Bivol to Go down to 168 after Smith JR. Fight

Post by oogiebe »

ESPN: Due to promotional clashes that would hinder Bivol's ability to unify the LHW title, he's considering moving down to 168 after his fight with Joe Smith Jr. Mentioned Callum Smith as a target, as both are guided by DAZN.

I like it.

Hmmm..
I don't see Bivol as carrying excess weight. If he does move down, and can still carry power and stamina, it'd be great. Silly that promotional issues can stuff up a guy so he has to move divisions.

Who can he fight at 168 other than Callum Smith? Won't the same promotional obstacles apply to potential fights with the likes of Dirrell, Benavidez and Plant who I believe are all aligned with Haymon?

When Bivol signed with DAZN, he knew about promotional issues.

Or did he suddenly realize that the other light heavy champions were elsewhere?

He knows. It was his will to DAZN. Easier fights and dimmer lights.

Maybe when he signed, his goal was always to move down in weight for a Canelo fight.

Very interesting though! As brilliant as Canelo is, would he really fight a man that much bigger than him?

He's talking about Kovalev at 175, even if it's not likely for at least another year.

And Bivol at 168? Why not. Bivol hasn't really shown the power that makes you believe he would discourage Canelo.

And would he weaken at 168? Bivol says "no" but other fighters have said the same before dropping weight, and then were embarrassed.

True, coming down has weakened many a fighter. It certainly weakened Canelo when he fought Mayweather (remember his low output?). If Canelo can beat a top 168/175 fighter his value will go through the roof.

It’s a sorry state of affairs to see fighters being forced to abort their natural habitats so that they’re able to participate in marquee bouts against their fellow stablemates, simply because the likes of Top Rank, DAZN and the PBC often “throw parties” without inviting “persons playing for the other teams.”

Ponitless and very risky decision. He should stay at 175 and try to unify. Kovalev is a bigger fish to fry then Callum. Also it's a matter of time to see Callum moving up at 175 due of his size.

Canelos the lottery ticket. Take down Callum Smith who would also be a decent payday and popularity boost then you are ‘meant’ to be in line to face Canelo. Be careful what you wish for, you’ll have to marinate and dehydrate without Ability to hydrate - clause.

The main reason why Bivol is moving down a weight division, is because the promotional/TV network rivalries are preventing him from facing the names you’ve mentioned. It’s all detailed in the first post in this thread.

Bivol is with DAZN, whereas Oleksandr Gvozdyk, Sergey Kovalev and Artur Beterbiev are all with ESPN.

If Bivol remains at 175lbs, he won't have anyone to fight, but at 168lbs he'll be able to face fellow DAZN stablemates, like Callum Smith and Canelo.

So it’s a “very risky decision”, but it is definitely not “pointless.”

Understand this and it's a very sh.ty situation but he should try a cw or wait for Callum to move up.
