Is Canelo one of the Greatest of all time?

Post by Bandog »

All you have to do is fool the casual fans. After all, it's mostly their money. Canelo's last 10-12 yrs in a nutshell:

Josito Lopez was a 140lber.

Khan was a 147lber. Ahead but got KOd.

Maywether and Mosley were 147 and past their prime, May was 36 and SSM 39-40. Floyd made Canelo look at times like he'd never boxed before. 152 catchweight, after Canelo offered to go to 150 earlier that year.

Kirkland, and Anguelo had to cut 40lbs on short notice, slow plodders perfect for Canelo's style.

Canelo had to litterally be dragged in the ring to fight Lara, and got embarrassed at times, got out boxed, out landed, but won.

Trout had the open scoring bs, and was a close fight and fought different because of it.

Fielding, Yildrim, and JCC jr? I won't even mention them.

GGG beat Canelo 2x if your honest, or at least one and a draw. Canelo avoided GGG until he was 36 and looked vulnerable.

Plant was a decent win, but largley untested.

Jacobs was on the decline too, so add him to your resume, kind of like a Mosley win.

BJS avoided Andrade, and was inactive, so decent win.

Kovalev was semi-shot and drained with the rehydration clause.

For 10 years, at the same weights, Canelo refused to unify and fight Andrade. He couldn't without it. He jumped at the fight with Smith when Andrade was stripped.
Wonder why? He'd get out- boxed like he did with Bivol. Maybe not? He doesn't want to know. Andrade is a bigger, stronger, better version of Lara, and also a SP.

Now he's between a rock and a hard place. 168? He has to fight Bivol, Benevidez, Andrade, or Mall Charlo. I think he loses all.

Maybe he should take a couple years off and fight Beterbeiv if he beats JSjr..wait til he gets 39-40. Or retire.

If I were Canelo, I'd take the GGG fight and retire. No one would blame him. I don't think his ego will allow it though. He's still a prime age.

I do think the Canelo bubble has oficially popped though. Apologies for the wordy response. Not a Canelo hater, think he's a great boxer, just not as great as most people think, and hasn't improved his skills like people think either. The "Canelo beating Usyk" made me laugh, but almost throw up too.

He's made a great living fighting the right guys, at the right weights, at the right times, and having judges help him out in tough fights. I doubt if his ego could handle 2 losses in a row to anyone.

You can play games with any resume to discredit it.

You make a great point, and I agree. It was just my opportunity to do it with Canelo. Believe me, it took some time because I type slow! :OhYes:

You are right, and hopefully they will be. I think his next 3-5 years defines his career more than the previous 15 though.

What challenges will he take, and if he wins them. In 5 yrs he will be 36, the age Floyd was when they fought.

no one today is taking more challenges than him

look at the absolute trash some of his supposed rivals are fighting

he got beat by probably the best light heavy in the world, in his 4th weight division. none of these candy ass blabber mouths are challenging themselves with anything close to that. by comparison, andrade moved up to 168 to fight zack f@cking parker; he didnt move to 175 to fight bivol. when you dare to be great, chances are you'll take some losses. look at all the greats who did.

although ya, the stuff about beating or hanging with usyk was just insane. it was getting to a point where the hype had gotten out of control and it was time for him to lose to give people some perspective

I have to honestly say I didn't think he'd take on Bivol, but props to him for taking the challenge. Knocking Canelo down a notch might be good for him. His team needs to tell him he got his ass kicked, and needs to change his strategy and conditioning, or not take the rematch. He'll get smoked again.

He achieved more than any active boxer and is nowhere near retirement. Just wait until he retire to judge. Btw, speaking of your logic:
Is Marvin Hagler one of greatest of all time?
He draw with smaller Antuorermo for a title shot
Beat Minter, who had already 6 loses
Was pushed to the limit for 15 rounds close fight by former lightweight Roberto Duran
Getting praised for a KO of former welterweight Thomas Hearns
Defended title against unproven Mugabi Hamsho and others
Got beaten by 3 years inactive welterweight SR Leonard
Never stepped up in weight against bigger guys

For those who dont understand, my post is sarcastic, Hagler is ATG, but if you are wanna hate somebody, you can find a reason :D

Ali:
- gets title by beating probable 40 year old, wins rematch in obvious fixed fight w/"phantom" punch
- fights nobodies for next several years
- quits for 3 years
- comes back and almost immediately is beaten twice
- wins title back on fluke due to extreme heat in Africa wearing down his opponent
- "wins" several more fights that were decisions gifted to him
- loses to guy with 7 wins
- loses his last two fights where he wasn't even remotely competitive

This Ali guy should not be considered an ATG

I think you could make a strong case that he already is the best Mexican Fighter of all time or at least damn close to it. I can't think of anybody off the top of my head that I accomplished more than he has.

I'm sure Mexican fans would go *gasp* Even Julio Cesar Chavez??!!!!!

And to that I'd say...Yes...even Julio Cesar Chavez.

Right now I consider the Top 4 of the 21st century to be

1. Mayweather
2. Pac
3. Bernard Hopkins
4. Canelo

Canelo is getting really close to closing in on B-Hop, and a few more marquee wins puts him above him IMO.

I admit I shouldn't post when drinking. I get either ornery or stupid, sometimes both. Until I get to stage 9 or 10, where I can fly and become bulletproof.
