Katie Taylor vs. Miriam Gutierrez - 14 November 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Image

Katie Taylor will follow up her recent victory over Delfine Persoon with a November bout against Spanish boxer Miriam Gutierrez.

The 37-year-old is a mandatory challenger as she holds the interim WBA lightweight belt.

Gutierrez has won all of her 13 fights so far, with five knockouts.

Taylor, 34, came out on top in her rematch against Persoon last month.

Promoter Eddie Hearn told Boxing Social: "Katie Taylor has to fight her WBA mandatory next, which is [Miriam] Gutierrez, that will be on a stand alone card in November that will be announced shortly. That card will have three world title fights on it in total."

Hearn added: "I spoke to Katie Taylor about an all-women’s card. I thought that was a really good idea. Katie Taylor looked at me like she wanted to punch me when I said that. When I started thinking about it I understand what’s she’s saying.

"What they’re fighting for, away from the world championship, is equality. It’s not women’s boxing and men’s boxing – it’s boxing.

"So actually, when I started thinking about it, listening to what she said, I realised that a women’s only card is detrimental in my opinion to the growth of what we’re trying to do."

Press Release

Matchroom will promote the first ever women’s World Title triple-header on Saturday November 14, with Katie Taylor, Terri Harper and Rachel Ball all starring in an historic evening of boxing shown live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Taylor (16-0, 6 KOs) retained her Undisputed Lightweight World Title with a unanimous decision win over Delfine Persoon as their highly anticipated rematch produced another brutal battle on the final weekend of Fight Camp in August.

The Irish star puts her World Titles on the line once more against Mandatory Challenger Miriam Gutierrez (13-0, 5 KOs), the undefeated Spaniard who has held the WBA’s Interim World Title since November 2019 following her win over Keren Batiz.

“I'm delighted to be headlining another fight night on Sky Sports,” said Taylor. “When I turned professional it was a bit of step into the unknown in terms of how it all would go so to have these opportunities to headline cards is something I never take for granted.

“It's been a pretty quick turnaround from my last fight but I'm always looking towards the next challenge and I really wanted to fight again before the end of the year. The pandemic has obviously made it a very uncertain time in terms of scheduling fights so I'm really excited to have a date to focus on.

“I'm expecting a very tough fight against an undefeated challenger, but I've been back in training camp in the US for the past couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to successfully defending my titles on November 14.”

“I am very happy, eager and excited,”
said Gutierrez. “I am preparing myself 100% for this fight with Katie. This is the great challenge that I have pursued in my sports career, to be able to fight for the undisputed crown.”

Denaby’s Harper (10-0-1, 5 KOs) retained her WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight World Titles with a thrilling split decision draw against Liverpool’s Natasha Jonas in an historic Fight of the Year contender at the top of the bill on Fight Camp Week 2.

‘Belter’ faces her first WBC Mandatory challenger in Spanish-Norwegian Katharina Thanderz (13-0, 2 KOs), the undefeated Interim WBC Super-Featherweight World Champion who claimed the title against Brazilian Danila Ramos after a brutal ten round battle last November.

“This is the most excited I’ve been for a fight, I feel like I’ve got a lot to prove,” said Harper. “We’ve had the opportunity in this camp to work on lots of new things, having a strength and conditioning coach join the team. I want to go out and put the wrongs right.”

“It’s an amazing feeling to know that I’m finally fighting for the World Title,”
said Thanderz. “I’ve been waiting such a long time for this moment, and I just know I’ll give my everything to win the title. Harper is a young and talented fighter. I think she’s a very hard-working girl. She’s fast, she has a good technique, she has stamina, and she’s a very good fighter. It will a pleasure to share the ring with her.

“I am confident I can beat her. I have a very good feeling, and I’m working very hard in my camp to be the best version of myself. I know it will be very difficult, especially because of the circumstances of the fight, but I’m prepared to surprise and shock everyone when I get the win. I feel very good about fighting in the UK. I’ve never fought in England, so I can’t wait to have the experience of fighting in a completely new country with so many boxing fans.”

Walsall’s Ball (6-1) lands a dream World Title shot on the back of her breakout win over Shannon Courtenay on the third week of Fight Camp. The 29-year-old takes on popular undefeated Australian Ebanie Bridges (4-0, 2 KOs) for the vacant WBA Bantamweight crown.

“I’ve been craving a big fight, now I’ve got it,” said Bridges. “I’m not coming to Britain to mess around; I’m going to take this opportunity with both hands and take that belt back to Australia with me in exciting style.”

“After my last fight I’m hungrier than ever, training harder than ever and asking myself everyday how I can improve,” said Ball. “I couldn’t be more excited for this fight. We’re friends but this fight isn’t going to be pretty, it’s business.”

“This a historic moment,”
said promoter Eddie Hearn. “A huge night of boxing that will be headlined by not one but three women’s World Title fights. Katie Taylor has spun the game on its head since she turned pro and has paved the way for so many great female fighters. Katie faces the second Mandatory Challenger during her undisputed reign in tough undefeated Spaniard Miriam Gutierrez.

“While fresh off a Fight of the Year contender at Fight Camp, Terri Harper faces her first Mandatory Challenger in undefeated Spanish-Norwegian Katharina Thanderz and in a fairy tale story Rachel Ball has a chance to become World Champion against popular Aussie Ebanie Bridges. This is a major statement from us and our broadcast partners, don’t miss an incredible night on November 14.”

“Katie Taylor continues her epic journey as one of the world’s elite boxers on a terrific triple-header of women’s World Title action,”
said Adam Smith, Head of Boxing Development at Sky Sports. “The Irish star displayed grit and determination in a punishing rematch win over Delfine Persoon in Fight Camp, and her renowned skills should also be on show against Miriam Gutierrez.

“Terri Harper battled to a thrilling draw with Natasha Jonas in one of the year’s most enthralling fights and she is back in action, defending her WBC belt versus Katharina Thanderz. Rachel Ball also receives a World Title fight after she dropped and shocked Shannon Courtenay, but she must now overcome Ebanie Bridges. Three fantastic World Title fights - all live on Sky Sports!”

Women's tripleheader..

I don't mind one womens fight on a card, but I think this will be an all women's card.

Good thing there will be no fans..

They really are doing something with KT aren't they.

Eddie Hearn reveals the message he got from Katie Taylor asking him to be her promoter

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed Katie Taylor directly messaged him asking him to be her promoter.

Hearn took part in the viral Twitter challenge ‘how it started, how it’s going’ with Taylor’s message being ‘how it started’ and then a photo of them together with Taylor’s belts showing ‘how it’s going’.

Taylor’s message to Hearn said: "I hope you don’t mind me reaching out like this out of the blue. I’ve been seriously considering turning pro the last few months, I think I could do for women’s pro boxing what I did for the amateur sport: bring it into focus and generate some serious interest.

“I already have a global profile and a great fan base. Of course, the pro game is impossible without a great promoter so I’m wondering if you would be interested in talking more about this?”

After Taylor’s sign-off, Hearn responded with a very eager: “Hi Katie – I’m very interested. What’s the best number to reach you on?”

And the rest is history…

Taylor signed for Hearn’s promoting company Matchroom Boxing in 2016 and since then has had an unbeaten pro boxing record.

Eddie Hearn To Stage Four Shows at SSE Arena, Wembley

Eddie Hearn will stage four shows at the 12,500-capacity SSE Arena, Wembley, as he aims to increase pressure for a return of fans.

The Oleksandr Usyk-Dereck Chisora heavyweight fight on October 31 will be the first of the shows at the venue, formerly known as Wembley Arena. It will then be followed at Wembley by the show headlined by Katie Taylor against Miriam Gutierrez on November 14 and then the November 21 Dillian Whyte-Alexander Povetkin bill. The final card will be headlined by Billy Joe Saunders making a defence of his WBO super-middleweight title. That is currently scheduled for November 28, although it might move back a week if Sky Sports decide not to go head-to-head with BT Sport’s screening of the Daniel Dubois-Joe Joyce heavyweight clash.

The shows will go ahead whether or not fans are allowed but, by going to such a big venue, Hearn hopes to be able to let fans in if he is given the green light by the Government. If fans are allowed in, none will be allowed at ringside. It will also provide a useful trial looking ahead to Anthony Joshua’s world heavyweight title defence in December, which Hearn hopes to admit more than 4,000 for.

“I am planning the fights with no fans at the moment,” Hearn said to Boxing Scene. “We will have the same venue for four events and just keep canvassing, asking for 1,500 or 2,000 fans to be let in.

“I don’t like to go into big arenas and seeing loads of empty seats everywhere. We have to get creative with the production, but the plan is to fill them up or at least certainly get some bums on seats.

“Early doors I hope we can get 1,000 in, show the Government how we can get it done safely and from there escalating to AJ.”

A rise in coronavirus cases, which has even seen Hearn and his father, Barry, test positive, has led to more restrictions in the UK, with all pubs and restaurants in central Scotland closing for 16 days and several areas in lockdown.

Hearn is also hopeful that a crowd of 4,700 may be permitted for Anthony Joshua’s WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight title defence on December 12 at the O2 Arena, London, after a concert the previous week at the venue was given approval to have a live audience.

The band Squeeze will play the O2 Arena on December 5 and 4,700 socially-distanced seats will be on sale at the 19,000-seater venue.

“There is a music event approved the week before AJ,” he said. “That would suggest we might be able to do that number for AJ, but that is subject to them not changing their mind. We had the Crucible, 400 people for every day for the World Snooker Championships and after one day they closed it down.

“The pressure is definitely mounting for fans to be allowed back, but on the other hand they are talking about closing pubs and restaurants,”
Hearn said. “So how can you close pubs and restaurants but allow people to go to sporting events?

“Sooner or later they are going to have a decision on their hands. Do you open things up and put in what measures you can, or do you close everything down again and everything could be screwed?”

No opponent has been announced yet for Saunders, who has not boxed since his knockout win over Marcelo Coceres on the KSI-Logan Paul bill in Los Angeles last November. However, Hearn says he is keen on an all British fight.

“I’d like to do a Brit,” he said. “So it is probably one of [Martin] Murray, [Rocky] Fielding or [John] Ryder.”

Two super middleweight bouts added to Nov. 14th show

Two all-British men's super middleweight bouts have been added to the November 14th ’s women's triple-header undercard, live on Sky Sports and DAZN. Jamie Cox (25-2, 14 KOs) meets Jack Cullen (18-2-1, 9 KOs) whilst John Docherty steps up against Jack Arnfield, both supporting the following trio of title fights: Katie Taylor vs. Miriam Gutierrez, Terri Harper vs. Katharina Thanderz and Ebanie Bridges vs. Rachel Ball.

A southpaw, Cox (25-2, 14 KOs) is returning to action with a new team after two years out the ring. (his last fight was a stoppage loss to John Ryder). “I’ve been out a while now, I’m looking forward to getting back in there. I’ve got a new set up with Tony Borg down in Wales which has given my boxing a new dimension which I’ll show in November,” said Cox.

‘Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver’ Jack Cullen looks to return to winning ways following a draw with Zak Chelli at Matchroom Fight Camp. “This is a big name in Jamie Cox, I couldn’t have asked for a better opponent in the circumstances. He comes to fight and as you know I bring it as well. It’ll make for a fan friendly fight for those watching I’m sure,” said Cullen.

Big punching John Docherty (9-0, 7 KOs) has set his sights on domestic titles for 2021 but has Jack Arnfield to navigate first. “Jack’s experienced but I’m levels above him and I’ll show that come fight night. I’ll smash him to pieces,” said Docherty.

Moving up from middleweight after losing his last but, Arnfield (25-3, 6 KOs) believes the extra weight to play with will be telling in the next phase of his career. “I was a tall middleweight, the past 2 or 3 fights was a struggle but I’m feeling fit and healthier up a weight which will reflect in my punch power. I’m not overlooking ‘The Doc’ but I’ve set myself bigger goals,” said Arnfield.

“Two really good super middleweight fights added to our championship triple-header on November 14th,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s great to see Jamie Cox back, he looks in great shape but faces a tough challenge in the always exciting Jack Cullen. A huge step up in class for John Docherty against two-time British Title challenger Jack Arnfield. Two 50-50 fights confirmed for what will be a great night of action live on Sky Sports and DAZN.”

Cox vs. Cullen and Docherty vs. Arnfield helps shape a huge night of women's world title action with further undercard additions announced shortly; Irish star Taylor (16-0, 6 KOs) puts her world lightweight championship on the line once more against Gutierrez (13-0, 5 KOs)... Harper (10-0-1, 5 KOs) faces her first WBC mandatory challenger in Thanderz (13-0, 2 KOs)... and Ball (6-1) takes on undefeated Australian Bridges (4-0, 2 KOs) for the vacant WBA bantamweight crown.

Sauerland Press Release

Liverpool Light-Heavyweight talent Thomas Whittaker-Hart has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and will face Bradford’s Jermaine Springer over eight rounds on Saturday November 14, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

Whittaker-Hart (4-0, 2 KOs), a former England and Team GB man who was planning on staying in the amateur game until the Tokyo Olympic Games, trains with Joe McNally at the Rotunda ABC in Kirkdale and has made a perfect start to life in the professional ranks.

The former English National titlist, who is managed by former WBC Cruiserweight World Champion Tony Bellew, made his pro debut on the Liam Smith vs. Sam Eggington show at the M&S Arena in March 2019, outpointing Poland’s Przemyslaw Binienda.

Three wins have followed for the 25-year-old prospect who will be looking to push on under his new promotional banner, starting with a win over Springer (7-1, 1 KO) next month on an historic World Title triple-header card.

“Tony phoned me a couple of days ago to tell me that I’m signing with Matchroom,” said Whittaker-Hart. “I was made up with the news! It’s the best promotional umbrella to be under at the minute so I was buzzing when I found out.

“I’m looking forward to performing on the biggest platform. I’m going to showcase what I know I can really do. I’m pleased that I’ve got the opportunity to be able to broadcast my skills to such a big audience on Sky Sports and DAZN.

“I’ve made a positive start to life in the pros with four wins and two knockouts. I don’t think I’ve showed enough of what I can really do. Now I’ve signed with Matchroom I can start to really push on and I know the opponents are going to get harder, that’s when you’ll see the best version of me.

“I don’t know a lot about Springer but I’ve seen the odd clip of him. I know that he’s a good step up for me at this stage of my career. I’m more than confident in my ability to get the job done and I’ll be more than ready on November 14. It’s a great show to be a part of.

“I want to keep on improving and going up the levels. I’m planning on getting to the top – that’s where I want to be. I couldn’t ask for much more with Tony managing me and Matchroom promoting me. Tony has helped me out a lot and he’s got me into a great position. He’s been there and done it so I look up to him massively.”

“I’m very excited about Thomas Whittaker-Hart!”
said Bellew. “He’s been out the ring 12 months but I’m confident that within these next 12 months he will be in and amongst the top 3 domestically and ready for the British Title! He’s been working hard and has been sparring with renowned World Champions and vastly experienced fighters! The best is yet to come from Thomas.”

Super-Middleweight Double-Header Added To Nov 14 Taylor vs. Gutierrez Card

Cox-Cullen & Docherty-Arnfield confirmed for World Title triple-header card – Two all-action Super-Middleweight bouts have been added to November 14’s World Title triple-header undercard, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Jamie Cox meets Jack Cullen whilst John Docherty steps up against Jack Arnfield, supporting Katie Taylor vs. Miriam Gutierrez, Terri Harper vs. Katharina Thanderz and Ebanie Bridges vs. Rachel Ball.

Swindon Southpaw Cox (25-2, 14 KOs) returns with a new team after two years out the ring.

“I’ve been out a while now, I’m looking forward to getting back in there. I’ve got a new set up with Tony Borg down in Wales which has given my boxing a new dimension which I’ll show in November,” said Cox.

‘Little Lever’s Meat Cleaver’ Jack Cullen (18-2-1, 9 KOs) looks to return to winning ways following a draw with Zak Chelli at Matchroom Fight Camp.

Now campaigning at 168lbs, Arnfield (25-3, 6 KOs) believes the extra weight to play with will be telling in the next phase of his career.

“I was a tall Middleweight, the past 2/3 fights was a struggle but I’m feeling fit and healthier up a weight which will reflect in my punch power. I’m not overlooking ‘The Doc’ but I’ve set myself bigger goals,” said Arnfield.

“Two really good Super-Middleweight fights added to our World Championship triple-header on November 14,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “It’s great to see Jamie Cox back, he looks in great shape but faces a tough challenge in the always exciting Jack Cullen.

“A huge step up in class for John Docherty against two-time British Title challenger Jack Arnfield. Two 50-50 fights confirmed for what will be a great night of action live on Sky Sports and DAZN.”

Cox vs. Cullen and Docherty vs. Arnfield helps shape a huge night of World Title action with further undercard additions announced shortly; Irish star Taylor (16-0, 6 KOs) puts her Lightweight World Titles on the line once more against Mandatory Challenger Gutierrez (13-0, 5 KOs), Denaby’s Harper (10-0-1, 5 KOs) faces her first WBC Mandatory challenger in Spanish-Norwegian Thanderz (13-0, 2 KOs) and Walsall’s Ball (6-1) takes on undefeated Australian Bridges (4-0, 2 KOs) for the vacant WBA Bantamweight crown.

Katharina Thanderz battles Terri Harper on November 14th

Katharina Thanderz (13-0, 2 KOs) will challenge Britain’s Terri Harper (10-0-1, 5 KOs) for the WBC and IBO World Super Featherweight titles on November 14th.

Norwegian Thanderz, who boasts an unbeaten professional record, became mandatory in November 2019 after claiming the interim WBC World Super Featherweight title with a points decision over Danila Ramos of Brazil.

Current champion Terri Harper caught the eye last time out, a pulsating 10-round split draw with Natasha Jonas saw the Doncaster fighter retain the titles that will now be on the line in the clash with Thanderz.

While respecting the potential in Harper, Thanderz believes she has the tools to perform on the night.

“It’s an amazing feeling to know that I’m finally fighting for the world title.

I’ve been waiting such a long time for this moment, and I know I’ll give my everything to win the title.

“Harper is a young and talented fighter. I think she’s a very hard working girl. She’s fast, she has a good technique, she has stamina, and she’s a very good fighter. It will be a pleasure to share the ring with her.

“I am confident I can beat her. I have a very good feeling, and I’m working very hard in my camp to be the best version of myself. I know it will be very difficult , especially because of the circumstances of the fight, but I’m prepared to surprise and shock everyone when I get the win.”

Fighting for the first time on British soil, Thanderz is positive and upbeat on her chances.

“I feel very good about fighting in the UK. I’ve never fought in England, so I can’t wait to have the experience of fighting in a complete new country with so many boxing fans.”

At 13-0 and 10-0-1 respectively, an unbeaten showdown between Thanderz and Harper is a mouthwatering prospect with the winner walking away with unified world champion status.

“This is the most excited I’ve been for a fight, I feel like I’ve got a lot to prove,”
said Harper. “We’ve had the opportunity in this camp to work on lots of new things, having a strength and conditioning coach join the team. I want to go out and put the wrongs right.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland backed his fighter to come away with the win, and believes it is the perfect time to introduce Thanderz to the British scene.

“Katharina brings that Viking power and warrior spirit, and it’s a good time for her to come up against elite opposition. She’s undefeated, the interim belt holder and following the trail set by Cecilia Brækhus in bringing a world title back to Norway.

She’s said herself she’s going for greatness and you can see it in the way she operates, we can’t wait!”

Eddie Hearn added “This is an historic moment. A huge night of boxing that will be headlined by not one but three women’s World Title fights. Katie Taylor has spun the game on its head since she turned pro and has paved the way for so many great female fighters.”

Chisora v Usyk: BBC Radio 5 Live signs deal to include Joshua, Taylor and Saunders fights

Derek Chisora versus Oleksandr Usyk will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday as part of a deal that also includes Anthony Joshua's next bout.

Chisora's Wembley Arena fight kick-starts a hectic spell in British boxing and BBC Radio 5 Live will air ringside commentary for four huge fight nights.

The deal includes world-title bouts featuring Katie Taylor on 14 November and Billy Joe Saunders on 4 December.

World heavyweight champion Joshua takes on Kubrat Pulev on 12 December.

"We were there for Anthony Joshua's redemption mission in Saudi Arabia last December and we'll be back at ringside for his first fight in more than a year," said BBC Sport boxing correspondent Mike Costello.

"With Billy Joe Saunders also back in action and Katie Taylor topping a bill featuring three women's world title fights, we've rarely featured a more hectic spell of boxing on 5 Live.

"Joshua's showdown against Kubrat Pulev closes out an unprecedented run of fights in British heavyweight boxing and it all begins at Wembley Arena on Saturday."

All of the bouts will be behind closed doors at Wembley Arena and BBC Sport will offer live text commentary alongside radio coverage.

Chisora, 36, is an underdog against Ukraine's Usyk, who has 17 wins from 17 bouts and held all four world titles at cruiserweight before moving up to the heavyweight division.

Taylor's bout two weeks later will see the 34-year-old Irishwoman risk all four of her women's world lightweight titles against Spain's undefeated Miriam Gutierrez, 37. The fight night features three women's bouts - all for world titles at different weights - at the top of the card.

Saunders, 31, will look to find momentum in defending his WBO world super-middleweight title against fellow Briton Martin Murray on 4 December. Murray, 38, has fought for a world title four times before and his five career defeats in 45 bouts have all come against elite opposition.

And Joshua will round off a hectic pre-Christmas period when he faces Bulgaria's Pulev with three of the four world heavyweight titles on the line.

A win could go a long way to setting up a 2021 meeting with Tyson Fury, who fights on 5 December and holds the only belt Joshua does not possess.

Katie Taylor vs Miriam Gutierrez to be streamed via YouTube, Facebook and skysports.com

Historic triple-header of women's world title fights on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports, will also be streamed for free on YouTube, Facebook and skysports.com; Katie Taylor headlines, Terri Harper makes a defence of her world title and Rachel Ball battles to become the latest champion

Sky Sports has announced that it will make this Saturday's Fight Night boxing - including undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor's defence against Miriam Gutierrez - available to all via multiple digital platforms.

Taylor's lightweight bout against Spaniard Gutiérrez - as well as Terri Harper's WBC super-featherweight defence against Katharina Thanderz and Rachel Ball's WBA bantamweight title fight with Jorgelina Guanini - will be available to Sky Sports customers on Sky Sports Arena and non-subscribers alike, this Saturday from 7pm on the broadcaster's YouTube and Facebook channels, as well as on www.skysports.com.

As part of Sky Sports' commitment to women's sport - first announced back in March - the move comes with the aim of ensuring elite women's sport is more easily accessible to the public through both increasing its existing coverage and by strengthening its digital output.

Adam Smith, Sky Sports Head of Boxing Development said: "We're delighted to be able to make Saturday's triple-header of women's world title fights, a world first, available to a wider audience to showcase some of the brightest talents in the sport.

"We've been with Katie from the beginning of her professional journey and are proud to be a part of the boom we're seeing in women's boxing. Through live streaming the action, we are able to bring more boxing fans closer to the hard-hitting action than ever before with this world first."

Eddie Hearn, managing director of Matchroom Sport, said: "This is more ground-breaking news that helps us push women's boxing to where it needs to be.

"The momentum of the last few years led by Katie Taylor has been special to watch but we have still got a long way to go. Nights like Saturday change the narrative of the sport, and as I have said before, it's not men's boxing and it's not women's boxing, it's just boxing.

"Katie Taylor is a trailblazer and it is only right that she headlines this card on Saturday on a moment that we have all been working towards for a very long time.

"The key is to give these great fighters the platform to become stars and achieve their dreams. Without the support from Sky Sports this would not be possible and I'm so happy that so many people will be able to watch Saturday's event."

I don't know a single thing about Gutierrez, and have never heard of her, but I'm gonna make a prediction for this fight right now.

Katie Taylor wins every round, never hurts her, and wins a decision.

Gutierrez's last fight is on YouTube, She's literally got no defence to an overhand right.
Early to middle rounds stoppage.

It'll be nice if you're right.
