some boxing experts critized Jerry Quarry for fighting in the heavyweight division due to his lack of size.
You know what his response was?

Very true. Maybe Keko meant those were great times or great matchups. Jerry was in the Patterson or Jimmy Ellis range which is good but not great. If he was like 12 years younger perhaps he could have become champion because he could have hung in there with Patterson (he did) or an Ingmar.

I agree too. He was a very skillful, economical counter-puncher, with
a unique style honed over many years in the amateur and professional ranks.

You can learn a lot by watching him box: the way he feints, slips punches and
goes to the body, etc.

Exactly! Better to consider Shavers' record at the time he fought Quarry, which was impressive.

Probably Quarry's best training camp ever was for Thad Spencer... He was 22 years old.. Everything worked out perfectly with no setbacks and Jerry felt so good he wasn't worried about his weight.. He knew he looked terrible versus Floyd Patterson and he was determined to not to lose to Spencer.. He came in at a rock hard 192.. He liked to be heavier but he felt so strong and solid he didn't care.. At the weigh-in Spenser weighed 205 or something I can't remember. But when Quarry was weighed Spencer was right there watching them adjust the bar. When they announced "Quarry 192" Spencer laughed and said "Jerry is too small for me." ... That's when Quarry turned to Thad and snapped those words at him.
