GG would have been afterwards. He'd have stuck it right up Carl and I doubt he'd have shook his hand at all.

Perhaps both parties have had a slight humbling from last night's clash? that aside it was a GREAT SCRAP 8)

I think that Groves has now had the opportunity to fight a real world class boxer and outbox him pretty easily, his confidence will be sky high. This fight could well be the making of Groves. Groves has lots of room for improvement and will do. If he and Booth have really reconciled, I'd take Groves to win by UD. He knows now he's got Froch's number.

Same result.

Froch is now on the slide and groves can only improve from that, but i would expect a better performance from Carl in a rematch, although he may be a bit cautious at the start as he would have a bit more respect for groves ability, id side with a late stoppage 9-12 in froch favour

Last night I thought Carl got out of jail and would lose a rematch, stylewise Groves' speed and ability to land booming right hands will always give him trouble and it would be difficult to come through that again. However on reflection my view has changed this morning, Froch knows Groves can hurt him and although it would still be a very tough fight the difference is he knows that this time. I firmly believe Carl would have stopped him; ultimately Groves gave everything and Froch just kept on coming. The man is a beast and I'm leaning towards him winning the rematch.

a harsh interpretation would be that froch's worst beat groves' best.

froch can improve on this performance to a greater extent than groves, and he won.

so I would expect the same in a rematch

Rubbish! Froch didnt start slow he was made to look slow and clumsy, and he was fearful of Groves power.

Froch was over after the Ward fight. He beat a bum, an overrated Bute, a shadow of the pre injury Kessler and was handed a gift last night.

I think he will retire before being beat by Groves

I watched the fight again this morning and as the fight went on, Froch changed his approach. To start with he was being brilliantly countered by Groves, especially with the right hand. Later in the fight, Froch was waiting for Groves to throw and then landing his own shots. Froch learned as he went in the fight and I think he'll do better in a rematch.

if the rematch happened i think froch would be knocked out because groves was confident in this fight so next fight he knows he can hurt him and would let his hands go and stop froch.

I agree with this.

Despite the current Groves frenzy, I would still expect a Froch win. Provided the fight was made within the next year. Carl has probably got 2 big fights left.

i think the rematch is pick 'em, if Groves can take stock and improve from this (and he should) then I'd put some money on him to outpoint Froch second time around. Froch isn't going to change he only fights one way but as much as he knows he can wear Groves down, he also knows he has to go through some serious fire to do it. You can't keep dipping into that well without it catching up with you and it seems it is already. Groves was in only his 19th fight and showed he's ready to step up. Another year of seasoning and I think he'd have beaten Froch well on points.

Aye, I think that last point is bang on. Carl would need the fight sooner rather than later.

I stated that I'd think Carl would win provided it was within the next year. I think a year or more and Groves out points him as you say.

Groves can and would fight differently. Maybe not as exciting as last nights fight, but Groves would outbox Froch and get the decision quite widely.

Froch looks great against shopworn or smaller guys. Groves has got his number.

Why not? Groves was two steps ahead of Froch all night. If he'd decided to stick to his boxing instead of engaging in a brawl he would (or should) have had the comfortable UD last night.

The facts are these, Groves has passed numerous gut checks. He was out on his feet against Anderson and came came back to get on top the guy and force a stoppage (albiet premature). He was headbutted by Degale in the 9th round of their fight, was cut, and momentarily looked troubled, he came back to dominate the 10th round and take the last round on, i think,2 judges cards and won the fight. He was buzzed by Smith at the end of the 1st round and then sparked him in the next round. He was hurt and cut against Sierra and fought back to stop the guy in a conclusive fashion. Not the actions of a front runner.

Carl and a lot, not all, of his supporters didn't think George could hurt him. They didn't think George could outbox Carl for long periods of the fight. They didn't think Georges chin would hold up under the first sustained attack attack. They thought the enormity and reality of the occasion would crack Georges belief and he would be demolished Bute-style. Well he proved them wrong on all counts, and now some of them same supporters on here are "certain" that Carl would have stopped George, even after he's proved them wrong on every other aspect of the fight??

It was just so horribly frustrating because at that point in the fight any outcome was still possible. Either guy could still have won by stoppage/points. I know Froch comes on late but feck me he took a beating for 6/7 rounds and i'm not convinced at his age he could have kept that pressure up for another 3 & half rounds despite how he's performed in the past, he was on wobbly legs walking back to his dressing room and George, being the much younger man, could have got a second wind. All speculation though, can't be certain about any of it.

Also, Froch isn't my cup of tea personality wise but i think it's grossly unfair to criticize him for anything he says on the ring apron, he'd been punched repeatedly in the head for over half an hour and must have been feeling a whole gamut of emotion. He came out with some nonsense but, for the reason mentioned, who can blame him? I do hope he is more reasoned in his assessment once the dust settles. Ultimately as a fighter, in terms of the punishment he can ship and his relentless will to win, Carl is more beast than man. 1st time i've seen him fight live and it was a joy even if he wasn't at his best/on the slide. Total respect to both fighters.

Think a rematch will be a cagier affair but George will take him on points. He'll be a bit better, more seasoned and Carl will be that bit further down the slide.

I was there last night, incredible occasion and the greatest live sporting event i've had the pleasure to attend.

I think Groves will win by KO the next time. That fight will change Froch in the ring forever.

Froch may retire, and if he does I wish him all the best. Groves will rule the division in time
