Vargas didn't box in the tournament that determined who went to this tournament. He did win the US Championships to qualify for the US Olympic trials but Brent Venegas is pretty good also.

its still pretty ridiculous that they wont send him now, his the only American boxer with a chance of winning a medal at the worlds

Interesting that the two USA loses were to home country Venezuela. It is a fact that if you look at any tournament around the world, the home country will always get some favorable decisions.

It will be interesting to see Brazil's medal haul next year at the Olympics. On previous trends they should win a gold at boxing.

All you have to do is look at past Olympics and world championships results and it's pretty obvious that host nation walks away with medals they may not have won somewhere else. I worry that US boxers face 3 boxers today from Venezuela. The officials are not allowed to go outside of the hotel or competition venue because of danger of kidnapping. They need a police escort to go anywhere. Maybe they will be afraid to vote against a home boxer for fear they could get hurt. Crazier things have happened in boxing.

What I was worried about came true. All 3 US boxers fighting Venezuelans got beat today. In fact Venezuela hasn't lost yet. Hmmm makes you wonder.
I do know a couple of officials at the tournament who are not from the US whose opinions I value. They will tell me the truth who they thought won.

Home nation syndrome again as the loses Cuba suffered were to host nation Venezuela. I was hopping AIBA has removed the corrupt / incompetent R/J's but I guess I was wrong. Same old same old and it pisses me off that this crap keeps happening in amateur boxing. There are many reasons for the failure of US boxers and this is a big part of the problem. When they get fecked at tournaments like this, they say why put up with this crap and head to the pros and that does not mean APB. They'll avoid that like the plaque. Just when US boxers get some international experience and get to the point where they can compete on this level, they head for the pros leaving the US to always starting over again.
I have spoken with a few people at this tournament and I was told the judging was horrible.
