Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
Golovkin is aware that he is moving toward the end of his tenure and could call it quits after fighting Canelo – but insists he does not feel his age.
“I don’t know. Maybe after this fight I’m finished, maybe not. I feel very good. OK I’m 35 but I feel like I’m 25. But this is boxing, not soccer, it’s not a game, this is a fight and every fight is very difficult,” he said earlier this week.
Golovkin turned professional in 2006 after a wildly successful amateur career, which included over 300 bouts and culminated in an Olympic silver medal.
Since then he has fought 37 times – but only 172 rounds, thanks to his thunderous power – and only went the 12 round distance for the first time ever in March against Daniel Jacobs.
In recent years he has earned millions by becoming one of the most marketable fighters on the planet and his upcoming fight with Canelo will only enhance his profile.
However, while he mentioned retirement, he is also open to the prospect of a rematch with Canelo and even having a trilogy with the flame-haired Mexican.
“I’m ready, I want. I believe it’s possible,” he said.

Now that he's finally fighting good opponents; he wants to quit.
Pathetic.

If he's having those sort of doubts about continuing it could harm his performance.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
Just sounds like he's trying to sell the fight imo.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
When a fighter starts hinting about retirement, they are already retired. I might drive to Vegas today and put everything i own on Canelo.
This love fest between GGG and Canelo is not helping sell these tickets anyway. "Dees is Boxing..Canelo great Boxer..I great Boxer..my mother is half Boxer". Ah mingia, this fight is already over. Canelo probably agreed to give his take to GGG as well if GGG takes a dive in the fight.
I miss the GGG from 2 years ago.

At least keep yourself a sleeping bag, it can get cold sleeping on the streets.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
But a lot of them have about six retirements.caldo2025 wrote:When a fighter starts hinting about retirement, they are already retired.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
Very true. I'm sure that once Canelo steals this fight from GGG with help of the judges, he'll want to retire that much more. There's no way GGG gets a clean shake in this fight.squiggy wrote:But a lot of them have about six retirements.caldo2025 wrote:When a fighter starts hinting about retirement, they are already retired.

Absolute trolling at its finest.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
3G is getting as clean of a shake as he could possibly expect. He is making more money than he could have ever imagined ten years ago. He gets 12 rounds to attempt to breakdown GingerHead. He will be more marketable after this fight, win, lose or draw, while also having enough money to retire comfortably well before his 40th birthday.caldo2025 wrote:Very true. That is about as clean of a shake as anyone could have ever expected in the history of boxing.

I think he'll fight one or two more years. He has to win though or else he may retire.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
I don't think he said something unusual for a 35-year-old boxer..sort of -time will tell- which is fair enough..

Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
It's too bad fighters like Golovkina and Lomachenko hit the mainstream so late.
Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
The reason that I love this kid is because you know he would trade all of that purse money for a win against Canelo. I'm sure he enjoys the dough he's making now but the guy just wants and has always wanted to fight the best possible fighters. Unfortunately, this fight is definitely going to the cards and even the top Boxing minds know that GGG will have to do WAY more than Canelo to win on the scorecards.Tanzio wrote:3G is getting as clean of a shake as he could possibly expect. If i see Dave Morretti as one of the judges than GGG needs a knockout to win. I'll know that early on.

Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
The way Golovkin is talking nice and friendly it would not be a shock if he agreed to throw the fight or he knows he's going to lose a decision. Something is fishy about this fight. The motive is certainly there to pay off GGG because once passed GGG Canelo is set to earn hundreds of millions.

I wouldn't say it's definitely going to the cards. Especially when you are talking of a guy who has koed 24 of his last 25 opponents.

In this interview GGG sounds like he doesn't want to win and he's almost downplaying his own chances.

Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
Everyone is talking too nice. It all sounds like it's a "business fight" - There used to be insults and smack talk when Canelo was ducking Golovkin for two years. Now they talk about each other almost like they're business partners. Something is fishy about this fight.

When have you ever seen Golovkin get smacky with an opponent?montrealsuper wrote:Everyone is talking too nice. Maybe he has, but I have yet to see it.

Canelo has never been a proper trash talker either.Impractical Poster wrote:When have you ever seen Golovkin get smacky with an opponent?montrealsuper wrote:Everyone is talking too nice. Re: Gennady Golovkin hints at retirement after Canelo Alvarez fight
GGG always highly appreciates his next opponent, even if it is somebody like Monroe Jr or Wade. He needs to sell tickets. Retirement talk serves the same purpose.
