Joe Smith Promoter: Adonis Stevenson Has Run Cold, Fight a No-Go!
According to promoter Joe Deguardia a potential light heavyweight slugfest between his man, Joe Smith, and reigning WBC champion Adonis Stevenson will not be taking place in the spring.
"Adonis Stevenson has run cold. I think Adonis Stevenson decided that he doesn't want to fight Joe Smith. He doesn't want to get into the ring with a banger like Joe," the veteran promoter told BS.com on Thursday afternoon.
So what's next for the blue-collar Smith, who is union laborer from Long Island, New York?
"There's obviously other opportunities out there and people want to see him fight. I believe we have the biggest draw in New York and we'll find something for him and put him in a nice fight,'' said Deguardia of his client. who burst onto the scene last year with knockout victories over Andrzej Fonfara and Bernard Hopkins.
As for him returning to the refurbished Nassau Coliseum on April 29th, Deguardia explained - "the Nassau Coliseum fight, the thought was to make that against Adonis Stevenson. So Adonis apparently doesn't want to fight."
There has been talk of a local showdown with Seanie Monaghan.
"Well, I'm looking into other fights and there's certainly a couple guys out there that would make a good big fight with Joe and I'm looking at exploring all these options," stated Deguardia, who says he's not surprised by how things turned out with Stevenson.
"He talks a good game but when the chips are down and it's time to make a good fight, the fights not made and this is a perfect example because Joe is sitting there salivating, ready to fight whoever I tell him to fight," said a frustrated Deguardia. "But Adonis Stevenson is not coming to the table."
So what's next for Stevenson, his promoter Yvon Michel says - "The plan is to fight April 29th but we're not sure about the opponent, yet."
So why didn't this match-up come to fruition?
''Look, Adonis wants to fight him," claimed Michel. "The kid did a very good performance. Maybe the timing for everybody involved it's not there. But I'm sure we'll find a way to get Adonis and Smith in the ring together in 2017."

Re: Joe Smith Promoter: Adonis Stevenson Has Run Cold, Fight a No-Go!
Joe Smith Jr. only competed two months ago and the Christmas holidays are never a good time to negotiate fights.
Adonis Stevenson is obliged, in the short-term, to face the winner of next week’s WBC title eliminator between Eleider Alvarez and Lucian Bute.
A bout of the magnitude of Stevenson-Smith Jr. probably needs time to marinate and promote, far more than the ten weeks required for the Joe Deguardia proposed 29th April fight-date.
Joe Deguardia is probably trying to perpetrate a myth to the media by suggesting that Adonis Stevenson “ducked” Joe Smith Jr., which is as form of promotion often employed by promoters.
To be honest, Joe isn’t a top-five 175lb-er and Adonis has bigger fish to fry. Excluding Stevenson, I'd rate the likes of Beterbiev, Alvarez, Ward and Kovalev above Smith Jr.

Good points and I think team Smith want this local fight with Monaghan before moving forward.
Re: Joe Smith Promoter: Adonis Stevenson Has Run Cold, Fight a No-Go!
Smith is quick, has a good sense of distance, is really tough, and has good speed and power... He needs to bring his boxing game up with 4 or 5 more fights... You can't leave out the development work... It may be time for him to try Boxing full time... It's really the only way even a really hard worker can bring his skills up to the highest level.
Re: Joe Smith Promoter: Adonis Stevenson Has Run Cold, Fight a No-Go!
Adonis's career has become so much less interesting over the past few years
His best opponent since the end of 2013 is someone Smith KOd in 1, so even with Smith's limitations this would be a step back up for him.

I think Stevenson will eventually retire with the belt still in his clutches.
Canada I'm sure would love to see him fight Bute, but Bute (as Teddy Atlas would say) has put quite a few miles on the clock in the last two years.
If you think Adonis would face Ward et al, your dreaming.

You can say Adonis got bigger fish to fry but it's different when he's running scared from these fish.

Re: Joe Smith Promoter: Adonis Stevenson Has Run Cold, Fight a No-Go!
When Adonis Stevenson agreed to participate in a purse bid process to face his mandatory challenger, Sergey Kovalev, when the WBC tried to unify the 175lb division, which was something that Kathy Duva aggressively lobbied them to do... it was the Russian that refused the fight - not the Canadian. And he chose to do this before any of the bids were placed.TheGingerBomber wrote:Spot on I reckon.KiwiRider wrote:I think Stevenson will eventually retire with the belt still in his clutches.

I understand from your biased perspective that it's often preferable to blatantly ignore the facts if they don't adhere to your preferred perception of reality, but anyone else reading your comments needs to realise that you're either being dishonest or alternatively you are expressing criticism about a subject matter you know little about.
Please research the what happened when the WBC caved into Main Events' demands by installing Sergey Kovalev as the mandatory challenger to Adonis Stevenson's world title... and then please let me know if you are willing to revise your claims?
Please also research the fact that contractually-tied HBO fighters cannot face Showtime fighters, unless they're engaged in mega-money super-fights, such as Mayweather-Pacquiao and Lewis-Tyson.

So you're going to forgive Kovalev for refusing to fight Stevenson?TheGingerBomber wrote:Kovalev vs WardEnlightened-One wrote:When Adonis Stevenson agreed to participate in a purse bid process to face his mandatory challenger, Sergey Kovalev, when the WBC tried to unify the 175lb division, which was something that Kathy Duva aggressively lobbied them to do... it was the Russian that refused the fight - not the Canadian. Are you going to support Andre Ward's previously exclusive contract with HBO that would have prevented him from facing Stevenson?
Case truly closed, since my argument is supported with facts not meaningless catchphrases.
I expect you to avoid continuing our discussion, since you're clearly ill equipped to deal with the fact that the cold harsh truths of reality contradict your derogatory opinion.

I think you'll find son, that I presented facts. I just don't need to caress my dictionary and thesaurus to argue. I just have to tell you why I call him a chicken and that's his record compared to Kovalev's, who is superior.Enlightened-One wrote:So you're going to forgive Kovalev for refusing to fight Stevenson?TheGingerBomber wrote:Kovalev vs WardEnlightened-One wrote: When Adonis Stevenson agreed to participate in a purse bid process to face his mandatory challenger, Sergey Kovalev, when the WBC tried to unify the 175lb division, which was something that Kathy Duva aggressively lobbied them to do... it was the Russian that refused the fight - not the Canadian. It seems that you feel compelled to hold an inaccurate opinion, regardless of reality.
Good for you kid! It's your right to be determined to remain wrong at all costs in order to avoid conceding the errors of your ways!

That might be a good thing for Smith for now. Not sure though
