Gruesome pictures show extent of damage to David Haye's Achilles sustained during defeat

WARNING, GRAPHIC IMAGES: Haye suffered a serious injury during his shock defeat by Tony Bellew on Saturday night

Gruesome images have emerged that show the extent of the Achilles injury suffered by David Haye during his loss to Tony Bellew.

The 36-year-old's corner threw in the towel at the end of the 11th round after the injury he picked up in the sixth round rendered him virtually immobile.

Haye went under the knife to correct the problem and graphic photos of the operation have now come to light.

The surgery has left Haye in a cast up to his knee but, despite the lengthy lay-off ahead, he doesn't intend to call time on his career.



"I have never been more sure that I will fight again, 100 per cent. I've got no other aches and pains apart from the leg.

"[The operation] went well, they’ve done a similar operation on other athletes, long jumpers, high jumpers, basketball players, they had them and come back in their 30s.

"I'm looking forward to getting back in there."

I don't think that people realize how painful of any injury this is. Watch Dan Marino's or Carson Palmers reactions to when they tore their achilles in the pocket. Both guys went down like a shot and needed help and these are tough NFL quarterbacks.

Now i know why all the Brits love this guy. I couldn't understand it before but i do now.

Well said guys. I'm pleased that the majority of people are recognising Haye's courage - immediately after the fight I was arguing with mates about the fight. One buffoon didn't even realise Haye had an injury! Others simply didn't appreciate the extent of it.

Meanwhile, Sky's post-fight coverage seemed to try and whitewash the affair into simply a great underdog victory.

David Haye's Twitter feed shows a healthy Achilles for comparison purposes... and you don't have to possess a medical degree to understand that his leg doesn't look "right".

In terms of body parts, how can he prove that it wasn't his leg? It's because he can't! And neither can he prove that it actually is his leg!

And what would you do with such information anyway, even if he could provide categorical proof?

All that we saw was a horrible effort against Wlad in which he didn't throw enough punches to win and then blamed his toe for the loss. This after yapping heavily in the preflight buildup. So, I think Haye's handlers could have done a better job in the guys career making him more of a world attraction. He could have been a big hit here in the states I think.

I really hope that Bellew doesn't lose before these two can square off again after the injury heals because that was shaping up to be such a great fight to watch. Just bombs being thrown.

I guess he's happy being a big fish in a little pond and I'd also probably opt for that if it were me. But in an era STARVING for a heavyweight star, he really could have been that guy I think. Not that America is the all be all of places but Haye's act could have gone over very well here when he was knocking people out left and right. American's saw how brash he was in the buildup for that fight with Wlad and we all tuned in to see what this beast was about and it was such a huge letdown. Haye looked like a deer in the headlights from opening bell and never got comfortable. Imagine if he fought like he did the other night against Wlad? That would have been fun. That was a glorified pillow fight.

American's loved the Prince Nassim Hamed because he yapped and backed it up almost every single time. Loved that guy. So I just think Haye left a lot of money and fame on the table.
