Lyle vs Bobick amateur fights: Boxrec's data may be inaccurate

Post by Joson »

I just checked Lyle's amateur record on Boxrec, and discovered it doesn't include his 1970 knockout over Duane Bobick. That fight occurred in Trenton, NJ. Evidence that Lyle won by KO can be found on YouTube, in the Ron Lyle documentary.

Shouldn't an editor look into this, and fix the mistake on the records of Lyle and Bobick?

Also, Boxrec indicates that Lyle beat Bobick by decision in Fort Carson, in 1971. However Bob's info says Lyle won by KO2. Which is the correct result?

https://boxrec.com/en/box-am/226

Strefa's data aligns with Bob's.

I read your original post. But which is the truth about the 1971 Fort Carson bout: did Lyle win by KO or on points?

I'm surprised you didn't uncover info about Lyle's loss to Howard "KO" Smith. I remember reading in the boxing magazines that Smith actually put Lyle down for the ten count.

Possibly the bout was a prison match, not fought under the auspices of US Golden Gloves or the AAU. That might explain why you didn't see it on Ron's record.

Lyle turned pro because his criminal record barred him from fighting in Germany, host country of the 1972 Olympics. Otherwise he probably would have remained amateur a few more years and represented the US at the Munich games.

There are boxing experts who believe that Lyle, if given the chance, would have beaten Teofilo Stevenson in the Olympics.

I think the problem with the result may come from the January 17, 1971 Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph. In the body of the story it states that Lyle knocked out Bobick and that all the rest of the fights ended up going to decisions. In the agate results of all the fights, it just says XXX defeated YYY with no result given, so someone could have assumed it was a decision. But in the story itself it clearly states Lyle won by a stoppage and all the others were decisions.

Makes sense. But what about the Howard Smith fight? Ever hear about that, or uncover any evidence that the match really occurred?

I only read about that fight once, in a 1975 or 1976 issue of World/International Boxing. The guy who wrote the opinion/gossip column made the claim. If I recall correctly. he said the fight happened years prior, when Ron was still incarcerated.

Assuming the info's true - and I believe it is - that means Smith could really bang, as we all know that Lyle had superb durability.

Howard 'Kayo' Smith

In 1968,

Howard was the Fifth Army Heavyweight Champion and was stationed in
Fort Carson, Colorado.

The Army Boxing Team visited the Canon City, Colorado Prison to face their
Boxing Team.

Howard {Age; 21} was pitted against the 'vicious punching' Ron Lyle, who was
a 27 year-old hardened Felon.

In their 1st-Bout, Ron Lyle used his strength to out-muscle the boxer Howard Smith
over 3-Rounds, as Lyle was awarded the Decision.

In their rematch, Howard got right on top of Ron, and never let him get off his
big punches. It was a one-sided bout, with Howard stopping Ron in Round 3.

Howard Smith >

"In our 1st-bout, I let Ron dictate the flow of the bout, and he out-muscled me. He
was very strong, but wasn't all that skilled at the time."

"In the rematch, I jumped all over him and kept punching. I really nailed him in
Round 2, and dropped him for a 3-Count. The Prison Inmates were in shock, as
nobody ever did that to Ron before."

"In Round 3, I smothered him with a barrage, because he really didn't know how to
roll with the punches or slide from the incoming right-hands. I had him out on his
feet and hanging over the Top Rope strand. The Referee jumped in and stopped it."

"After the bout, they handed me a big '3-Foot' Trophy for the 'Best Performance' at
the event."

"I told Ron that he was very good and had a hard punch. But he needed to work on
his speed, because he was kind of slow."

"He thanked me, and then told me that nobody ever hit him that hard before, even
with a Baseball Bat."
