Few years later, about 15 years ago, he was the special guest at a boxing dinner at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose and I got to meet him as I sponsored a bout. Complete prick. Arrogant twat.
Very good fighter (lucky to face a faded legend) who was exciting and united his people. But as a person, what a tosser as all the Frampton stuff shows.

Even when I was 12 years old. I always knew that cheeky leprechaun, white dove wearing scthick was bullshit.
And I wasn't a bright child either.
'Arrrrrr Thank ye Mr Eaistwood' and then fucks him off after Steve Cruz trounced him.

Re: barry mguigan
Barry was my first boxing hero - watching him beat Pedroza (it was my grandads 65th birthday party and I couldn't wait to get away!) and his autobiography was the first book I "bought" for myself with a book token I got for Christmas.
Anyway, like a few others I now think he is a bit of a prick. I guess it started with the old "Mr Eastwood" shite when he was looking to build a profile, only to fornicate him off and put his brother in as manager when he started to get the big money (just like the likes of Naz and Hatton did).
I also agree that his fight with Pedroza was very similar to Hatton/Tszyu getting a big name at the right time - maybe he wasn't as good as I thought he was ?
Anyway, he now comes across as a right prick - and when Joe Gallagher is in the opposite corner and isn't the biggest prick in the corner that tells you something!

McGuigan had to declare himself bankrupt shortly after, and as I recall had to sell off his Lonsdale belt.Pugilist-specialist wrote:In 1992 Eastwood won in court and was awarded £450,000.Boxingcutsman wrote:He won that case and Barney had to pay him £1 million, plus all costsRexob wrote:

Great fighter
But has turned into a bit of a clown in my opinion
Eddie even says he is so hard to deal with and is not the sharpest tool in the box

Re: barry mguigan
I don't think Barry was a great fighter, he was a popular fighter and was very well marketed. His win over Pedroza was a good one and also Taylor and LaPorte but really, he had every advantage. Eastwood was a very powerful figure at one time. Barry was also a dirty fighter, hitting low and with the elbow often. I'm in the minority but I think Cruz would have beaten him in any case and Azumah Nelson cast a large shadow, Barry knew Nelson would have beaten him down.

Re: barry mguigan
I think Barry is a decent guy, yes he's arrogant, but what top level fighter isn't ?
I believe none is the answer.
Think he's not showing his best side in these times because they are probably feeling a bit put out, having to come to the other guys home town, so a bit on the defensive side, and he certainly is going to be with some of the stick his son is getting, that's understandable.
Always found the thank you Mr Eastwood stuff tiresome sure, but hey Barney the bookmaker probably did stick it up him, for all we know.
I never exactly met him formally, except in the ring just after he beat Pedroza at Loftus Road. I jumped into the ring and somehow didn't get thrown out... ended up chatting with him and he was in a pretty good mood right then
I remember unless I'm imagining it, he had his son with him there as well.

He's no longer a top fighter and hasn't been for 25 years. He has had ample time to adjust to the idea that he should treat people as he wishes to be treated, if Marvin Hagler can interact happily with fans and at the least act happy to be noticed then other fighters far less illustrious should adapt more easily.MightyWarrior wrote:I think Barry is a decent guy, yes he's arrogant, but what top level fighter isn't ?

2 different courts ruled in favour of Eastwood. It would be advisable to edit your comment.

Just don't ask for his autograph (from what I've heard from people who've been to the IBHOF induction.)palooka wrote:He's no longer a top fighter and hasn't been for 25 years. McGuigan seems to turn his charm on and off like a tap. Like many in the business I suppose. To think that he was once supposedly part of The Ring magazine's ratings panel and presumably agreed with the principals of The Ring title and yet is now happy to airbrush champ Rigondeaux out of the picture because it suits his new career.

I've got to come to his aid on that one - discombobulate ain't a "posh, clever or a big" word.....ok, it might be a bit of a big word but it absolutely describes the condition of a man in say, Price Thompson I in which Price was left "discombobulated" by a temple shot.tobyh5 wrote:My old man is Irish so I grew with him being a bit of a hero and remember as a 11 year old being above a boozer my mum worked in watching him beat Pedroza. Some of my favourite writing on boxing by James Lawton or Hugh McIllvaney you may as well forget about if you don't like words with more than a couple of syllables.
Anyone who wants to know where Barry's cash went should probably read Tornado or Whirlwind or whatever his book is called......autobiogs are normally the place for settling scores and describing how you've been shafted.

Never quite took McGuigan seriously after the way he spoke to Nicky Piper during the post fight analysis of Collins v Benn 2. I'd be neutral in tonight's fight were it not for Bazza. The bloke is a cock.

With respect, I founded and continue to own the largest regional newspaper group in my area with a circulation and advertising base far in excess of other local titles which are owned by the largest regional group in the UK so save the sarcasm and judgemental dissection of my ability to appreciate words of more than a couple syllables please.magwitch wrote: Some of my favourite writing on boxing by James Lawton or Hugh McIllvaney you may as well forget about if you don't like words with more than a couple of syllables.
I used one word as an example to be indicative of how BM uses words that are not common in spoken sentences to appear intelligent which is in line with his arrogant attitude.
Re: barry mguigan
I wasn't being sarcastic at all. If you founded....whatever it was....then you really shouldn't be knocking someone for using the word discombobulated in relation to a boxing match. Let alone somebody who's done it to such a level.tobyh5 wrote:With respect, I founded and continue to own the largest regional newspaper group in my area with a circulation and advertising base far in excess of other local titles which are owned by the largest regional group in the UK so save the sarcasm and judgemental dissection of my ability to appreciate words of more than a couple syllables please.magwitch wrote: Some of my favourite writing on boxing by James Lawton or Hugh McIllvaney you may as well forget about if you don't like words with more than a couple of syllables.

Re: barry mguigan
I agree with Toby, I can remember when McGuigan began to use those words and it wasn't to illuminate or explain with clarity, they were showing off words, he would use a long word to appear intelligent when it wasn't really needed. True intelligence can be shown casually or not on purpose, looking up some big words and using them determinedly shows insecurity.
Re: barry mguigan
My point was how it is indicative of his character. I was taught to not use words with the intention to show off my own intellect but select the ones that express what I want to in the most concise and clear way possible. Barry sounds like he has swallowed a thesaurus. I am knocking him because of his arrogance and character mate. I think you are missing my pointmagwitch wrote:I wasn't being sarcastic at all. What do you think about Chris Eubank? Do you think he should drop the "big words" and stay "in his place"? That's what it sounds like. Intelligence can take different forms.
Re: barry mguigan
A commentator or interviewee should give the impression that their comments and responses are compatible with the questions they are asked and the viewer should feel that the question has been answered as plainly and clearly as possible. If the interviewee is intelligent or has a lot of specific knowledge (not the same thing) then the viewer would be able to 'feel' that their is a deep knowledge. If someone throws around 2 dollar words without considering how they are placed it's pretty easy to discern why the words are chosen.
Re: barry mguigan
Now hang on, you are now jumping to all sorts of unsavoury conclusions or making snidey innuendos when I am pretty sure you know that is not my stance at all. I am disappointed that a poster I had a little respect for would post that.magwitch wrote: What do you think about Chris Eubank? Do you think he should drop the "big words" and stay "in his place"?
