Has to be SuperCruiser or JnrHeavy. Can’t break up the lineage of world heavyweight title.

It’s a fornicating horrible idea. A sensible, universal restructure of the weights is necessary at some point but adding more is daft.

First off.....poor match ! If Alverez was going straight back out again 2 months later that might be different.

I've long said the weight divisions from Middleweight upwards need an adjustment, but no more new divisions please ! The WBU tried this some years ago and it didn't take off thankfully. Hopefully it won't this time either.

All the big money fights will be above 225.. no doubt..

Anyone below 225 can still fight someone at 250, unless WBC put strict rules in, then in that case the smaller HW's will just end up bulking up won't they?

Thing with Jr Heavyweight is, WBO already call their cruiserweight division the Junior Heavyweight division..

I know this doesn't concern the WBO, but what a mind fvck..

That would be bad, but imagine if they start referring to Muhammad Ali as the 3 time super-cruiser champ. Great example of the sport shooting itself in the foot again. Just fornicating why?

You know what ? during lockdown and the lack of decent boxing,I haven't missed it once, all i do now is look on here at the results, can't even be bothered to catch it on youtube the next day.Been following the sport since the early 80's and have lost interest and find it almost embarrasing explaining who the title holders are etc to casuals.

Aye I’ve been the same. There’s just so much shite attached to it now - multiple plastic titles, wankbags running around with a video camera fluffing anyone they can grab ten minutes of shite the can upload onto YouTube, prospects dodging anyone with a pulse, Adam Smith, spoilt little ego warriors giving it the big one on social media but then fighting cans, fat hype merchants headlining PPV cards whilst proper warriors half their weight get paid peanuts, promoters desperate to be the centre of attention, Shannon fornicating Courtney - it’s become an absolute fest of cockwombles.

There is a lot of trash and plastic hero’s out there

This is good, it should be some sensible numbers like that. BUT I think the gaps are too big at the bottom end.

Amateurs at major tournaments just scrapped Light Welter 64kg/141lbs/10st 1lb and Light Fly 48kg/106lbs/7st 8lb and mushed the other ones into each other to fill the gaps. There were proper world class 48 kg boxers just well to small for the 52 division, got battered. The 64kg lads either move down to 63, which may be impossible, or up to 69. It’s too much I think.

It’s hard to get right for sure but adding more weights isn’t the way

Thats a disproportionately big gap from middle to light heavy. Might need one more div in there. kind reminds me of the light heavy to cruiser gap they have now. witch is just tooo big to have mature adults successfully move up from.

It's middle, super middle and light heavy that need a small adjustment.

There's a pound less in scope at middleweight than there is in the two divisions below it :maybe: It's outdated.

Maybe something like :

Middleweight - 11st 8 lbs
Super middleweight - 12st 3 lbs
Light heavyweight - 12st 12 lbs

Tony Bellew wants Deontay Wilder vs Oleksandr Usyk for vacant title in new ‘super-cruiserweight’ division for small heavyweights

Tony Bellew has stated that he is in favour of creating a new ‘super-cruiserweight’ division in boxing.

At the WBC convention last month, the former cruiserweight world champion was placed in charge of a new committee to investigate Don Majeski’s proposal to form a new weight class between cruiserweight and heavyweight.

He told talkSPORT Fight Night: “I am a fighter who fought obviously at light-heavyweight.

“I boiled down to that weight category and then jumped up immediately and went to cruiserweight.

“I’ve done it, so I understand how tough the weight jump is.

“The difference in all the other weight categories is minimal – 4lbs, 3lbs, sometimes 6lbs.

“The weight jump from light-heavyweight to cruiserweight is from 175lbs to 200lbs – that’s 25lbs.

“That’s just too much, I get what Don Majeski’s saying because in the current game at heavyweight the big boys are too big and the smaller heavyweights are not able to compete with the bigger boys.

“As great as some of them are – the likes of Oleksandr Usyk – it’s looked at now that he’s not gonna be able to compete with the monsters.

“Not because of his boxing ability, purely because of his size…

“Here’s where my thinking goes with the WBC, and I’ve said this to Mauricio Sulaiman the WBC president.

“I actually like the divisions going from 175lbs up to 190lbs [instead of 200lbs].

“That will make it a bit better for the guys who are struggling at light-heavyweight, but are not monster cruiserweights.

“Then, if I had my way, I would go from 190lbs to 220lbs. You’re looking at the ‘small heavyweights’.

“I would’ve fallen into that category quite comfortably, Oleksandr Usyk falls into that category quite comfortably.

“Deontay Wilder falls into that category quite comfortably, David Haye falls into that category quite comfortably.”

When this idea was initially floated by the WBC a couple of years ago, their thought was to make a new ‘super-heavyweight’ division.

This was slammed by fans who insisted that the iconic heavyweight division must remain boxing’s greatest prize.

Bellew agreed: “You can’t mess around, you can’t have a ‘super-heavyweight’ in boxing.

“There’s one heavyweight division, that’s all there should ever be, you can’t go messing around with the names of them.

“People say, ‘Well, what would you call it?’

“I would say you go to cruiserweight [at 190lbs] and maybe ‘super-cruiserweight’ [at 220lbs].

“Something of that ilk. You can’t ever have a ‘super-heavyweight’ division, it’s not reasonable, it’s ridiculous.

“This weight class we’re looking to bring in is the perfect thing and if I had complete control of something like this, the first match-up I would look to do would be Deontay Wilder vs Oleksandr Usyk for the belt.

“It’s an amazing fight, the division would be relevant immediately with a fight of that magnitude.”

Did Bellew or Usyk struggle to make cruiserweight? If not then then they are cruiserweights fighting out of their division and not actually small heavyweights.
In Povetkin, we've just seen a now 41 year old smallish heavyweight knock spark out an in-his-prime heavyweight two stone heavier than him.
I can see his point about the jump to cruiserweight from light-heavy but the day before weigh-ins is part of the debate imo.

Cruisers are such a weird division for that same reason. Not often you see a ripped cruiser and I couldn’t tell you how much the drain compared to, say, a welter. But it’s easier to not diet, not drain and get paid more for being a heavy. For that reason I’ve always had a good bit of respect for Usyk and Haye
