Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
Re: Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
Yarde took a slow and steady working over, he looked clueless at times, no jab, throwing and missing with lead left hooks for no reason and using Mayweathers low arm style that just made him eat jabs, the no sparring thing is crazy and bypassing British and euro championship fights left him without the necessary experience to compete, yes he had a good 8th, so what ? his team put his career and Health at risk, should’ve been pulled out at least a round earlier and there’s no guarantee that this experience hasn’t ruined him.

Re: Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
Seemed to me Yarde wasn’t bothered with winning rounds, just avoid getting whacked too often too early, bide his time, then look to land big bombs late when Kov slowed down ...
But he took plenty of head rattling shots up to the 8th..and I think he was near running on empty before pulling out those heavy body shots in 7th that had Kov visibly uncomfortable, opening up the big chance in the 8th that he nearly sensationally pulled off.
But Kov just flat out refused to lose in front of his home fans.
Amazing that such a novice with near zero experience managed to turn things around and batter the hell out of the fearsome Russian in that 8th round ....
He can be a world champ for sure

You've got to laugh at the irony from Warren saying Yarde's lack of experience was the difference, its almost as if it wasn't him whos been matching Yarde throughout his career

Yeah but when that sort of money turns up you can't turn it downhandsofstone wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 09:03 You've got to laugh at the irony from Warren saying Yarde's lack of experience was the difference, its almost as if it wasn't him whos been matching Yarde throughout his career

I agree but Team Yarde actively avoided domestic opposition to fight stiffs and work their way up the rankings, it wasnt as if this was a voluntary defence offered to them out of the blue, anyone who has the slightest idea about boxing knows you need to learn step by step before reaching world level, even more so if you've only had a dozen amateur fightsCoco wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 09:23Yeah but when that sort of money turns up you can't turn it downhandsofstone wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 09:03 You've got to laugh at the irony from Warren saying Yarde's lack of experience was the difference, its almost as if it wasn't him whos been matching Yarde throughout his career

Watching back, this finished exactly how I predicted it might. Kov obviously won cos he’s a better boxer. He stopped yarde cos he knows how to fight a 12 round fight and yarde had no idea

Indeed, you can't move through the levels without the opposition to do so; apparently Yarde doesn't even spar - he just practices technique. That showed imo, his left hook is very nice, but when the other guy is wise to it (like kov was), then what? He looked clueless in the first half and got feinted/jabbed to bits.
Re: Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
Interesting you can see that in Yarde but seem oblivious about your hero Anthony Joshua. And Yarde is technically much better than AJ.danconnollyeire wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:00 Watching back, this finished exactly how I predicted it might. Kov obviously won cos he’s a better boxer. Agreed. Warren was the one that manipulated Yarde to the #1 contender sport with his favourite organisation. Once he was the mandatory it backfired..... massively..handsofstone wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 09:03 You've got to laugh at the irony from Warren saying Yarde's lack of experience was the difference, its almost as if it wasn't him whos been matching Yarde throughout his career

Boxing is business, getting a 4 million purse is a huge success, no backfiring therekeithmoonhangover wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:03Agreed. I imagine Kov got about 40k for his fight v Clev.
A lot of top fighters won't earn 4 million in their career.

And Warinsky gets a cut of that too. No one else in his stable apart from Fury has had a $4m purse recently. He needed it.Coco wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:21Boxing is business, getting a 4 million purse is a huge success, no backfiring therekeithmoonhangover wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:03

Health is more important than wealth and Yarde's health was damaged last night. He was fed rl the Lions last night.Coco wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:21Boxing is business, getting a 4 million purse is a huge success, no backfiring therekeithmoonhangover wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:03

Maybe, but I didn't see bad after effects during this interview. Of course time will tell, but he seemed pretty up and had the fight in the right perspective.keithmoonhangover wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:45Health is more important than wealth and Yarde's health was damaged last night. He never took a beating. He got out boxed by a proven champion. He nearly had him out of there then he gassed
He proved he had a chin and heart and the second half of the fight was very entertaining
Re: Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
You mean cos he was tired an then got floored with a jab? I dont think that will affect his healthkeithmoonhangover wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 10:45Health is more important than wealth and Yarde's health was damaged last night. He was fed rl the Lions last night.

Yarde did take a beaten IMO, maybe not in the sense that Kovalev kept opening up on him and rattling his head back but make no mistake , that jab accumulation was akin to a beat down, not to mention the lead left which he landed constantly, looks like a jab more probably more like a back hand, the 1/2/1 combo as well landed throughout, that's why Yarde's chin was getting props

Tel would have carried Yarde back to the corner in the 11th!

Top post DatsDatsue wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019, 16:15 Some good points being made by keith & the lep above me—I admit I was swayed beforehand by thinking "Ooh, he's young & can punch & Kov's vulnerable, he might just do it...", but the eighth round aside he took a frightful shellacking there. Kiddie upthread who said about the Joe Gallagher-esque gameplan was spot on, too.
Astonishing naivety to go in there without a real plan ("Just go out there & get your head jabbed off for eight rounds, Ant, he'll get tired then") & then after he'd shot his bolt, to let him keep getting pasted until he was drilled into the floor was fvcking execrable.
Nothing wrong with Yarde's heart or his chin, but Tunde is a pudendum & sold him short.
PS: I have never been quite sold on Kovalev. However, he came through a tough, tough fight versus a much younger bloke & came right back from the brink to do it. I've often thought you can't call a fella great until he goes right to the brink & comes back. & there you go.

Re: Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
Kovalev has definitely shown the character that some have doubted, in rebounding to outbox Alvarez & then come through very rough moments to stop Yarde.
So, was Yarde’s showing the bravest light heavyweight challenge since Finnegan’s attempt against Bob Foster?

Andries v Hearns was suicidally brave, albeit a defence rather than a challenge
Re: Round-by-Round: Sergey Kovalev vs. Anthony Yarde - 24 August 2019
In terms of pure guts, Andries turning the table on Harding in their second fight ranks highly. He was beaten up, totally exhausted yet found something and pummelled & clobbered his man, nailing almost to the canvas. That was staggering stuff.

Agree, and just the last 3 were enough to call it a beating, he took a pounding there and fell to a jab because he had nothing left at all. Could've been pulled out the round before too. It wasn't like a beating where he was just battered from start to finish, but it ended in gruelling fashion for him. Exhausted, swollen, taking shot after shot (almost 100 in the last 3), then flat on his back.handsofstone wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019, 12:30 Yarde did take a beaten IMO, maybe not in the sense that Kovalev kept opening up on him and rattling his head back but make no mistake , that jab accumulation was akin to a beat down, not to mention the lead left which he landed constantly, looks like a jab more probably more like a back hand, the 1/2/1 combo as well landed throughout, that's why Yarde's chin was getting props
