The Five Live podcast is a fcking gem, Khan tells Costello that he did not quit but he got hurt and they decided to not carry on. Uhm, that is quitting you twat.

He also says that his recollection of what the ref said was asking if he was ok, then saying he had five minutes to recover, then in the next breath he says he did not know he had five minutes and would have taken it if he knew. And Costello does not pick him up on that bullshit.

I normally enjoy this podcast (if I ignore Bunce wheezing and squeeking like a teenage girl and repeating "I am not being an aftertimer.....let's tell it as it is.....") but they dropped the ball here. Saying he did not quit and making a load of excuses. Tongues too firmly up his arse.

I always listen to their podcast, but had to switch off halfway through this one, listening to the pair of them in absolute denial.

The referees ALWAYS do so, they try and resume the action as soon as possible - there's nothing unusual in this.

The fighter is within his rights to ignore the referee, and take the full 5 minutes.

Painful maybe, but as I said, fighters have adrenalin coursing through their veins, so the effects would be minimised.

Agreed, Dirrell had no stomach at all for being hit, or the threat of being hit.

He should arguably have been DQ'd against Froch, for continually hurling himself to the floor. The referee can DQ a fighter for failing to engage with his opponent, which is effectively what he was doing.

Plus when it’s a televised show, the resting time basically equates to 5 mins of potential airtime where literally nothing is happening, which I’m sure any network would try to avoid if they can, so probably more pressure coming from the tv producers as well.
