It was well commented on here that his skillset looked to be going backwards, so i cant agree that his extensive am career had helped maintain his skills.

anyways, Nevermind. just happy to see the good fights up at HW continuing.

He fought Chagaev - he is a more than "okay" opponent, and better than Huck (in 2011, at least).

Yeah I'm not too sure why Povetkin went stagnant after the Chambers fight and didn't step it up against better opposition. I thought I heard a few years ago that he had some injuries, but that was just a glimpse of a forum conversation that I happen to remember catching part of. Also with Vitali and Wlad monopolizing the top of the division, I don't think Atlas wanted to risk him too early. its a shame that with the kind of amateur career he had and the skills he was showing early on that they couldn't have done more with him and sooner. But hey, the guy stayed unbeaten for a while, had a few defenses of a plastic title, and made some money without getting too badly hurt. Sometimes the dice falls where it falls and it is what it is.

Chagaev was considered damaged goods, yeah he's a frigging standout compared to most of the names on the list he faced but he was okay at best.

either way, this is a good matchup, and one i'll definitely watch. HW has thrown up some good fights on paper as of late, and although theyve not all been great to watch its certainly making the division more entertaining.

Surprisingly good fight. Povetkin has to be the favorite based on the greater skillset, but an upset wouldn't shock me.

If Povetkin had taken more of these type of fights (Takam, Charr) in the years leading up to Wladamir he would have stood a far greater chance when they met. Instead he ruined all momentum (post chambers etc.) and stagnated massively.


Takam is a breath of fresh air, taking on anybody he can to earn a shot. Hopefully the HW division is learning its lessons of years gone by.

I dont know if it would of made much difference to be honest. I just think that from a style perspective it would of always been an uphill battle for Povetkin as he's a relatively short heavyweight in the modern era and he has short arms aswell.

I agree. He would've been more respected but I doubt he would've had 'a far greater chance' of winning.

Really? so actually fighting a good standard of opposition wont increase your chances of victory when you step up? if your not challenged and tested your skills get blunted, thats a fact.

I'm not proclaiming he would have won against Wlad, im just saying he didnt give himself anywhere near his best chance by fighting bums. Charr & Takam is a nice start on the road back, couple more wins like that and i wouldn't mind seeing a rematch with the top dog (i appreciate the first fight raped my/your/the worlds eyes) just to see the difference a solid run of fights can do for your skills.

No. Povetkin's chances of beating Wlad were about 1%. If he had taken drastic measures to prepare perfectly for the fight, his chances of beating Wlad would have been about 1.4%. Short of being given birth to by Wlad's mother, there's nothing Povetkin could have done to raise his chance of winning above 2%.

I hear that! It is a great fight - but for me, Povetkin is a strong favourite.
