The rules are if a fighter cannot continue after an illegal strike like that one, the opponent gets dqed. The ref was seeing if Diego could continue as he wasn't visibly wobbled or koed. Diego said the blood was hindering his vision and he couldn't continue. Sure it was bs. The ref knew it too but was doing what he knew was right. Had the ref done what you proposed, he would have been wrong.

I don't accept that's the case. The rules of unified MMA state what is illegal, it's a rather long list that includes knees, low blows, finger pokes, headbutts, etc. What happens in the event of a foul is then the referee's discretion, judging the severity of the blow, accidental/intentional etc.
This was te first time I was introduced to the rule. This is from 2007 where Herb Dean was the ref. He explains the DQ during the post fight interview. Herb's explanation is at about the 5:15 mark.

Apparently McGregor/Gaethje is a possibility in Dublin at 170. I would lean heavily towards a Conor win via 1st rd ko if this happens. Justin is tough, but he gets hit too much.

Chael Sonnen on Dan Hooker and Justin Gaethje......
He points his finger to where he is going to hit the ball, just like Babe Ruth did, and he put the ball there, and now he is going to be in the cage with Paul Felder, and as terrible as a proposition that sounds like to most of us, that is what he wanted. And he has now dangled Justin Gaethje.... Nobody calls out Justin Gaethje... You fight Justin Gaethje when you have to fight Justin Gaethje... Nobody wants to fight Justin Gaethje.... You pretend you want to fight Justin Gaethje..... The phone rings, you grab your balls and say yes because thats the business you are in and thats the life you have chosen, but deep in your heart you dont want that fight, unless you are Dan Hooker.
Had me in tears, spot on about Gaethje

Wow. This was actually quite hard to listen to. An interview with Diego Sanchez's coach/manager, Joshua Fabia. As always, full props to Luke, who conducted himself as a straight forward, yet neutral interviewer. Incredibly professional given the circumstances.

This guy dodged every single question. Took every opportunity to potshot and lay blame to Greg Jackson and Rogan. When asked to break down technical aspects with Diego, he offered nothing of substance, instead diverting to some spiritual mantra that maybe a Bruce Lee wannabee would do. In short, with the minimal, neutral input by Thomas, this guy, on his own accord, well and truly painted himself as a charlatan.

Well I can't find exactly those rules but even in this example this is a case of double jeapordy... shamrock got a point off... then DQ'd. At best it should be a NC if the other bloke claims he can't continue after 5 mins imo.

Again the Amir Khan vs Crawford example comes to mind. Seems like if that fight were in a cage then Khan gets a DQ win

Really looking forward to Hooker vs. Felder tonight. It's a perfect 50/50 type matchup between 2 guys who are both on the cusp of real title contention.

Sadly the rest of the card is junk.

Yeah Hooker/Felder in an excellent matchup. Im still interested to see more of the local talent, but i can understand your feelings about the rest of the card, i dont think there is even another ranked fighter....

I feel the same as you about the match-up. Hooker has been very impressive lately. I feel he's going to take this but rooting for Felder. A great boxing match and a great MMA match tonight.

Too fornicating close.

Personally thought Felder edged it, and despite appearances, thought Hooker ended up worse for wear.

Some of these post fight reflections bloody break my heart man. Certainly hope Felder isnt done.

This LW division just gets crazier and crazier.

That was a tremendous fight. The decision was fair, I think anything between 49-46 Hooker and 48-47 Felder was reasonable.

I was edging it for Felder until the takedown. I'd hate to see Felder go too, but if it's too taxing on his family life, then I completely understand. He probably makes a pretty penny commentating anyway.

And yeah, they'll both be feeling this one for a while. Looks like Hooker has a broken jaw.

Definitely a tremendous fight. Although, 4-1 Hooker would have been highly questionable.

I think you could have reasonably given Hooker rounds 1, 2, 3, and 5. I personally didn't, but rounds 2 and 5 in particular were razor thin so I could see it being possible.

Yeah. That makes sense. It just seems crazy at first thought that such a close fight could go 4 rounds to one.

Felt like 3-2 Felder here... but knew that the takedown in the 5th could make the difference. No surprise here.

Pointless takedowns have been a hemorrhoid in my ass for judging fights for years now. I think they still carry way too much weight with the judges.

Turned out to be a very good event overall. Some very good match making, which is all that can be asked at the end of the day.

I agree they carry too much weight. If a fighter scores a takedown, but there was no significant control, it shouldn't count too much. However, if a quick TD is scored in a razor thin round, then I do consider it to secure the round for the one getting the TD. I'd have to watch the 5th round again to decide if Felder should have taken that round despite the TD. I'm a bit fuzzy on it but iirc, I had Felder ahead in that round at the time of the TD.

Last night was a depressing outcome. As if the UFC hadn't ruined the FLW division badly enough, they finally decide to fill the vacant title and one guy misses weight by 2.5 pounds and then wins the fight.

I hear ya. Especially how conclusive it ended, it was looking inevitable towards the end. I've watched Figuadero a few times now, and dont recall him having visually such a size advantage in the division, I'm aware he missed weight.

Have no idea what happened with Cutelaba vs Ankalaev, but it was fornicating nuts while it lasted. Cutelaba seemed to be trying some drunken master business when the Ref stopped it

The only thing they can do now is make a Benavidez/Figueriedo rematch for the title and hope Figueriedo can make weight the next time. Or if Figueriedo can't make weight and has to move to 135 they could do a 4-man tournament with Benavidez, Formiga, Pantoja, and Askarov like they did when the title was inaugurated. But knowing the modern UFC they're more likely to just axe the whole division, because they're assholes who don't really care about the sport.

Cutelaba seems like a legit moron. The stoppage was bad but if you watch the replay you can see what the ref saw, which was Cutelaba wobbling around and staring into the distance rather than keeping his eyes on his opponent. If he was really putting on an act it reminds me of the Adonis Stevenson vs. Anthony Bonsante fight where Bonsante got dropped in the 1st round and psyched the ref into thinking he was KO'd cold when he wasn't.

I don’t think takedowns should score at all unless take down defence is scored. The advantage of getting a takedown should be enough on its own.

The ref in the Cutelaba fight should not be given another job in the cage. Useless and panicked performance. He’s got no place in there.
