Liam Wilson returns on Wednesday night, wants Emanuel Navarrete rematch

Former world title challenger Liam Wilson 11-2 (7) is ready to get back in the win column when he takes on WBO number 13 super featherweight contender Carlos ‘Junior’ Alanis 12-0 (4) over 10 rounds at Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old Aussie who hails from Caboolture in Queensland got the shot of a lifetime in February when he was drafted in to replace an injured Oscar Valdez 31-2 (23) against Emanuel Navarrete 38-1 (31) in a fight for the vacant WBO 130-pound title in Glendale, Arizona.

The result of that bout is now well known. Mexican Navarrete went down heavily in the fourth, spit out his mouthpiece and received a long count that saw him survive the round before turning the tables on Wilson in the ninth to score the stoppage victory.

As a relative novice in the pro ranks and largely unknown outside of his homeland, Wilson made the boxing world sit up and take notice.

Now he has the chance to bolster his world ranking with a victory over Argentina’s Alanis, 25, as he chases a rematch with three-weight world titleholder Navarrete.

“I’m excited for this fight. He’s a world-rated opponent for a reason,” said WBO number five ranked contender Wilson to Fox Sports Australia.

“He can box, good jab, good body shot but I’m prepared for him. I know he’s travelled halfway across the world to face me and I’m expecting a 10-round war. I’m ready for it.

“The Navarrete fight has been my driving motivation for this fight. I’m not looking past Alanis, he’s the guy in front of me, he’s my challenge. I feel like I’m in a must-win situation.

“Obviously down to my own pride and reputation, I want to win but obviously for that rematch and he’s standing in the way of that. I’m looking forward to the test and if Navarrete doesn’t give me the rematch, I’ll fight my way up and won’t be denied.”

Earlier this month Navarrete, 28, dominated former two-weight world champion Valdez to win a wide unanimous decision. The one-sided nature of the bout made Wilson even prouder of his effort against Navarrete.

“I know what I did against Navarrete, and that was exceptional, but to see Valdez’s performance against him – and Valdez is good, tough opposition – but watching that fight, I couldn’t help but compare myself,” Wilson said to CODE Sports. “Look at his (Valdez’s) power against my power.

“It didn’t seem like Navarrete was even flinching at his shots, whereas I knocked him down in the fourth and hurt him really badly in the sixth.

“I felt like I gave him more resistance and put more fear into him. I feel I did better than (Valdez) across the whole board, so all that fight has done is excite me for a rematch.”

Weigh-In Results From Sydney

Liam Wilson smiled with pride as the emcee confirmed a weight far more befitting his pro career.

The former title challenger was 129 ½ pounds ahead of his scheduled ten-round, regional junior lightweight title fight versus Argentina’s Carlos Alanis, who was 129 ¾ pounds. The bout is the co-main event of a Main Event Pay-Per-View show Wednesday from Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia.

Wilson (11-2, 7 KOs) fights for the first time since his valiant-in-defeat ninth-round knockout at the hands of Emanuel Navarrete in their February 3 vacant WBO junior lightweight title fight in Glendale, Arizona. Their entertaining slugfest was preceded by drama at the scales when Wilson checked in at a career-lightest 126.3 pounds.

The number was so far below his expected weight that his team suggested scale manipulation to better assist Navarrete to make weight. The fighting pride of Caboolture, Queensland’s previously lightest weight was 129 ½ pounds as a pro and hasn’t weighed near the featherweight limit since 2013 when he was a 17-year-old amateur.

Alanis (12-0, 4 KOs) fights for the first time outside of his native Argentina.

Headlining the show, second-generation boxer Nikita Tyzyu was 153.3 pounds for his first scheduled eight-round affair. The Sydney-based prospect faces countryman Jack Brubaker (17-4-2, 8 KOs), who was 153.9 pounds.

Brubaker was slightly heavier on Tuesday than he was in his fourth-round knockout defeat to Tim Tszyu (23-0, 17 KOs), Nikita’s older brother, in their December 2019 meeting. The 31-year-old from Cronulla, New South Wales has since fought at welterweight in a loss to Steve Spark and at 156 pounds, giving away a full division’s worth of weight in a six-round victory over Troy O’Meley just five weeks ago in Moore Park.

At 25, Tszyu was the same age as was Tim in his own fight versus Brubaker. The younger Tszyu turned pro last March and has been extended beyond the fourth round just once as a pro.

The upset I am referring to would be if he lost. No, I think he wins.

nikita got dropped by a headbutt in the third, clear as day, not sure how ref missed that and called it a KD. clearly he was hurt by that and brubaker beat on him for the round as a result.
