Scoring rules in World Boxing Super Series

Post by dagilechia »

4 score judges, 4th scorecard only matters if the other 3 judges scored it a draw, if 4th scorecard is a draw too then wins the fighter that won round 12, video verification of controversial events such as if a punch was below the belt and if a knockdown was after punch or not and so on. Your thoughts?

Stupid idea, for a limited amount of fights the chances that the outcome will be a draw seems very unlikely - i would bet the the 4th judge is never used.

Video evidence is fair enough, but not sure how it can be used mid-round - does the ref halt the contest for 5 minutes? If it's a case of a fight with a controversial end like Dirrell then fair enough- look at the tape then decide.

I don't know, maybe there will be a special judge that will watch the video record and if something unclear happened let's say in round 6, he can decide for example to deduct a point even if round 8 is going on yet so there's no need to stop the bout. Possibly, like the 4th judge, it'll be never used though.

The organizers are selling it as a package. I never thought we wouldn't get it but it starts next week.i think awe last minute is the best bet.

Usyk/Huck is not even available as a PPV in the US. Not that I'd have paid more than $20 for it with absolutely no undercard to speak of.

I think that exaggerated use of PPV is one of the main problems of boxing. I live in Poland and I pay 7-8$ per month for a TV package that provides me a channel that shows almost every good fight around the world and local events. If it's the case in the USA, boxing popularity would increase strongly i think.

One of the best things to happen in boxing in a long time and US TV isn't even carrying it. Lol! Sport is officially dead here. Maybe Earnhardt Jr will fight Mayweather next! Freakin clowns. Wonder how many idiots actually bet on Conor.

I kind of like the rules, maybe a little much, but nothing to complain about.

Yeah, it's been a long, slow kill. The pbc was the death blow.

Good point, i think ppv should reserved for the biggest fights. Sky here in the uk have rebranded their subscription channels to 'football' 'f1' etc. Seems obvious to me that there is a movement towards consumer only paying for content they want - rather than a channel which shows cricket, racing and tennis; that only represents value for fans of lots of sports. I think fight fans would happily pay a fair price for a combat sport channel that broadcasts small-medium sized cards on sub, with bigger events on ppv.

How would people have them deal with a draw? I did enjoy the 'draw breaker' extra round in Boxcino and in K1 tournaments.

yeah draw breaker round is a better solution but is it even possible now that a boxing fight can last more than 12 rounds ? Isn't it banned?

Ya, good point. It would essentially be a 13th round.

Could someone please confirm where this information has been published. I have looked at the official website for the competition and cannot find any reference to who would advance in the case of a draw on the 3 official scorecards.

OK, your reply is much appreciated, I have also heard the same thing from another source who was also quoting Kalle Sauerland.

Seems a fair enough way of deciding which fighter will progress in the case of a draw. I wonder what would happen if a belt was on the line in a fight and the fight was a draw and then the challenger got the nod from the 4th judge, would he win the belt?

Not sure what happens if one fighter misses weight?

I imagine the fight would still go ahead but the fighter who missed weight would face a financial penalty and then maybe also be unable to advance in the case that he won the fight?

Using replay is a great idea. That will take care of a large bulk of refereeing errors.

I am not sure about 4th judge. The idea of deciding by round 12 winner is I think sufficient. If 12th is drawn then 11th and so on.

all governing bodies accepted these rules so if the fighter got the nod from the 4th judge he won the belt. I don't know what happens if someone misses weight though.

In Canada its available on Super Channel. I got it recently for 10 bucks a month and its great. They have recently shown good fights: Brook-Spence, Loma-Marriaga, Crawford-Indongo. Currently they have Usyk-Huck and Smith-Skoglund scheduled from the WBSS and I believe they purchased the whole tournament package.

You need a mechanism to get rid of draws and make sure there's a decision... Cuz you have instant elimination... But you don't need 4 judges... Who ever won the 12th round of the draw wins the fight. The chance that the 12th will be called a draw by 2 judges is remote, but then you go to the 11th round.
