David Oliver Joyce vs. Lee Haskins - 1 February 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Davey Oliver Joyce may already have had a fringe bauble to his name but he will be looking to add another when he returns to the ring in the first quarter of the new year.

The former WBO European featherweight champion, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the MTK Global ‘Golden Contract’ tournament in London back in November, will be back between the ropes on February 1.

Joyce was stopped by Commonwealth featherweight champion Leigh Wood at Bethnal Green’s famous York Hall venue, exclusively live on Sky Sports and ESPN +, as he suffered his first defeat in the paid code.

And the man from Mullingar (11-1, 8 KOs) will look to bounce back when he takes on Lee Haskins at Ulster Hall in Belfast, exclusively live on iFL TV worldwide.

The vacant WBO European title down at super-bantamweight will be at stake in Northern Ireland when Joyce faces the former IBF world bantamweight champion, from Bristol, who has a record of 36-4 with 14 quick.

“This fight will bring me back to where I belong and I’m working hard in the gym every day,” said Joyce. “I’ve made weight so easily at featherweight and now I’m moving down to super-bantamweight after making a few changes.

“I’ve watched Haskins fight Ryan Burnett and a few other ones he’s had. He’s not bad. He’s a southpaw as well and we have some of those in the gym who fight like that so I’m prepared for him.

“I’ve boxed his style all my life as an amateur so I know what to expect. Tyrone McCullagh will be sparring me in camp and it’s great to have him and Tyrone McKenna in camp for this one. We’ll all help each other.”

It was recently confirmed that both McCullagh and McKenna, who are in the featherweight and super-lightweight Golden Contract tournaments, have joined Joyce in teaming up with Pete Taylor.

The pair left Danny Vaughan after their quarter-final wins in the tournament and their first assignments under their new tutor will be revealed in due course.

Joyce, meanwhile, has boxed in Belfast before –– but he has yet to box at the Ulster Hall.

“Ulster Hall is just one of those ‘mega’ boxing venues,” he said. “It’s great to have my chance to get back to winning ways take place there.”

Super-lightweight talent Sean McComb meets Argentina’s Mauro Maximiliano Godoy in what is another step up in levels on the card, having beaten Godoy’s countryman Emiliano Dominguez Rodriguez at the same venue back in October, while there is action also slated for Steven Donnelly and Pierce O’Leary.

O’Leary must first get through a fight on December 20 at the Bolton Whites Hotel and if he is successful he will be joined on the card by the likes of Taylor McGoldrick, Gary Cully, Padraig McCrory, Dee Sullivan, Callum Bradley and Ruairi Dalton.

Haskins should still have enough left in the tank to take this by late stoppage/points...

I expect Haskins to win this one fairly handily. Not sure what Joyce means when he says he has spent his life boxing people with Haskins’ style. There aren’t many around with his style...

I wouldn't be too confident in Lee given he's 37 and looked totally dog sh!t the last time he faced a live opponent. Obviously Burnett is much better than Joyce, but Lee's at the stage where these types can defo beat him

I dont really rate joyce and when my brother was scheduled to fight him was possibly most confident I have ever been in a fight being made. Hes very small so going to the weight can either go two ways but I think it may be negative as he isnt young himself. Fan friendly fighter though and wish both lads well,

Hes had a bit of a nightmare with his back so he broke neck and was back in training for a bit. Was sparring better than I ever seen him then he damaged his back so he had an operation on his back just before the new year. Hes rehabilitating that at moment but hopes to fight again possibly in summer. Who knows though all depends if he can get threw a camp. Hes got to route of problem now so time will tell.

Haskins will cause the big man some problems early on with his speed and movement, but sooner or later Joyce's 1' 2" height and 130 weight advantage will tell.

Lee Haskins Sees Defensive Flaws in David Oliver Joyce

Former world champion Lee Haskins has identified the one key area which he feels will make the difference when he takes on David Oliver Joyce in less than two weeks’ time.

Ex-IBF bantamweight champion Haskins (36-4, 14 KOs) faces Joyce (11-1, 8 KOs) for the WBO European super-bantamweight title at the Ulster Hall in Belfast on February 1 – live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank and worldwide on IFL TV.

Highly-rated Joyce is looking to bounce back following his #GoldenContract quarter-final with Leigh Wood in October, but Haskins feels that bout may have revealed a weakness about the Irishman.

Haskins said: “I’m very excited about the fight and it is another chance for me to win another title. As I’m getting older I want to see what else I can do to add to my legacy. Training has been going really good and I’m in a happy place and enjoying it again.

“After the two years out I think I needed a good break to get the hunger back. I hear David Oliver Joyce likes to come on strong and he walks on to a lot of shots, so I believe that could work in my favour.

“He got stopped in his last fight and I think he would have learnt from his stoppage, as if he’s going to continue in the professional ranks he’s definitely going to need to learn from mistakes.

“I believe my skill over the years and my knowledge really could help me in this fight, but take all that away I still believe it’s going to be a hard fight so that’s why I’ve pushed myself.”

Elsewhere on the card, a fascinating battle sees Sean McComb face Mauro Maximiliano Godoy, Gary Cully takes on Joe Fitzpatrick for the BUI Irish lightweight title, unbeaten Lewis Crocker collides with John Thain, plus many more superb bouts.

It’s the first #MTKFightNight of 2020 at Belfast’s Ulster Hall on Saturday and if you’ve missed any of the build-up, you can catch up right here.

After a ground-breaking couple of years that has seen Carl Frampton fight at Windsor Park and Michael Conlan at Féile an Phobail, the famous fighting city of Belfast is set for an even bigger 2020.

Kicking that campaign off is a mouth-watering card at one of Belfast’s most iconic venues that has hosted some fantastic #MTKFightNight entertainment already.

This bill features title fights, several true 50-50s and some of the brightest talent on the island, so here’s a rundown of what to expect on the night.

Sean McComb vs. Mauro Maximiliano Godoy

As a former national team amateur captain, McComb was a popular man in his home city of Belfast even before he began a truly remarkable race up the levels as a professional.

‘The Public Nuisance’ – so called due to a now infamous incident at the Commonwealth Games – has already tackled a world title challenger in his last fight, when he showed incredible heart and skills to recover and outclass Emiliano Dominguez Rodriguez at this very venue.

Now, the 9-0, 4 KOs prospect steps up again against talented Argentinian Godoy (32-5-1, 17 KOs), who has fought in Canada, Spain and Kazakhstan in the past 18 months and arrives looking to upset the applecart.

This is a high-class headline act that can confirm McComb as a truly elite prospect.

Gary Cully vs. Joe Fitzpatrick
Irish lightweight title

What a fight for Irish boxing this is. Two unbeaten lightweights – hotly tipped as two of the biggest talents on the island – colliding early in their careers for a title.

The towering Cully (9-0, 4 KOs) makes the journey from Naas with noisy fans in tow. A Peter Taylor-trained skillster, ‘The Diva’ will be looking to secure his first title as a professional on a massive stage having breezed back from last year’s hand injury.

Standing in his way is local hope Fitzpatrick (10-0, 7 KOs). A hard-hitting southpaw, ‘The Dragon’ is only fractionally shorter than Cully and having already blasted to the BUI Celtic crown by stoppage at the end of last year, is hopeful of adding another belt to his collection.

This is an intriguing clash of young, ambitious fighters who don’t know what it’s like to lose. Nobody can confidently say who will prove himself the best in Ireland on the night.

Davey Oliver Joyce vs. Lee Haskins
WBO European super-bantamweight title

Style clashes often throw up the best battles and in Joyce (11-1, 8 KOs) and former world champion Haskins (36-4, 14 KOs), this bill has a potential cracker on its hands.

Having been edged out of the #GoldenContract tournament in his sole career defeat, it’s no surprise to see Mullingar’s Olympic hero Joyce step down in weight. A powerful puncher, he may look to overwhelm Haskins with pressure and become a two-weight WBO European king.

Former IBF world champion Haskins is not the easiest to catch up with, of course. The Bristolian southpaw – aka ‘The Playboy’ – held the EBU European crown before his slick skills saw him claim world honours. It took Joyce’s former MTK Global team-mate Ryan Burnett to dethrone him.

This one could be a real game of cat and mouse.

Lewis Crocker vs. John Thain

Belfast has a huge-hitting welterweight to get behind in Lewis Crocker and visitor John Thain is certain to provide the local with his toughest test to date.

Crocker (10-0, 6 KOs) has been widely tipped by the likes of Carl Frampton as a star of the future and at the age of 23, he has plenty of time to fine-tune technique to supplement his devastating natural power.

While ‘The Croc’ may enter this one a favourite, Thain has fought at the higher level having contested British and IBF European crowns and the popular Scot will be hell-bent on breathing new life into his career.

It’s another hugely significant test for another vaunted Belfast prospect and could provide real fireworks.

Undercard

A busy undercard stars some of the best talent the island has to offer.

Olympian Steven Donnelly attempts to follow up on hs Ultimate Boxxer glory when he goes up against the ambitious Jordan Grannum.

Hot Dublin prospect Pierce O’Leary tackles Liam Richards; the ever popular Padraig McCrory is in against the experienced former soldier Lewis van Poetsch; Omagh’s talented Callum Bradley faces Mikey Horabin; burly local Dee Sullivan looks to take a step forward against Jiri Svacina; Keady’s Seanie Duffy battles Jamie Quinn; and Belfast’s Ruairi Dalton matches up with Rafael Castillo.

Yep looking forward to this too, first televised Saturday evening card in the British Isles this year, depends how much Haskins has left at his age and he'll most likely be the smaller man, going with a Joyce decision.

Final Presser Quotes

This weekend sees a huge #MTKFightNight return to Belfast, with four superb 50-50 fights taking place inside the incredible Ulster Hall.

The massive sold out event takes place on Saturday – live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank and worldwide on IFL TV.

Sean McComb faces Mauro Maximiliano Godoy, David Oliver Joyce fights former world champion Lee Haskins for the WBO European super-bantamweight title, Gary Cully takes on Joe Fitzpatrick for the BUI Irish lightweight title, plus Lewis Crocker collides with John Thain.

The fighters met during the final press conference on Thursday, and here’s what they all had to say…

McComb said: “I’m trying to get to the top as quick as I can. Godoy has a great record, he has more knockouts than I have fights, so I’m aware of the step up but I’m aware of my ability.

“I’ve taken some criticism for my last fight, but myself and my trainer Danny Vaughan have worked on that in the gym, and we’ve learned.”

Godoy said: “I’m really thankful of the opportunity given to me and I’m extremely excited for this fight. We’ll see on the night of the fight how it goes. I’ll analyse the situation and we’ll go from there.”

Cully said: “I’ve seen a few interviews that Joe has done, and he seems to think we’re entering a strongman competition on Saturday.

“It’s a boxing match at the end of the day and I’m excited to showcase my skills. I believe I’m a better boxer in all departments, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table.

“It’s a fight that me and Joe both deserve credit for it, we didn’t have to take this fight at this stage of our career, but we both stepped up to prove who’s the best.”

Fitzpatrick said: “I’ve had a great camp and I’m as fit as I can be. I think I’m a lot stronger than Gary, so I’m looking forward to Saturday. Let’s do it.”

Joyce said: “I believe I’m at the weight I feel comfortable at and really strong at. I thought it was at featherweight but I realised in my last fight that it wasn’t the weight for me.

“My sparring has been on point. This is one of the best camps we’ve had in a long time. Lee Haskins has been in the ring with good guys in the past and has done it, but come Saturday I bring a different game and tactics.

“I’ve got that experience behind me as an amateur, and I’ve learned a lot over the years. It’s going to be an amazing night on Saturday, and with the other fighters on this bill, it’s truly an honour to be on it.”

Haskins said: “Throughout my career I’ve won everything I could possibly win, but for me I’m here to prove to myself I can still do it. In the gym I’m sparring everybody and I’m still on top.

“If I thought I was past it then I wouldn’t be here today. I boxed in Belfast when I fought Ryan Burnett and loved it. David Oliver Joyce is a tough fighter so I’m looking forward to sharing the ring with him.

“He seems to come forward and walk onto shots, and that’s what we’ve prepared for. I haven’t been in a big fight like this for a long time, so I’m excited to show people what I can do.”

Crocker said: “I’ve really worked hard in this camp. John has been there on the big stages and only been beaten by good lads, so I know he’s a quality opponent. We’re both coming to win and it will be fireworks on Saturday night.”

Thain said: “The reason I’ve come back is because I love boxing and I love the sport. I’m looking forward to this fight because it’s two men coming to win.

“It’s a great opportunity for me in a great city. Me and Lewis will bring out the best of each other, I wanted a fight that represents a challenge and I’ve definitely got that.”

MTK Global Professional Development Coordinator Jamie Conlan said: “Last year we set our stall out very high with numerous fights at the Ulster Hall, and we’re trying to build the place into a cauldron in Belfast.

“These match-ups could fill big arenas I believe. This is a big card full of big fights. I’m very excited about what the future holds for everybody at MTK Global.”

The fight week activities continue with the weigh-in at the Europa Hotel at 1:00pm on Friday, before the all-important fight night at the Ulster Hall on Saturday.
