This is why people are concerned about PBC

Post by jujigatame »

Paying a badly faded Robert Guerrero $500K to fight a cab driver (literally) in the main event of a televised card. How is this possibly sustainable? It feels like Haymon funneling venture capital to his fighters until the wheels fall off.

I don't have any money invested in the PBC so if it sinks like the Titanic I really don't care. At this point they've blown so much of the budget on fights like that I don't even know if there's anything left to put together all the fights that people want to see.

The whole point was to build names and get sponsors to pay for the fights we want to see. That will never happen. Good try, I was behind it. It's been a complete failure because Americans don't watch Boxing on any channel at anywhere near the rate to keep up with their purses.

The concept was flawed from the start and doomed to fail. . . . very helter-skelter without a stated plan and boxers who the public could not identify with.. . . It was like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something would stick.. . . Unfortunately it was very expensive spaghetti.

In the end I'm not too upset about it. I'd really like better matchmaking, but that's true of all boxing promotion in general. It's not like it's my money that Al has been throwing around.

Ironically, ESPN's Friday night fights went off the air for PBC. FNF wasn't really superior, but its positioned itself as a notch below cable which worked for hardcore fans and average sportsfans switching through channels at night. PBC is trying to be on the level of the Showtimes and the HBOs but really doesn't have the production value.

PBC would have been better if they stayed on one network with weekly fight cards like ESPN FNF.

In the next year or two they will end up strictly on Spike and the lower ones on FS1.

Great idea from the PBC keep it up. :TU:
I think they're doing well, not every card can be a bonanza.

They have no ratings to speak of and have spent almost a billion dollars with nothing coming back.

Americans aren't familiar with Boxers. Certainly not Joshua. Joshua/Wilder wouldn't be that big here. Joshua/insert name fighter wouldn't draw much at all.

I have no idea, Wilder isn't a draw here on TV or in person. I was just giving you an example of what Joshua might look forward too. He's a captivating fighter, just letting you know that if he fought a top guy here the ratings would be abysmal at this time. It's been so long that Heavyweights have mattered here and Boxing went right with it.

I've asked you a few times to prove your loss figure, but you keep barking absurdly high sums, without bothering to justify them.

If you've simply guessed, why don't you claim ten billion dollars? ... or perhaps a trillion dollars?... or even a quadrillion dollars?

To be honest, I'm more interested about the actual PBC loss figure, regardless as to whether it's more or less than a billion dollars, but if you're simply making a derogatory unfounded guess to embellish the actual situation as a dishonest means to support your stance that the "PBC is failing"... then admit it.

Why do you believe ESPN's payscale to FNF fighters was fair?
Why do you believe HBO's, Bob Arum's and other promoter's economic logic?

500k sounds about right for the fight.
How much was the ad time going for?

Maybe ESPN, the biggest thing in all of sports,
completely under-invested in boxing.

Good question about the commercials. I can't imagine they're expensive for a bought slot. Maybe since they bought the slot the pbc gets a piece of the ads. Hard to say what the protocol is when a sport pays a network instead of the other way around. Pretty unprecedented past infomercials. That's another reason why they've lost a fortune.
