Leaked Footage: Anyone Else Impressed or Is It Just Me?
Re: Leaked Footage: Anyone Else Impressed or Is It Just Me?
IMO it showed what we already know. He has a decent left hand, he's accurate, he can punch a bit.
It also confirmed what many suspected. He has no inside game. He just slaps up close.

It's important to remember that as nice as that left hand was, he hit a tired stationary target who doesn't normally use the shoulder roll attempting to use it against a left hander.

I pretty much guarantee at several points in the fight where neither of them are particularly pressing the action, McGregor will go into all kinds of strange, deep, 'unorthodox' stances, and the commentators will wet themselves over how unpredictable he is, and how he throws shots from angles where you can't see them coming, oooooh Floyd needs to be careful here, 'is he bluffing Floyd?' 'well he certainly presents a unique set of problems for Mayweather' *gasps* etc.Chippo wrote:Is there any chance at all that Conor could be conning us all, tactics wise? His camp have been extremely open about his tactics and saying that he's going to rush Floyd, a la Maidana, including that Dana White interview. Is it possibly all a double bluff?
I don't know anything about MMA but apparently Conor prefers to counter punch so perhaps he'll surprise everyone and actually sit back, rather than going right at Floyd....?

That's precisely his game plan. Now the first time he tries a kung fu stance and a straight right floors him, all bets are off.

the "unorthodox-tricky-ooooooh what am I doing now I'm a proper wee Oirish trickster I am"-stance into knockdown sequence would delight me.
i suspect if i were to watch it, there would be a lot more of my scenario though.

Re: Leaked Footage: Anyone Else Impressed or Is It Just Me?
I think Conor will try to win enough to get stopped. I have a buddy coming in to town on the 23rd and we'll be drinking and what not until he leaves on the morning of the 26th. I think I have a good chance of missing this one. Though I could order it completely incapacitated after he leaves and before I crash. I'm actually more interested in my self control here than the fight.Counter-puncher wrote:SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Counter-puncher wrote:

Conor's best strategy might be to feint kicks.

Perfect summary!ElJefe wrote:IMO it showed what we already know. He has a decent left hand, he's accurate, he can punch a bit.

McG is on another level as his MMA opponents in terms of boxing. He usually picks them apart from the outside with RJJ-style punches. The problem is that he thinks that translates well against professional boxers. He probably pictures himself doing what RJJ did in his heyday and forgets that his MMA opponents were usually subpar boxers (with Eddie Alvarez probably being the best).
McG being a striker can't practice the inside game in MMA because he doesn't want to get entangled in grappling (which lead to his defeat against Nate Diaz in the first place). Hence, he's a fish out of water in a boxing match when it comes to the inside game. He'll probably perform worse than the early Wlad in the clinch.
Another issue will be the rule set. McG will probably have no problems remembering not to kick and grapple. I don't know though how his muscle memory will work regarding illegal punches, not necessarily elbows but slaps with the inside of the glove, hammerfists in the clinch etc.
Fighting under boxing rules against the most decorated boxer in the world will be nerve-wrecking enough, having to worry about getting pistol-whipped and made a fool like Toney against Couture, CM Punk against some MMA kid...
And one more thing:
I'm pretty damn sure that Paulie Malinaggie was instructed to be careful not to hurt McG. This will be the most lucrative boxing match of all-time and if Malinaggie had injured McG with a couple of heavy punches, he'd probably never find a job as a sparring partner again. It's much easier to look well if the opponent doesn't fight back.
Re: Leaked Footage: Anyone Else Impressed or Is It Just Me?
Interesting point. Paulie is used to sparring so he likely inherently knows to take it easy the first couple of times. Conor sparred like they were in an actual match the first time around. Maybe I'm missing something but do boxers normally spar 12 rounds the first time in training?seattledirk wrote:Perfect summary!ElJefe wrote:IMO it showed what we already know. I don't think you had to worry about Paulie hurting him. Why would Malignaggi care about future sparring? I think he just did this because he's broadcasting the event and he'll have more incite to McGregor's Boxing than anyone else in the media. Plus he was probably curious.

Ordinarily if a guy is doing 12 rounds he would have 3 or 4 sparring partners.

Floyd doesn't run, he just doesn't get hit. You don't know boxingJip wrote:I am impressed.
Conor has a very good pop in his punches and the left is powerful. Does he looked uncontrolled and open to counters would he step inside a ring against a good boxer, sure he would. Its sad that he fights floyd, cause ALL fight of floyd ate boring cause he will AGAIN RUN. He did it 100 times before and this time he ll do it again.
Conor is a good puncher who goes forward, a fight with spence, thurman, canelo or GGG would be 100 times more fun to watch. They would go at it and hurt each other and not run to a boring ud or tko fliyd because conor gasses after all the chasing etc....
Conor wins 0 rounds and gets stopped. I'm happy to bet this with you

Conor gets stopped
--> likely, but given that Floyd is no KO puncher and his last KO win is 6 years ago there is a chance that Conor might survive to a 120-108 score card. I'm pretty sure that this is exactly his game plan. He's not in there to win but to cash in 70 mio dollars, who can blame him? Floyd on the other hand is the most intelligent boxer of all-time and he's the most controlled one. He does what it takes to win and doesn't risk anything to please anyone.

I honestly think Floyd stops McGregor. He will hit him literally whenever he feels like it. And he may not be the KO puncher he once was but he could still KO most menseattledirk wrote:Floyd doesn't run, he just doesn't get hitdanconnollyeire wrote:Floyd doesn't run, he just doesn't get hit. Calling in someone fat and out of training for hard sparring sessions is pointless. If McGregor is a puncher at all, how come Malignaggi even survived for 12 rounds if McGregor was beating him? Fitness is a large part of taking a punch, and Malignaggi is coming off a stoppage loss to Eggington a weight division lower, so it's not like he's nearly impossible to stop.
16 oz gloves, and Malignaggi has never been dropped in sparring in his entire career (so he says).

In other words, he hit an out of shape, gassed, Paulie Malinaggi. Yep. I don't think I have ever seen Floyd tire. Ever. And I believe he will be in supreme shape for this bout.p4p1 wrote:It's important to remember that as nice as that left hand was, he hit a tired stationary target who doesn't normally use the shoulder roll attempting to use it against a left hander.

McGregor is getting stopped, and hopefully taking these ignorant fans with him. Talking about sparring a washed up purse punching commentator as if it means something lol.
