The truth hurts, go study boxing a little more, accept the loss kid, it hurt less...Kalan wrote:Bullcrap!!! ... His strategy for this fight was low blows... Good of him to apologize if he genuinely did not see the low blows. However speaking to someone about infringements is not enough if you are then too intimidated to enforce the rules. It's probably best not to referee again either. Andre Ward is certainly a complete fighter.
Wtf. Cortez was shocking in the Hatton fight. He deducted a point from Ricky for PUNCHING THE TOP ROPE.Thomastearns wrote:Good of him to apologize if he genuinely did not see the low blows. Boxing like football (soccer), is extremely difficult to referee in real time. Which is why technology is being used increasingly at the highest levels. No one enjoys a stoppage in the action but there's just too much riding on a bad decision.
Everyone remembers great players and great boxers, but what about the referees? I always liked Mills Lane who was in charge of the extremely difficult Tyson-Holyfield bout.
Joe Cortez's performance in the Hatton-Mayweather fight was a great stifling job. Very professional.
Perhaps we need a referees top 10.
The slow motion of the end of the fight showed 100 % that ward landed a clear low blow 2-3 times, with the last one being the clearest. Weeks standing close to the action didnt see nothing? Did he had his eyes closed?
Apologies for my sarcasm. Cortez's refereeing in that fight was the worst I have ever seen in a high level boxing match. Beyond incompetent, it was downright suspicious.Ricky_ wrote:Wtf. Yeah, he is a "strategist". He adjusts really well. If head butts don't work, he tries low blows. Then he would likely try elbows.imaioral wrote:The truth hurts, go study boxing a little more, accept the loss kid, it hurt less...Kalan wrote:Bullcrap!!! ... Bring the video headbutts moments and we can start talking. Say any parrot can say...boxing_rocks wrote:Yeah, he is a "strategist". He adjusts really well. Just watch the Kessler fight. Kovalev effectively neutralized any attempts of headbutts, so Ward didn't try them again.imaioral wrote:Bring the video headbutts moments and we can start talking. That was a CLEAN BIG LOWBLOW!
Right!! Weeks should have given the Russian Whiner five minutes to recover and taken a point away from SOGgy, and let us witness the completion of the comprehensive demolition SOGgy was executing on the loser.Ricky_ wrote:https://youtu.be/mzvtNCX3vP8?t=33m51s
This is a good replay of the stoppage, from 33m 51secs of this video. (Press play, it should start at 33:51).
Kovalev was hurt and trying to weather a storm from a monster right hand that Ward put all his weight behind, but he was jabbing back, his legs still steady, and actively clinching.
The finish shows Ward throw a low right (which looks like it was blocked) followed by a left hook which Kovalev slips under, then clinches.
Weeks then does a relatively weak break - putting no distance between the fighters at all.
Ward follows up with a left hook which is low. It buckles Kovalev forward somewhat, and he then drills home 2 more clear low blows.
Absolute garbage from Weeks.

I agree. If Weeks stopped low blows and other dirty tactics and Ward would still win, he would be p4p #1 at this time.Ricky_ wrote:Tanzio wrote:Right!! Had that been the case, i'd be the first to advocate Ward as p4p#1 and crediting him with the best win in the sport since JMM-Pac 4.

He couldn't have seen that in real time.Ricky_ wrote:Here's a better angle of the finish:
