Thurman vs. Peterson Could Be Ordered Soon, Says WBA Prez

In the coming weeks, World Boxing Association President Gilberto Mendoza Jr. is going to issue an order for a mandatory fight between Keith Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) and Lamont Peterson (35-3-1, 17 KOs).

The WBA is still working hard to consolidate all of their multiple titles in each weight class, so they want to eliminate the problem of having two welterweight champions as soon as possible.

Because there has been some talk of a potential rematch with Garcia, Mendoza is going give Thurman a few weeks to make a decision before ordering him to fight Peterson next.

Peterson hopes the fight can happen next. Thurman's WBC mandatory will be decided next month when Shawn Porter and Andre Berto collide in a final world title eliminator.

"There's also Keith Thurman and Lamont Peterson, which is a mandatory fight, but we know there's a possibility of a rematch with Danny Garcia, so we will give them a deadline to make a decision," said Mendoza to ESPN Deportes.

Completely on board with this fight. Good winnable fight, but a good level of competition.

The should just order it, don't want to see a rematch vs. Garcia.. and they should just get rid of the extra titles ASAP.

I like this match-up better than Thurman vs Garcia. Peterson won against Garcia as far as I could tell, and was the better boxer. Garcia's face kind of told the story after the fight. If Peterson fights the whole fight and avoids giving rounds away, he can win vs Thurman. He was caught cold vs Matthysse, and doubt that it will happen again.

Thurman should fight Brook vs Spence winner or Pac.

If he fights Peterson in the summer and then fights the Porter/Berto winner before the end of the year then it's a very good 2017 for him. However knowing PBC fighters and their tendency to only fight once or twice a year, the WBC mandatory will probably have to wait until 2018. Wins over Garcia, Peterson and Porter/Berto would probably give him a strong shout for Fighter of the Year.
