Referee Frank Cappuccino

Post by Ghost Town Ghost »

Hey All,

Whenever I see discussions turn to the third man in the ring, Cappuccino's name doesn't seem to come up too often, in either a positive or negative light. He was always one of my favorites, can't remember any controversial calls from him at all. Some of my other favorites are Steve Smoger, Mitch Halpern, Randy Neumann, Joe Walcott, etc.

Any comments about him or other referees that you like/don't like?

Always remember Frank Cappuccino was the referee for the first Gatti/Ward fight, he could have stopped it in the ninth but he knew better than that luckily for us!
Thomas Taylor is the best referee in boxing today for me, never seen him make a bad call in a fight, not too officious, just lets the fighters get on with it, the way it should be.

I remember Frank Cappuccino in a neutral fashion, I remember his appearance, but can't recall any fights with him, except the mentioned ones.

Mills Lane is the best referee ever. Strict, fair and charismatic.

Frank Cappucino seemed to be one of them throwback referees who would let a fight go and go and go.

I also remember Frank's decision not to stop the first Ward-Gatti bout between rounds 9 and 10. That's my first thought when he's mentioned. There was a rumor that the ringside doctor knew Gatti had a broken rib and got in trouble for not stopping the fight. I've wondered since then if that story is true.
