Alphonso Bailey
Alphonso Bailey
Does anyone have any information on the Amateur record of Alphonso Bailey. He told me that he was rated #1 in the TAB Rating in the 156 pound class in either 1984 or 1985. He fought out of Louisville, Kentucky and was on the USA International Boxing team in 1984 when they fought Russia in Buffalo, New York.

Re: Alphonso Bailey
Alphonso was definitely ranked # 1 and 2 at different points back then. VERY strong guy at 156.
Re: Alphonso Bailey
I contacted Alphonso Bailey back in February of 2007. He stated that he wasn't sure if it was 1984 or 1985. He told me that he did loss to Kevin Bryant in the semi-finals of the U.S. Amateur Men's Boxing Championships in 1984, and after that he was given the #1 rating by TAB. I said, you mean after losing to Bryant, you became the #1 rated 156 pound Amateur. He said, yes, BUT he didn't know why. Bryant won that Tournament and also lost in the Semi-Finals of the USA Olympic Trials in June of 1984.ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY wrote:Alphonso was definitely ranked # 1 and 2 at different points back then. I told him that I have most the ratings for 1984, and his name wasn't their. I also asked him why he didn't box in the Olympic Trials, as all the top Amateur Boxers did. He told me that he didn't bother too because he was turning Pro shortly. He actually turned Pro over a year later in August of 1985..
I asked him about the USA International Boxing team in 1984. He said that he was on the #2 team that fought Russia in Buffalo, New York in 1984. A lot of times boxers from this country will box boxers from another country, and they don't have to be the best from each country. We have a team going to several other countries and boxing and very few are rated in the Top 10 in the USA.
Buffalo, USA
He lost to Andrey Akulov on January 29, 1985.

I also asked if he had or knew of a picture of that team, and he stated that he did not know of any.
He did know several people that were in Amateur Boxing at the time and he told me that Lenny Shaw was his manager. I told him that Shaw just passed away a couple of months ago. He said he didn't know that and he was going to call his daughter.
I really think Bailey did box as an Amateur and was pretty good.
