Yeah, it was a good era. Since those times the division began to show competition constantly.

Yeah, that was the murderes' row! Johnny Nelson vs Sione Asipeli was a Thrillah in Vegas, forget the WBSS and all those modern bums!

I had Willie pep ahead of Harry greb in the top 5. I'd be hard pressed to put pep in the top 20 now.

- Heh, heh, and so does the 2nd and every other one you get your iron girdle in a curdle about.

Juan Carlos Gomez, 6-4, 190 lbs WBC 10-0, 9 KO might of killed Field in his first Qawi fight instead of putting him in ICU, but no matter, OP can sleep in Field's Jock Strap for his Corona Masking protection in between beating Mommy's tin pots all he wants.

Usyk never fought in the nascent little boy division of Field, duh! He was a full fledged traditional Heavy Olympic Gold Medalist turning pro with a unique opportunity of fighting in a traditional full fledged heavy division while accumulating the plethora of belts of his era along with the fledgling Ali trophy.

Currently 24-0, 15 KO as a pro, he's already surpassed the Field heavy record of 26-10-2, 15 KO and will soon be going in against the prime, great record setting unified champ better than any fighter Field has ever fought win/lose, or draw. Give it up. Peter Pan now a peanut butter and Tinker Belle a rainbow flag and your curdle more than a bit rusty :TU:

I think the top cruiserweights of the recent era surpass the top heavyweights of many eras.

Maybe we start a thread of 1960s/70s/80s heavyweights vs recent cruiserweights

The depth from 2011 to 2019 is pretty impressive in the span of 8 years you had
Usyk
Breidis
Gassiev
Hernandez
Okolie
Wlodardczyk
Cunningham
Huck
Glowacki
Makabu
Guillermo Jones
Cieslak
Hunter
Larena
Dorticos
etc

I think that group would definitely prevail over some heavyweight eras like that Joe Louis reigned over

The recent cruisers all awesome. That is why everyone is always talking about hem. It's all cruiserweight this, cruiserweight that.
Take Murat Gassiev. Three years ago, he wasn't even in the top 10. Never won another fight at cruiserweight. And yet he is now #5. What an achievement!

Depends who you are talking about. Of course there were some terrible heavyweights who got title shots who you are probably thinking of.
But there was also good ones like Buddy Baer, Billy Conn, Elmer, Ray, Turkey Thompson, Jimmy Bivins, Jersey Joe Walcott, and Ezzard Charles. And of course Louis himself.
World War II was also a factor.

Oh yeah, in the Jirov-Toney era everyone cared about the cruisers more than in any other time, forget the WBSS era!

Dumbling Alp is making history now with surpassing his own bits, i.e. "Cleveland Sweat Pea Williams is the HW Willie Pep" and "Holyfield won Lewis".

This is coming from the person who moved a guy (Gassiev) not in his top 10 to #5 without winning a fight at cruiserweight.

Never compared Cleveland Williams to Pernell Whitaker or Willie Pep.

the cruisers got loads of buzz over the last few years, i know you dont follow current boxing so you probably remained uninformed and missed it :TU:

courtney butler, terry mcgroom, sione asipeli, michael rsh........omg those awesome '10 round fighters' , beating world champs and top contenders, becoming the legit undisputed champ in the division and actually making several title defenses, just cant compare to the depth of beating them, all top 25 atg cruisers for sure

If you're going to include small HW champions from bygone eras, what about Floyd Patterson and Ezzard Charles?

well usyk becomes unified champ again, this time at hw, but like alp says he simply doesnt have the depth of '10 round fighters' like terry mcgroom, michael rush, and courtney butler on his resume

cant rank him high among the greats without huge wins like that
