Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
He was following instructions.
Both he & Gallagher were/are shocked to discover they were not winning the rounds when he back pedalled without throwing punches.
I have nothing against Gallagher (I don't really have any negative feelings towards anyone in boxing or life if I can help it) but if I were Quigg I'd be asking some serious questions. Gallagher might be a decent trainer but, as a strategist he is clearly lacking.
At least tell Quigg to throw a few body punches in each of the early rounds. I know they didn't want to leave themselves open to a sharp boxer like Frampton but this is boxing.

Sorry to waste it for u but quigg DID freeze in the early rounds. If quigg was smart he would've knew to take the initiative to Frampton instead of waiting for his coach to tell him what to do!
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Gallagher is the worst strategist that I've ever seen.
"Walk forward and throw shots" would have been much better advice.

Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I didn't think they had the belief. Their tactic appeared to be to stay in the fight and hope Frampton tired late on. To be fair, that almost happened, I thought Frampton looked a little wobbly at times during 10 and 11, though he was class in the 12th. I think Frampton is an excellent tactician but his days are numbered, he is clearly weak at the weight now and doesn't have the height or frame to move up the divisions, a bit like Hatton. Shame really as he is an excellent boxer. I think Quigg is stronger at the weight and realised it too late. He would win a rematch I feel whether at sb or feather. That's why it won't happen. Good luck to them both, I think they're both decent guys.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Well we'll have to disagree on this one. I see it as following orders & you see it as freezing.ThereByTheGrace wrote:Sorry to waste it for u but quigg DID freeze in the early rounds. Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Before the 12th the Boy McGuigan said "It's the last round" (or words to that effect) & Frampton said, sounding very surprised, "It's the final round???" and then came out looking like a new man.ewenhay wrote:I didn't think they had the belief. I actually thought Quigg would have a big last round but Frampton seem rejuvenated as soon as he heard there were only 3 minutes left.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
It's true, he's done this multiple times now. Watch Liam Smith v John Thompson, Anthony Crolla v Derry Mathews 2, Scott Quigg v Yoandris Salinas and now tonight.

The best fighters go with instinct and dont follow orders. Quigg was hopeless in there for a long time he should've done it himself dont blame the coachTaansend wrote:Well we'll have to disagree on this one. Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I wanted Frampton to win though I like Quigg, seems like a decent guy. I was worried in the 11th though as his legs seemed heavy and he'd lost his normal composure. I honestly thought he'd get stopped in the 12th but he showed heart and class in the last, probably his best round all night funnily enough if you don't count the easy first 6 rounds which he couldn't help but win due to Quigg's lack of activity. The better stylist will always win rounds like that on the cards.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I agree to an extent, but if they had a plan and Quigg thought it was going to plan why would he change up? He seemed surprised to find out he might be behind so that could explain it.ThereByTheGrace wrote:The best fighters go with instinct and dont follow orders. Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
If you knew Joe Gallagher you'd know that he passes on the instructions and his boxers follow them or they fall out.
Ask Joe Murray and a couple of others.
Quigg was doing as he was told. He didn't freeze. When Joe finally told him he was way behind he boxed the way he should've done from round 1.
It might have changed the result, it might not have.

His coach was giving him terrible advice again. Gallagher deserves more blame than Quigg.ThereByTheGrace wrote:The best fighters go with instinct and dont follow orders. Quigg was hopeless in there for a long time he should've done it himself dont blame the coach
Although Quigg should have ignored him and has to take his fair share of the blame.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
It's great to follow instructions but surely you know yourself that I haven't thrown a punch and the fight is half way over ,I understand he wanted to come on strong in the second half but if you lose the First 6 rounds you can only draw with out knock downs ! Wants wrong with being tight but letting lose in the last 20 seconds of a round to steal it .Frampton was very beatable tonight quigg needed to put it on him .
I think both Gallagher and quigg f@cked up more so Gallagher but surely quigg could feel in the ring it wasn't working...

Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
The change should have come after round four, they waited too long. I don't really understand how they could be surprised he was behind, all he did that was good was how well he made Frampton miss sometimes.CharlesListon wrote:If you knew Joe Gallagher you'd know that he passes on the instructions and his boxers follow them or they fall out.

Gallagher thought they were even after four. Quigg listens to Gallagher.ThereByTheGrace wrote:The best fighters go with instinct and dont follow orders. And Ray Leonard, my favourite of all time, needed help from his trainer. They offer a different perspective. They can see things that the fighter in the ring doesn't.
You say that the best fighters 'don't follow orders'. Do you consider Quigg to be one of 'the best fighters'?
On the same point, you say 'don't blame the trainer', but if the trainer is giving erroneous advice doesn't he deserve some blame? Gallagher thought they were even at the halfway point. He didn't urge Quigg to have any sense of urgency until he heard (via the Sky commentary) that they were 6-1 down after the 7th.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I'd like to see the punch stats from each round.
I'd like to see just how little both fighters landed.

Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Taansend quigg was weak and or stupid. He should've overruled Gallagher he didn't throw a punch for the first four rounds!
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I thought it was poor corner work when he said "sky had you 6 1 down after 7". It was a glaring admission that he didn't have belief in his own judgement but instead of taking responsibility that he might have called the rounds incorrectly he still hid behind the "sky said" line. Very poor.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Personally I think he's a fighter who follows his trainer. I would not say he was weak or stupid although I wouldn't argue with you that the strategy wasn't clever. Maybe if they did 3 rounds slow & then pick it up.ThereByTheGrace wrote:Taansend quigg was weak and or stupid. He should've overruled Gallagher he didn't throw a punch for the first four rounds!
But the point of this thread is that he didn't freeze early on (as the Sky commentators were suggesting). If Gallagher was telling him "Mate, you need to punch more. Get busy. Go for it" and Quigg was just prancing about like he did then we could say that Quigg froze.
But Gallagher didn't say that. He laid out a plan & Quigg went along with it. Quigg followed his trainers plan.
Quigg isn't the smartest fighter. We all knew that coming it. Frampton has that mental aspect. Quigg is a tough, fit bloke with a great heart & a decent punch.
He didn't freeze. He fought badly based on bad advice.
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I was thinking this during the bout. What did Quigg land in the first six rounds?Horse wrote:I'd like to see the punch stats from each round.

Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
The kid trusts his trainer and to be fair they've done well for Quigg in the main. I feel the whole stable fight the same way but most of them are well conditioned which suggests a good trainer but a less talented tactician. I saw Frampton had Tibbs in his corner which was a smart move to add some experience.ThereByTheGrace wrote:Taansend quigg was weak and or stupid. I agree with the comments elsewhere that maybe it's time for Quigg to look for a new start. Who do you think would be a good fit for him?
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
I don't know, mate. He is obviously someone who likes home comforts. He lives with his mum, trains nearby & really really wanted that 'home' changing room.
Saying he should go elsewhere may, or may not, make him a lesser fighter.
Maybe he'll learn from this experience (I f*cking hope so
). He did the same with Salinas - I was actually very impressed with his comeback in that fight - but he didn't get away with it now.
What's worse? Losing a points decision when you could have won if you'd tried better or losing a fight where you gave it your all and just came out 2nd best.
I hope the split decision doesn't delude Scott into thinking that he did the right thing in this fight......

Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
Hopefully it will give him a bit more belief in himself and his ability to change things during a fight. He'll get another shot no problem, he's still young and he put up a good fight (in the second half!)
Re: Quigg Didn't Freeze In The Early Rounds.....
After all the involvement of the trainers during the build up Shane McGuigan must be pissing himself now.
I agree that Gallagher saying Sky have you behind on the cards is crazy, if thats the way he is going to run his corner then anyone of us could be doing the corner in world title fights.
"Scott a guy in the 3rd row thinks you could maybe do some damage if you drop in some body shots so we can try that next"
