Jorge "Locomotora" Castro vs Vinny Pazienza

Post by Namilak »

Both were ranked among the official candidates for the world title 168-pound WBA and IBF in 1995, but never faced each other.
Who would have won?

Not sure, but I loved watching Vinny. Rumor was he would drink Espressos or Cappuccinos before his fights.

He claimed his loss to Jones Jr was due to losing the high from his cappuccino due to a delay in the start time of the fight.

Actually i heard that Pazienza had a bad cold and fever in the Jones Jr fight and therefore, didnt have his usual stamina and resiliance.
He DID seem to tire extra rapidly in the Jones fight. He obviously was having trouble breathing properly as bad colds and fever will do that sort of thing and sap an athlete or boxer big-time. But anyway,on the topic,I definately think its sad that they never put together Paz vs Castro. They both had a common opponent in an over the hill bloated out Duran, both went the distance with this version of Duran, twice each i might add. I really liked both Paz and Castro but somehow i feel Paz would've taken it,so long as he didnt come into the ring much less than 100%. Paz would've won a close but clear cut decision at 80-90%,and at his absolute best,he'd win a landslide decision.Too much volume and pressure. :box:

From an interview with Pazienza:

MP: In 1995, you were thrust into a very high profile match with the reigning IBF Super Middleweight Champion and the consensus pound per pound king of that period, Roy Jones, JR., Recollections?

Good puncher and as fast as lightning. He was at the top of his game. The guy was like a machine, hard to hit. Just, fast, fast, fast. I felt like shit going into it. It was for sure one of my Please God fights. I end up going into the ring at 12:30 when I thought I was going in around ten. Besides that, I had to be two-hundred percent to beat that guy. You know, I couldn’t have beat him unless I had a big punch. He was just incredible at the time. Still, I thought I could give it a shot, and maybe hurt him and get him out. It didn’t happen, especially the way the fight was. I was sleeping in the back before the fight, and I don’t sleep period. I’m not a good sleeper to begin with but for that one I was out like a light. I had been all jacked-up on cappuccino and fired-up at 10 o’clock. By the time you crash, you lose all of your electrolytes and potassium, you’re pissing out all of your fluids and I was just dead and Roy Jones, JR., was just too good for that.

Maybe he was suffering from a cold beforehand when he says he felt like shit going into it.

I'm game anytime for a Vinny Paz post as he was one of my favorites of all time. I met Paz back in the day unexpectedly at a Boys Club event in my hometown for local small time boxers. I was a huge fan at the time so when I turned to my left and saw that he was sitting in the seat next to me out of nowhere, i almost lost it. For the next two hours, I had the pleasure of being a one man audience to his play by play in each fight. I remember him predicting everything right before it would happen in the fight and i thought it was amazing how he did that. But he was so good to me that night and cool that forever i will be a fan. He was exactly who he was inside the ring and what we saw on tv. We said our goodbyes and I was heading back to the car with my Dad when someone flagged us down in parking lot. He had signed a boxing glove and gave it to one of his guys and said "make sure the italian kid I was sitting with gets this glove before he leaves". Classic night thanks to a classy guy.
