As Boxing Scene.com reported earlier this week, Oleksandr Usyk was forced to postpone his heavyweight debut against Carlos Takam after suffering a bicep injury.
The undisputed IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO cruiserweight champion was scheduled to face Takam in Maryland on May 25.
However, fans were hit with the bad news when promoter Eddie Hearn revealed on social media that Usyk will have to wait for his heavyweight bow following a setback during training.
According to Hearn, Usyk's return could very well take place on a date in August.
He expects the boxer to resume his training duties in five weeks or so.
The good news, if any, is that Usyk will not undergo any surgery for the injury.
"He tore his biceps. He's not having an operation. I think [he's] going to [return to the ring in] August or something like that. I think it’s five weeks until he can start training again," Hearn told IFL TV.
"I don’t know how it happened or why it happened. Obviously he’s moving up and he’s doing a lot more heavy duty stuff now. He’s sparring guys that are much bigger and heavier. I don’t know whether it was lifting or sparring [when he injured himself]... probably heavy duty sparring with big guys. It’s a real shame, because I was looking forward to that."

Good thing, no operation neeed..
Bad thing, we have to wait 3 months for his HW debut.
Good thing he fought 3 times last year, hopfully he can get at least 2 fights in this year.

Hearn makes it sound like moving up to heavyweight is the reason for the injury.
That just gives ammunition to all those who claim Usyk is too small to tangle with the bigger men.

Only 5 weeks for recovery?
That's the fastest estimate I've read on a bicep tear.

They can speed up recovery by providing injections of blood platelets. They've been using that approach in Major League baseball for years. Still, it's three months, but happy to see no surgery.tiny_acres wrote: ↑09 May 2019, 08:59 Only 5 weeks for recovery?

Or doing what I said on the other thread. A bicep tear isn't necessarily a huge deal, or a "career ender", like someone said. It could hopefully be just a minor thing.

Got it. Must've been a slight tear.
