I notice there's a heavyweight Liam Neeson making his debut on the bill (according to boxrec.) Anybody know of him? The recent Mickey Rourke 'fight' got me thinking. Liam Neeson (actor) boxed as an amateur, is a fan and ticks a few of the boxes so far. He's 62 - three months older than Rourke. Highly unlikely I know.

What a weigh in....Welliver is fired up and promising the Knock Out.....SBW is in serious trouble and if he were smart he'd break a leg tonight while he still has a chance to back out. Welliver is going to beat him from pillar to post and destroy him like few people ever get destroyed inside the squared circle. SBW is a kindergartener and Chauncy is a University Graduate.....easy work for Welliver and a bad mistake by team Sonny Bill. :box:

Can the fat twat not just come in at something like a decent weight? It is not like he is a puncher where he bangs people out - it is to his benefit that he comes in at something like 108kgs.

They brought him in knowing that he was going to turn up at nearly 140 kgs - looks like their tiny gamble has paid off. :witzend:

As been said, Chauncy would have knocked the crap out of Sonny Bill if he had been something like at a decent weight. Even at 115kgs would have been fine.

Chauncy has tipped the scales at 136.6 kgs, which is a tad over 301 pounds. Dunny is spotting Chauncy 30kgs in weight.

When SBW was being interviewed about this epic tomorrow night, in the background Chauncy was seen devouring a big bag of chips. Chauncy will enter the ring carrying even more tonnage by bell time.
For fck's sake, Chauncy... you can't lose 10lb for a what should be a very winnable fight??

The same thing went through my mind when I heard the weights. Chauncy is his own worst enemy.

Its a mis print from boxrec. Its actually New Zealand All black player Liam Messam making his debut, hence being on the bill with all the other rugby/league players.

All credit to SBW Sonny Bill Williams and to the Mundines for training him into a legitimate boxer with some very good skills. The uppercuts he landed were vicious and most men would have dropped like a rock when hit by those punches. From the outside he was crisp and his straight punches also had some good zip on them. Even on the inside he handled himself very well in the clinching and wrestling phase of the game. He did much better with his stamina and conservation of energy in the ring than he did against Botha. He looked much better this fight than at any other time so far in his career. He appears to be a very quick learner and he delivered about as much as anyone could have expected. There was no way he was going to drop or stop Welliver but he beat his arse just as Chauncy said he did. Hopefully he can put even more time into boxing as he has a legit future in the sport and his name value and appeal will be a great asset to boxing.

As for Chauncy.....this stretch right now is showing how tough and durable he is but he needs to lose some weight to get back to winning fights and bringing closer to his best to the ring. 300 is too heavy to get done what he needs to get done. He's lost a couple steps from when he is in the 250 range and his hand speed has dropped quite a bit as well. He is not getting inside fast enough now days and is taking way too many shots through the crab guard coming in. When he is lighter he gets in much quicker and his body attack is much more vicious after he gets inside. The extra 50 pounds right now is dragging him down big time. He can still jump in the ring with anyone in the world and compete at 300 pounds but he can't win against good fighters without going back down in weight. I didn't think SBW was going to be in the class of good fighters but he impressed me and is a good fighter. This result is a pretty clear sign that Welliver needs to get back to the basics and that starts with weight. He's got all the tools to compete and more than compete with top fighters but he needs to put them together at the same time to do it. I hope the next time he takes a big fight we will get to see a much lighter Welliver in the ring.

It was a good match for the fans though. A very entertaining scrap and a wild contrast of guys and skills in the ring. At the end of the 8th I was wanting more. And both looked like they could go an extra 2 or 4 without any problem. I don't think Williams will need to be concerned about round length anymore going forward. He learned from the Botha fight and made big strides conserving his energy and never got baited into any wild swinging episodes when Welliver kept sticking his chin out at him. He showed quite a bit of discipline and ring smarts in there. His whole game improved vastly from the fights with Clarence and Botha. Skills, game planning, and reacting in the moment were all much improved. Good luck to him going forward.

Chauncy continued his role as the human punching bag and never won a round and it was a boring tedious fight to watch.

Channel 9 appears to want to make this an annual event, with a Gallen versus SBW main event as the feature next year, yet both men will not get back into the ring soon due to their football committments, so really what good is this event to the sport. The reason it was put on this year was to solely disrupt the TV ratings of the opposition channels: Women's Tennis final and Soccer's Asian Cup Final.

It was a long night of boxing with the telecast running for almost 5 hours, just to show 5 x 4 rounders (originally called as 3 rounders by the lady TV announcer), a 6 rounder and the final 8 rounder. Full of fillers, a most unslick production with that serial pest Beau Ryan at his useless best.

you are right in everything about last night, as for Welliver he should not be allowed in the ring in his condition, and for the likes of Gallen and Williams to be getting the money and publicity they get is a joke as they are only part time fighters, and not the best , i feel for the boys that are dedicated to the game.
all the best
