Canelo is still the Lineal MW Champion of the World? HUH? Excuse me? What did i miss?
If you were a sucker, like myself, and you ended up paying for that putrid PPV card that Golden Boy put together this weekend. You most likely heard Lampley, Max and RJJR refer to Canelo as the lineal Middleweight Champion of the World still. Michael Buffer even used the monicker when announcing Canelo inside the ring. I even read it the day after in articles by Boxing pundits rehashing the previous nights events. My only response to all of that is....WHAT? In what world is Canelo still able to use that phrase LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION? Am i in bizarro world or what?
When a boxer vacates a title instead of defending it against a mandatory, you can no longer call yourself the lineal champion of that division. AM I OUT OF LINE? This seems ridiculous to me. What's funny is that HBO goes out of their way to call Kovalev the real lineal champion after Adonis ran scared from their fight but Adonis is still holding the belt and defending it. As much as I hate Adonis, he still has legitimate claim to the lineal championship. But Canelo? Come on. HBO has stooped to some low levels before but this one is pathetic.
This is such a horrible example being set in a sport that already has issues with matchmaking. What did Canelo lose by running scared? He packed an arena with 50k plus and still holds lineal championships? Sure he's getting ridiculed but he's as popular as ever.
What am i missing here?

I agree with you that shouldn't be happening but you are out of line for buying it on ppv. There were plenty of online streams you could have used. Please do not buy a golden boy ppv again.

I'm just joking btw mate.
Re: Canelo is still the Lineal MW Champion of the World? HUH? Excuse me? What did i miss?
haha. I'm not very suave with the computer unfortunately. I'm that idiot fan that will buy whatever they shovel at me. The only one I refused to buy was Sugar Shane's last fight. That's where i drew the line. But wouldn't it be great if we could get 4 good fights on a card when paying money, like the UFC does. Some fights end up being losers but on paper, they try to put together competitive fights on the undercard. In Boxing though, promoters just use the prelim's to showcase their fighters with cupcake matchups. It's one of the many things i'd change in boxing.lazboy wrote:I agree with you that shouldn't be happening but you are out of line for buying it on ppv. outright ridiculous. ducking the lineal and
being called the lineal instead should be
too hard to swallow even for paid TV hosts.

Canelo is the lineal middleweight champion of the world. Adonis Steohenson is still also the lineal light heavyweight champion.

Adonis fights at LHW. Canelo ducked the most dangerous opponent and moved to 154.TheDarkDestroyer wrote:Canelo is the lineal middleweight champion of the world. Adonis Steohenson is still also the lineal light heavyweight champion.

He has a year before they take it away from him. If you remember, Floyd was the lineal 154 champion while only fighting there every two years.
Re: Canelo is still the Lineal MW Champion of the World? HUH? Excuse me? What did i miss?
. . . which is a good example of why lineal championships are worthless, given the structure of boxing currently. The MW lineal champion is a laughingstockTheDarkDestroyer wrote:Canelo is the lineal middleweight champion of the world.

It doesn't matter, you don't just lose the lineal title. You either lose it in the ring or retire. That's it. No one year this or move down that, it was created to avoid such nonsense. GGG will probably never be lineal champion, oh well.

GGG will start a new lineage when he gets the WBO belt.

Not as long as Canelo is fighting at or around middleweight. U less he goes up and has no intention of coming back down.boxing_rocks wrote:GGG will start a new lineage when he gets the WBO belt.

This situation is further proof that lineal titles are largely worthless these days.
The lineage was broken many moons ago & 'Conelo' shouldn't even dream of calling himself the MW champion of the world, having never fought at 160 & having ducked the best MW on the planet.

Remember when Briggs beat Foreman, it was only for the Lineal title. Lennox Lewis already held a few world title but then beat Briggs for the Lineal. People miss the fact that being a Lineal champion, is one who beats THE MAN! You can say Ring and Lineal is kinda the same, Who decided that the Lineal title was up for grabs when Postol fought Crawford? Was that because it was number 1 vs. number 2 in the division?
Technically, Stevenson beat Dawson, who was the Lineal champion, so that means he BEAT THE MAN, just because there is claims he ducked Kovalev, doesn't mean Kovalev is the Lineal champion, although The Ring Magazine have stripped Adonis of his Ring title, he still defended the WBC and Lineal title in his last fight.

Canelo's "lineage" becomes irrelevant when Golovkin is an undisputed champion.TheDarkDestroyer wrote:Not as long as Canelo is fighting at or around middleweight. U less he goes up and has no intention of coming back down.boxing_rocks wrote:GGG will start a new lineage when he gets the WBO belt.

You can't just make things up as you want. As long as Canelo is fighting around middleweight he is the lineal champion. Unless he loses it in the ring, retires or leaves the division for good he will be the lineal champion of the division. Being the lineal champion doesn't make you the best in the division, it just means you're the man who beat the man, just because you don't like it doesn't mean you can change long established criteria for how a lineal championship is won, lost or reinstated.boxing_rocks wrote:Canelo's "lineage" becomes irrelevant when Golovkin is an undisputed champion.TheDarkDestroyer wrote:Not as long as Canelo is fighting at or around middleweight. Re: Canelo is still the Lineal MW Champion of the World? HUH? Excuse me? What did i miss?
The lineal title should be treated as being of little value when the incumbent avoids the best opponents at the weight and moves down to another division once he's ordered to face a dangerous challenger. At least the big 4 ABC titles have obligations for their belt holders; the lineal title can just be sat on and even defended against 0-20 clubfighters.
Treating someone as 'true champion' just because they hold the lineal title is nonsensical in today's landscape.

I like how you put it, I agree with this. Quick question, Who was the last Light Welterweight Lineal champion before it was decided that Crawford/Postol would be for the Lineal title?TheDarkDestroyer wrote: You can't just make things up as you want. IKSRTFO & Ruthles RKO also understand how lineage works.........
The rest of you, while I do understand why you are saying what you are saying - are missing the concept of what Lineal is.
Cheers
Col/T.M.K
ps: Lineal and "The Ring" are not the same thing.
Re: Canelo is still the Lineal MW Champion of the World? HUH? Excuse me? What did i miss?
I'm not missing the concept at all.
It's nonsensical to think that someone doesn't understand lineal titles just because they question their value.

The notion of a lineal champion is made up by fans. There are no strict rules on how it starts. In most cases, an original lineal champion is the fighter considered by overwhelming majority to be the best in a division. Often, it is an undisputed champion.TheDarkDestroyer wrote:You can't just make things up as you want. As long as Canelo is fighting around middleweight he is the lineal champion. There are cases of multiple conflicting lineages. Read this: http://www.arcaneknowledge.org/sports/linealprob.htm

Explain how Adonis got that crown...a case could be made for Ward...albeit one that's convoluted...TheDarkDestroyer wrote:Canelo is the lineal middleweight champion of the world. Adonis Steohenson is still also the lineal light heavyweight champion.
