Here's how I see it in relation to Canelo.
For me, Canelo is the pound for pound number 1 and has obligations to defend against certain opponents, I get that.
Same time in my eyes he's the best fighter in the sport and has to maintain his standing by boxing in riskier fights from time to time.
If those are title unifications then by all means let's do it, why not ?
It just so happens at this time no one could potentially beat him at 168 anyway, I bring up Benavidez as a possibility because I don't see anyone else.
His toughest challenge would probably Beterbiev at 175, these are the toughest challenges out there for Canelo as I see it.
Doesn't matter to me if they're title unifications or not.

Fox has been on a cost-cutting exercise and have recently opted out of lucrative deals with various sports, such as golf.

And Fox has also reduced its coverage of boxing’ support programming.

So there are rumours that Fox will terminate its current deal (which doesn’t expire until September 2022) with the PBC early.

Therefore, it’s possible that the Canelo-Plant bout might simply be a loss-leader, intended to attract a massive audience for Fox, regardless as to whether it costs the PBC money.

Al Haymon might be trying to persuade Fox of boxing’s commercial potential in order to persuade that network to renew their contract.

People forget that Canelo used to work with Al Haymon for a very long time, when Oscar De La Hoya was simply a figurehead (of GBP) cross-dressing fishnet stocking wearing drunk.

Haymon’s relationship with Hearn and Canelo is supposedly good. So I won’t be surprised to see the Mexican intermittently compete on the PBC after the Plant fight.

Al Haymon is taking a big risk on this and seeing Plant successful is possibly the biggest priority ever for PBC.

Canelo has already refused to sign with Haymon and went so far as to call off the entire negotiation with Plant at one point over PBC's pressure to get a contract.

Canelo has no issues with Haymon. The Mexican happily worked with Haymon for several years.

The only snag during negotiations was Canelo wanting to receive the same purse in case he had to fight a last-minute replacement should Plant withdrew through injury.

It was a mere formality that was obviously overcome.

Just because Canelo wants to be a free agent, it doesn't mean he's reluctant to work with the PBC or even ESPN.

Canelo fighting on Fox is a huge win for the PBC. The risk is minimal.

If Plant loses, they can always put forward Benavidez in a future fight.
