Hearn: When Joshua Finalizes New Training Team, Then Opponent Will Be Selected

Eddie Hearn, promoter for former two-division world champion Anthony Joshua, says the next opponent for the British star will not be finalized until a new training team has been secured.

Last year, Joshua parted ways with longtime trainer Robert McCracken - in the aftermath of a twelve round decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua would eventually hire veteran coach Robert Garcia to prepare him for the rematch with Usyk.

Garcia, who never trained a heavyweight, was unable to change the outcome, with Usyk once again winning a twelve round decision in August.

The partnership with Garcia will not go any further, as Joshua is once again searching for a new trainer.

Hearn would love to match Joshua against former WBC champion Deontay Wilder in the coming year - but that contest is likely not happening next.

"The communication lines are good between me and [Wilder's co-manager] Shelly [Finkel]. We've had a lot of talks, a lot of chats," Hearn told IFL TV.

"Until the training team is confirmed for AJ, we won't make any opponent selections because we want the input from the trainer. So again, we've got three or four guys that we're talking to and ready to try and make a move for. We have to make sure the training team is comfortable with that. That'll be the plan over the next couple of weeks.

"He's getting ready for his training camp, deciding who he's going to add, who he's going to bring in, and getting that ready. Once that's secure, we'll then confirm his opponent because we want the training team to be across the opponent selection as well.

"This is a run where we can see him become a three-time heavyweight world champion, but these next steps are very important. I’ve always liked AJ in that fight, but we need to make sure that if we’re fighting someone like Tyson Fury, who is an outstanding fighter, that he’s 100% ready. That’s the plan. To get him in training camp, get the correct team behind him to move him forward to become a three-time heavyweight world champion."

He's not ready to fight Wilder next.
Joshua fanboys on here are adamant that he was prepared to fight Fury (who battered Wilder) 10 days ago without a training camp or even a trainer

He's gonna fight Whyte next, 258 want the fight because they see Whyte as an easy night's work.

Otto Wallin Staying Sharp in Camp, Hopes To Face Anthony Joshua Next

"Otto is staying in the gym and sharp over the holiday season," Salita told Sky Sports. "The holiday gift that he wants to deliver to the fans is a fight versus Anthony Joshua."

"[Promoter] Eddie (Hearn) recently said that Joshua fought better opponents than Tyson," said Salita. "Otto landed more punches on Tyson than anyone else including (Deontay) Wilder and (Wladimir) Klitschko put together.

"Active fighters are judged by activity. Otto wants to fight Tyson, Joshua wants to fight Tyson. To mention the names that Eddie has been referencing for Joshua, he needs to show that he is still world class, coming off two losses [to Oleksandr Usyk]. There is no better fight for either guy."

and dont forget they can hype it up as its 2 brits with some history and a bit of a grudge / big ticket sales and PPV

it makes sense on many levels for both fighters .

They're hinting that he needs a warm-up before Whyte, but can't finalise an opponent as he hasn't got a training team.
Some of his cultish followers on here believed that he was preparing to fight on 3 December without a training team

“If I’m going to erase my memory, imagine Men in Black, they come with that torch,” he told GQ. “It has to be Dillian Whyte, south London, north London. Fury is good, but he’s a Manchester boy. I think Dillian he has more swag in general, but he’s come up short a few times.”

Im fully on board the Luke Fury train and am bang up for Fury vs Chisora IV. That's a must.

I also definitely believe that Luke Fury went into a mental decline after 'retiring'. It definitely wasn't something to put in and help sell a new book🤣

Thank goodness that Big Doofus is on board to help spread Luke Fury's truths and Micky1975 is here to accept it all at face value..

So, do you think Luke will take on Uysk next? No announcement seems to be in the offing.

I would like to see AJ fight Jermaine Franklin or Otto Wallin, who are both decent enough comeback opponents. Then a Whyte fight would be a decent shout for the summer. I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with those guys as his next opponents.
