Best /worst boxing venue.

Post by dinkybob »

Something maybe a little different here. I am interested to know what people's favorite and worst boxing venue has been for atmosphere and fight quality.
For my own starter for ten, my favorite venue was Wembley for the froch vs groves rematch atmosphere was incredible as was the stadium.
My least favourite was the Manchester arena for amir khan vs  Paul McCloskey, not because of the fight which was terrible but because of the horrible atmosphere.

I watched my mates debut in Linwood Sports Centre (near Glasgow) in a gym hall with chairs that looked as if they'd been nicked out the local primary school! Ricky Burns was on the bill too funnily enough! Best atmosphere I've been to was Frampton at the Odyssey Arena. Nothing has came close to that. Only 6 or 7 thousand there too but it feels like double that come the main event!

Kelvin Hall, Glasgow.

Seen Burns vs Martinez in there - what a night!

Does any of my fellow scots know whether or not boxing will be held in there again? I know the council (and some other public bodies) have ripped the place apart to put in new museums. Would be a shame if it was the end of boxing there - place has a lot of pugilistic history attached to it.

I was there myself mate. Was a great atmosphere but no bar which was a bit of a downer! I went in and left again for a few pints til Simpson v Smith. Not sure about the Kelvin Hall. Most of the smaller shows seem to be happening at Belahouston nowadays instead.

Nottingham arena was electric for forth vs bute.

Wolverhampton civic hall has always been good.

Most leisure centres or hotel dinner function rooms don't do it for me.

Also there that night when Burns beat Martinez and it was right up there among my best memories of boxing including the MGM, MEN, Millenium Stadium to name a few.

I love some of the smaller venues, Burns v Gomez in Bellahouston was top notch also.

I saw George foreman fight at London arena the atmosphere there was quite flat. Best for me was The G-Mex in Manchester, sat watching Henry Wharton fight Chris Eubank was electric.

The place was raucous then Burns got put on his arse in the first and everyone just looked at each other and froze lol. I thought Simpson was unlucky that night not to get the decision but I never watched that fight back.

Same mate, thought Simpson was unlucky but also havent watched it back. May do that over the next few days actually if i get the chance.

Always enjoyed the Kelvin Hall as a venue, was lucky enough to be given ringside tickets the night Harrison made a comeback on the undercard of Simpson v Appleby. Brutal stoppage about 2 metres infront of me and a great fight between them two that night.

I'd like to take in a fight in Leeds. Leeds are my 'English team' so a wee football during day boxing at night trip would be good if the dates ever tie in.

The Echo in Liverpool is good for views, decent size arena and not a bad view in the house. Good atmosphere with a full house too.

Similarly the O2 is good with a good crowd, although the views at the back aren't great.

I thought Wembley was shite, open air doesn't really create a great atmosphere I don't think.

York hall has to get a mention, though its a bit clichéd.

Every time I've been its been superb and no matter where you sit/stand you get a decent view, I love watching boxing there...even for the local pubs around it, Salmon & Ball, Dundee etc...brilliant venue

Think atmosphere has more to do with the fighters/fight than the venue if I'm honest. The best atmosphere's I've experienced were probably Froch/Groves 2 and Froch/Bute but in total different ways Froch/Bute was proper like a cauldron/football atmosphere (or at least how football was when it was good and not full of corporates). Froch/Groves 2 was more an overall party atmsophere (was pretty 50/50 split with Groves/Froch fans but all mixed in together) was more about the size and scale of the event for me that, was something special. On the subject of atmosphere gotta mention the 100 or so Terry Flannagan fans at the Civic Hall for the Ormond fight fairplay they were nuts!!

As for venues themselves maybe bias as its my home town but favourite definitely Wolverhampton Civic Hall its the right size to be big enough for a great atmsophere (and to get fights there that really could have gone to bigger venues) but with the balcony's has a great view from anywhere.

Also like the Tower Ballroom just for the old school feel to it, feels like your somewhere Del Boy would be going to watch cabaret.

Don't really like the bigger arena's but the smaller size arenas like the Echo and Nottingham are decent.

I've only ever been to the G-Mex (or Manchester Central as now known) for a gig (The Verve) but always wondered how they did it for boxing as its just a massive hall/hanger really isn't it. Where all the seats on the flat?

It was a similar venue in Bristol when Eubank Jnr, Haskins and Tyson fury all fought on the same bill, just a big hall really the main bit was all flat, but around the edge of one side they had some slightly raised seats. For that reason I wasn't keen on it as everyone was just stood up and you couldn't see much because it was all flat...that been said it was a fantastic night :TU:

The High stakes card from last year was good atmosphere, especially for Crolla, when he clipped Perez early and wobbled him. The outrage at the scorecards was louder than most boo's at Old Trafford come full time on a weekly basis

Kings Hall in Belfast is fairly intense,i remember Tommy Gilmour saying after Lindsay/Appleby that he'd never seen an atmosphere like it in 60 years in boxing,Paul is a tough cookie but im sure he wouldve been a bit intimadated

Good post. MEN is good for a large arena though. Froch Groves 1 was electric in parts. Can imagine those great Hatton nights were incredible.
