Felix Verdejo too slow of progression?

Post by Matematica »

Felix Verdejo is now fighting some unknown guy ranked 430. At lightweight. I'm not sure what Arum is doing with his career. I think it's because they scheduled the fight a month after the Silva fight (Silva was a good opponent). And could not find a suitable opponent for him in time. They were thinking initially Jose Felix Jr. Though Jr had sustained hand injuries in a previous fight and could not get ready in time. They later announced Franklin Mamani but Mamani apparently could not make weight in a month. So now with a few weeks left till the fight they've announced Daniel Evangelista (18-6-2, 14 KO). I suspect that Verdejo is going to just walk right through Evangelista. It will do nothing for him besides another KO on his resume. Silva was actually a good fight for Verdejo and experience builder, this is not.

Verdejo is said to fight Jose Felix Jr (33-1-1, 25 KO) June 11th on the under-card of Walters Lomachenko. That's a 50 50 fight in my opinion.

Well the problem is that they expect Verdejo to be this KO machine and in his last bout they may have matched him too evenly to shine like they'd hoped he would and now they aren't as confident in him being ready for bigger named challenges so they're going to give him a couple more tune-up fights and let him build his confidence while working on the areas they saw get exposed as his weaknesses in his last bout and then they'll move him up again with another test and should he pass that then he will be moved on to bigger and better named opponents.

I like this kid and I feel he is a great ambassador for the sport and a star in the making from PR, he will go far in this sport as long as they march him along strategically.

He's young. He's staying active. This isn't a bad fight to make. Keeps him busy probably provides a knock out to keep his confidence up and gets him some more airtime on a big undercard.
