PS I'm still pissed off that Gerry Cooney didn't beat that bum. He could have and should have if he had fought the way he always fought instead of trying to conserve his energy and mess around boxing in that 100 degree heat.

Cooney injured his left shoulder just before that fight. That was his left hook arm.
That was his bread and butter punch,or Suzie Q as they say. Thats also why he fought
with such unusual hesitancy and uncharacteristic timidness.

1) Did Holmes really say that Marciano was "Nothing special? Source please.

2) At the time I was rooting for Cooney too. Hell, we're both white and have lived on Long Island, why not. LOL. But after watching the Prater, Boone, Brown, Chaplin, fights and then some, I have a different view of him now. His punching power was way overestimated and his boxing skills were vastly underrated. As Victor Valle said we "Saw the real Gerry Cooney tonight." Very nice jab. Nice arsenal of punches but not overwhelming power.

3) I remember that the fight was postponed from March 15th to June because Cooney injured his RIGHT shoulder. Don't remember anything about his Left being injured. Cooney was fighting the best boxer he ever fought in Holmes. Cooney usually took his time in the ring. Watch Cooney's Leroy Boone fight.

He did stop Gregg and a very washed-up Ken Norton. He hurt them and got them out early.

Brewster, Puritty, and Sanders carried Wlad's jockstrap. Truth be told, both Wlad and Larry would have their hands filled with each other.

And let's not forget the shot Ron Lyle.

I did forget the very shot Ron Lyle. I Read some very humble Larry Holmes' quotes after the fight with Cooney. Holmes said Cooney was a very good fighter who could have beaten anyone else that night.

Homes also said that he'd fight Cooney again and would only want $100 more than Cooney.

Cooney was a pretty good fighter, he was just never developed properly so he was too easy to hit and also seemed rather fragile as well. Of course given his rather limited resume it's hard to tell how good he actually was or could have become. He was kind of like the way the HW division is now where fighters are protected as they build a resume in order to get ranked so they can cash out with a big money fight and then we never really learn how good they are because they just don't fight enough quality opponents.

Holmes said it in a very distressed situation. Rocky's brother (whom Holmes had flown in for the fight that Larry was to break Rocky's record) used the opportunity to heckle Larry at the press conference. Larry did not take this well and said a lot of things that day and God bless him. Who knows what most folks would have said in that situation.

totally agree. today's version of wlad,
despite his age, gives every ATG quite
a riddle to solve. not easy for anyone,
including the great larry holmes.
