The World Boxing Council (WBC) will hand out a commemorative belt to the winner of the fight between Mexicans Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and Julio César Chávez Jr., said WBC president Mauricio Sulaimán. Three designs have been presented and it will voted on with the participation of thousands of fans around the world that will decide the winning design. It will have an elaboration period of about six weeks.

The announcement indicates that for the most outstanding fights of the traditional weekend of May 5 and September 16 will be awarded the belt called “Don Adolfo López Mateos” and the first will be for the winner of the fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., on May 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, at a catch weight of 164.5 pounds.

“The WBC is part of the celebration of these two traditional dates and has decided to award the belt to the winner, is a prize to represent our traditional date.”

The belt was designed by the Huicholes Indians.

Adolfo López Mateos was president of Mexico between 1958-1964 and was the main creator of the World Boxing Council in his foundation on February 14, 1963 seeking the unification and regulation of world boxing.

That's probably the ugliest title award of any kind I've ever seen...

I'm guessing that those flamboyant coloured belts aren't meant to be aesthetically-pleasing, since they're intended to celebrate the common Mexican heritage of the WBC, Chavez Jr. and Canelo.

So I'm going to remain politically-correct and appreciate the Mexican symbolism that the WBC's commemorative belt is supposed to represent, since I could be labelled as a bigot for mocking another country's culture.

Middle one is prolly the best but I doubt the designer will be invited to any fashion shows any time soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mauricio took a big part in that design.

THIS ONE WON!!

Of the three masterpieces on display, the exquisite green and grey version won the selection competition arranged by the WBC. The margin of victory exceeded ten thousand votes.

The artist in charge of shaping this belt with his more than a quarter of a century of experience, explained that in this mystical culture, there are constantly created enigmatic worlds with moons, suns, trees, labyrinths, spirals, mountains and cosmic oceans that appear in art, religion and customs of the Huicholes - a town that has remained free of external influence through centuries.

The belt had been created..

The World Boxing Council has revealed their special belt which will be at stake for the Mexican grudge match between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. - take place at a catch-weight fo 164.5-pounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Looks good.
Two months ago in February the World Boxing Council revealed that they would be creating a special commemorative belt for the May 6th contest between Mexican stars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, and sure enough, that’s what the WBC sanctioning body has done.

The winner of next month’s Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight will be awarded the “Don Adolfo Lopez Mateos belt after their fight. There’s no word yet whether there will be a sanctioning fee attached to the winner of this special commemorative strap. It would be interesting if the winner of this specially created belt will start defending the belt. I imagine the WBC would need to create an entirely new ranking system for the new belt.

I think that would confuse the boxing public if the new belt was added to the existing WBC, IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO titles in each division.
The addition of a special belt for the Canelo-Chavez Jr. fight isn’t really needed. It’s a fight that the boxing fans are either interested in or not. Adding a specially made up belt isn’t going to validate the Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. fight.

They are all total rubbish, as are all the ABC belts. No class at all. The Lonsdale Belt beats them all hands down.

I have to admit that it's a nice looking belt, the final design. For a catch weight fight of this magnitude, I think it's okay for the WBC to make a special belt, but it should not be acknowledged as a world championship. I guess it would be a Mexican championship.

I think it's just for the winner and wont be defended.. Much like I believe the WBA are going to give the winner of Joshua/Wlad a commemorative belt too.

I know that belt is just for Canelo vs. Chavez. I did not know the WBA was going to give a special belt for Joshua vs. Klitschko.

Sorry, I meant to say it won't be classed as a catchweight world title. Yeh, I only found out about the WBA few days ago.
