Abel Sanchez: "Golovkin vs Jermall Charlo is bad for boxing!"

Golovkin's trainer: "Golovkin vs Jermall Charlo is bad for boxing!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpBBLBg7UH0

Whilst I’ve always admired GGG, I cannot help feeling a tad frustrated about the persistently comical nature of his trainer, Abel Sanchez. :brick:

I feel that this is one of his worst interviews he’s ever given!

I’ve quoted Abel Sanchez’s words verbatim and also supplied my own thoughts about his excuses for his very strong belief that a fight between Gennady Golovkin and Jermall Charlo is “bad for boxing!”

• “Who did Jermall [Charlo] fight to earn the reputation that he’s been given?”

Who did Gennady Golovkin fight to earn the “fearsome” reputation that he was given prior to the Matthew Macklin fight? The only recognised 160lb-er he had beaten up to that point was Grzegorz Proksa, who was rated 10th by The RING.

At least Jermall Charlo demolished Jorge Sebastian Heiland to become Gennady Golovkin's mandatory challenger for his WBC world middleweight crown.

What did a welterweight like Kell Brook do to earn the right to share the ring with a middleweight like Gennady Golovkin?

• “There’s so many different fights for Golovkin, why would he fight [Charlo] now? There’s the Jacobs rematch, first of all. There’s the Saunders fight. There’s the rematch against Canelo… This guy’s just moved up and now he’s in control?”

Didn’t Team GGG persistently labour over the fact that GGG always fulfils his obligations, which was their rebuttal about the fact that Golovkin was awarded the WBC middleweight crown?

Jermall Charlo is the mandatory challenger for Gennady Golovkin’s WBC middleweight crown. So GGG has to either fulfil his obligation to the WBC and defend his title against his mandatory challenger or vacate it like Canelo did.

• “There’s a lot of other fights that are a lot more important and a lot more significant for the middleweight division than fighting Jermall Charlo?”

Didn’t Team GGG (and his fans) criticise other fighters and basically accused them of “ducking” Golovkin when they too cited the very same reason?

• “The Charlo-Golovkin fight is not good for boxing!”

Is a bout between Jermall Charlo any worse than Golovkin’s previous bouts against unrated (i.e. not true top-ten ranked) middleweights that we saw GGG defend his word titles against, such as?

Dominic Wade
Willie Monroe Jr.
Osumanu Adama
Nobuhiro Ishida
Gabriel Rosado
Makoto Fuchigami
Lajuan Simon
Kassim Ouma
Nilson Julio Tapia
Milton Nunez

• “The real boxing fans don’t pay for the fights. The fight between Andre & Sergey only attracted 125K buys means the people didn’t want to see it that bad… It’s the fan that is attracted by this crazy fight on the 26th…”

Real boxing fans want to see the best face the best.

Using money as the sole justification to explain why Abel Sanchez doesn’t want Golovkin to share the ring with Jermall Charlo is the precisely the same justification that was previously cited by the big name 160lb-ers as their reasons for not agreeing to fight GGG, which led to them subsequently being accused of being “ducks” by Team GGG and his fans.

If Team GGG’s actions are the same as those who were accused of being “ducks”, then does that mean that Golovkin is now a “duck”?

• “The casual fans want to see a spectacle. The casual fans want to see a spectacle between two well known fighters, not the [hardcore] boxing fans… that are picky about their fighters and we know fights…”

So when the big name middleweights opted to face popular opponents that generated a lot of interest, rather than face the previously anonymous GGG, they were accused of being “ducks” by the hardcore boxing fraternity, because the previous champions weren’t facing the best. Does mean that GGG is now a “duck”?

• “Nobody knows Charlo.”

A lot of people didn’t know who Gennady Golovkin was when he arrived on the world scene in 2008, when he was ranked as a top ten middleweight by three of the sports main governing bodies.

At least Charlo is a former world champion and has also earned his mandatory position for a shot at the WBC world middleweight title.

Didn’t some of the biggest name middleweights since 2008 onwards cite the very same reason as Abel Sanchez when they expressed disinterest in taking a fight against GGG?

“We don’t have to [go into negotiations]. There aren’t going to be any negotiations. It’ll go straight to purse bids automatically. So now, who’s going to bid for Charlo? Who’s going to want to waste their money on Charlo? He has to build himself up so that he’s viable for a fight.”

Once again, Abel Sanchez is citing the same reasons that other fighters cited when they previously refused to consider fighting Gennady Golovkin. Yet they were accused of being “ducks”… so does that mean that GGG is a fellow “duck”?

Abel Sanchez’s comments for the remainder of the interview follow precisely the same theme as he continuously expresses his strong disinterest in allowing Golovkin to share the ring with Jermall Charlo.

Thoughts?

Show me and promoter, manager, trainer, boxer that doesn't talk with an air of bias?

I find you become target focussed on threads concerning golovkin in a negative manner. What you put is actually fair, I just do t see you doing this so much with other boxers in similar light

I am a long-term die-hard admirer of Gennady Golovkin’s boxing ability. I absolutely love watching him fight and he also portrays himself to the media as a very likable guy. You won’t find a single comment that I’ve posted to this forum that criticises this man on a personal level.

That being said, I sometimes object to the seemingly-obvious hypocrisy that we often witness when Team GGG and some of his blind extreme die-hard fans criticise Golovkin’s rivals, whilst defending Gennady at all cost whenever he commits the same proverbial “crime”.

For the record, I tend to create a lot of threads about a wide variety of topics and I feel that any discussions I initiate about GGG are in the small minority of my posts. My posting history will verify this.

Sometimes I will create threads of this nature about popular fighters, because it’ll attract a lot of attention, coupled with the provocative nature of the topic being discussed.

I won’t create threads that are similar in nature about anonymous fighters (or those that no one cares about, despite their accomplishments), because no one will read or reply to them.

I hope that explains my thought process adequately to you? :TU:

As soon as i heard Charlo was vacating and moving up to MW, i knew that GGG would soon have to deal with him but i never thought that it would be this early.

With that said, Charlo is a bad man. He's GGG's toughest test in the division already IMO. Sanchez is doing the right thing by minimizing the prospects of this fight right now because he's bad news for GGG. If i'm Sanchez and GGG, i'm putting off that fight as long as possible. The fight wouldn't sell very well to casual fans so it's definitely not worth the GREAT risk Charlo represents. The kid is fantastic and looks like a top P4P fighter.

With all that said, Sanchez DOES have a point here. Charlo has had 1 fight at MW and it was against a guy with one leg. Hardly deserving of a mandatory title defense at this weight. Stupid.

• Didn't Jorge Sebastian Heiland initially gain mandatory challenger status for the WBC title 2½ years ago, whilst remaining undefeated since he gained that moniker until his loss to Jermall Charlo?

• How many top-ten world-rated middleweight had Willie Monroe Jr. faced prior to fighting GGG?

• Didn't Matthew Macklin lose two of his previous three bouts prior to facing GGG?

• Wasn't Nobuhiro Ishida a former light middleweight that had failed to win ten of his bouts (at the time he fought GGG), entered the ring against Golovkin having tasted defeat in his previous two outings?

• Didn't the former light middleweight, Gabriel Rosado, lose five of his bouts prior to facing GGG, having never previously engaged in either a 160lb bout nor a world title fight?

• Didn't Lajuan Simon lose three of his previous five bouts at the time he fought Golovkin… and had even lost his previous bout immediately prior to facing GGG?

• Hadn't the former light middleweight Kassim Ouma taste defeat in five of his previous seven bouts at the time he entered the ring against Golovkin?

It's Derevyanchenko Golovkin should be worried about imo. Derevyanchenko is already set to fight Johnson, and he'll be Golovkin's mandatory soon. The IBF actually mandates their mandatory. Not sure if the WBC will do the same.

If 3G defeats GingerHead by dramatic KO, he will become possibly the biggest draw in boxing. Belts and mandatories become less consequential at that point. Team 3G will follow the money.

Charlo should get Lemieux, Jacobs or Saunders in the ring.

The more likely outcome of 3G v GingerHead is a controversial decision that leads to a rematch. If that happens, 3G may never step in the ring again v anyone but the Mexican prima dona.

Abel is stupid. Charlo didnt do enough to earn a fight against ggg. But he damn sure is a better boxer than 97 % of what ggg has faced.

Than abel talks that nonsense it would make more sense boxing saunders. Saunders is a nobody, boring ass flappy tappy boxer who nobody wants to see. Jacobs is the man, he looked very strong prime against ggg. This version of jacobs wrecks canelo, charlo, anybody except ggg under sm division!

Jacobs II
Charlo

Are the fights to be made if he wins against canelo.

Yeah Ok. Go sell that crap to someone else.

Charlo has beaten Trout and Julian Williams. Trout would be a top 3 win for GGG.

Great post.

I would say in Abel's defense he did say Jermal would want a substantial payday. A payday that wouldn't materialise if he wasn't a big name draw. Triple G is in the twilight of his career. He deserves big name fights.

Do any of us really think GGG is worried about facing Charlo, when Charlo is worried about facing Andrade?

Agreed...Charlo is better than most of the opponents GGG has ever faced. The caliber of his competition so far has been his biggest downside!! Canelo is far and away the best fighter GGG has ever faced and if he beats Canelo convincingly my respect for him will skyrocket. If GGG beats Canelo and faces Charlo that would be his second toughest opponent ever. :OhYes:

Totally misleading post. Charlo is not coming to the table when any of those previous fights did. 3G is going into a superfight that may lead to a rematch. Charlo needs to up his value. There are plenty of fighters he can do that with.

- Heiland was lame coming into the Charlo fight.

- Let's see how Monroe Jr does v BJS.

- Macklin lost a controversial decision to Sturm and to SMartinez prior to suffering the 3G beatdown.

- Ishida had lost to Pirog and PWill by decision prior to 3G.

- Rosado was on a 7 fight win streak.

You do not mention that 3G was forced to wait his turn. 3G will fight the biggest $$$ fights going forward if he gets by GingerHead.

Win or lose, a rematch with GingerHead supercedes all other options. Sanchez is just laying it out. Charlo needs a good win over a Lemieux, Jacobs, or maybe the Ndam v Murata winner.

3G is busy for awhile.

Williams has beaten no one. You've hyped him up on here but he doesnt really deserve it. Proksa had a win better than any of Williams', and, of course, that was GGG's first HBO fight; the situation is much different now.

The Trout win was good. Didnt do the one-sided job that Lara did, but Charlo did do enough to edge a suoer competitive fight.

Another GGG boogeyman/hope to beat him has arrived. Golovkin has a massive fight coming up, one that should have all his attention, and the groundwork is already being set for accusations that he's ducking someone else. I will say, at least Charlo has actually been campaigning at MW for one fight, unlike Lara (a previous boogeyman).

How would Abel Sanchez know what Jermall Charlo's payday demands were if K2 hasn't even attempted to initiate fight contract negotiations yet?

I'll give you my understanding of the answer... Abel Sanchez doesn't actually know what Charlo would like to be paid to face GGG. He's simply made an assumption... he's cited an excuse that is very likely to be factually incorrect.
