Browne beats Chagaev winning WBA title - our 1st ever heavyweight champ!

Post by Redback Rasta »

Our first Aussie heavyweight champ deserves his own thread for the kudos.

Get around him!

The WBA has Fres Oquendo as the mandatory title defence for Browne and after todays performance that is a winnable fight for him.

Great win. Should make him WBA's mandatory challenger for Fury, but strange things happen in boxing.

Yep, great win for Browne....getting it done on the road in dramatic style, and as the underdog.

Is he really a world champion though? Fury is the WBA champ, he beat Klitsckho.

We know that but after getting our butts kicked in big fights over the last 4 years let us celebrate. :TU:

Why not celebrate the greatest achievement by an Aussie heavyweight ever rather than try and detract from it?

I don't think it works that way for WBA "Super" and WBA "World" champions.

These WBA secondary belts were created so a unified WBA titlist would never have to vacate his WBA title due to conflicting mandatory challenges.

Though things rarely go to script, my understanding is the WBA has Fres Oquendo as the mandatory title defence for Browne.

Well done Big Daddy, who showed great ticker in coming back from the 6th round.

Shows what a lot of earlier hard work in the gym can do when the whips started cracking in the 7th round onwards.

If Browne beats Oquendo - and I think he is quite capable - he gets to fight for all the WBA marbles.

On the basis Browne was our first Commonwealth heavyweight champ for something like 120 years, and that used to be the road to the world title, I doubt we have had a top 10 heavyweight in the past 100 years.

Great news for you guys, massive congratulations.

When I was in Oz about 10 years ago, I was shocked how little coverage there was for boxing. Hopefully that's changed by now - and if it hasn't already, hopefully this result will change it!
