Very interesting that this is all breaking at the same time as the Benn fight, which the BBBC has come out in opposition against... also a remarkable coincidence that IJL is endorsed on his book cover by Barry Hearn.

Jeff Hinds was an ok but average ref who had found his level and wasn't an A Star referee.
Refs like Billy Aird, who was white, got binned.
Ken Curtis is black, like Hinds, ok but average, he had found his level too and stayed where he was.
IJS was a good ref and moved through the levels and reffed a lot of good fights. He was moved forward way before McDonnell and Green who are both white.
Unfortunately in the end he had too many bad nights, especially with scoring, and got downgraded.
The piece is of a very poor standard and it shows no understanding or knowledge of boxing.
Why wasn't Hinds an A star ref considering the other A star refs? What mistakes did he ever make? I can't recall any but I could probably give you a good list of the sh*t many of the A stars have done. How many fighters has Marcus McDonnell shafted for example? That fight Campbell Hatton clearly lost was a travesty. Hinds was probably too honest if anything.

I don't think anyone in of these guys in boxing really has their own opinions based on anything objective. It's all about their own self interest. You know what tripe all of these individuals are going to come out with which is why I wouldn't be able to stomach their interviews.
Re: Channel 4 - Allegations against the BBBOC
The main problem is a star referee’s are on the referee’s committee and it them that promotes referees to A star the more they promote the less work they get it’s pretty much a closed shop

The board have many issues, but I don’t think racism is one of them. There was basically zero substance to any of the accusations in the story and good riddance to Ian John Lewis who was an appalling as judge and an even worse ref

I have been a critic of the BBBofC, but I think this is complete b*llocks.
Re: Channel 4 - Allegations against the BBBOC
It is complete bollocks !
I don't share most poster's views on Ian John-Lewis. He has undoubtedly 'effed up and underperformed at times, but so have many referees.
100% agree with margaret thatcher that IJL's stoppage in the first Enzo v Ovill bout was a terrible judgement call
IJL crying racism is pathetic and sadly, I have lost all respect for him
Coco seems close to the mark on the various names mentioned in his post, but I would go further and say Jeff Hinds & Ken Curtis were both shit referees.

you can see why they'd be put off though with this stuff happening. Agree though, I actually think C4 could produce good boxing shows. Would love to see more boxing on terrestrial TV. I like C5 just wish it would be a 7am - 11pm instead of cramming it in at 10pm

As a fighter you would always be dreading Green or McDonnell.
IJS always scored for the home fighter but he did let you have a fair fight.
The issue normally with IJS was his scoring. He did have a bad night with Enzo and Briggs but as a ref typically he was good.
Green and McDonnell actively stopped you from fighting! I get why Hinds thinks if them why not me?
But none should have been A Star class.
Re: Channel 4 - Allegations against the BBBOC
I've seen IJL have many good nights as a referee.
Got to disagree with you about Hinds & Curtis, but respect the fact you've had first hand experience of them both

ijl was consistently awful as a ref and judge. a total deer in headlines who panicked terribly. imagine being enzo and having put your heart into training for months, only to be robbed like ijl did to him. ive never seen another british ref do anything on that magnitude of sh!t. who would want a guy like that training future refs?
as a judge, constantly delivering crappy a-side scorecards too. stuff like
-having vargas-mcdonnel a draw ; vargas won that handily, 9 rounds type of stuff
-giving cat 4 rounds vs taylor
-yarde 117-111 over arthur
-miguel vasquez winning 3 rounds vs ohara davies - which was so bad davies himself admitted straight after he shouldnt have got the decision. not one person here gave davies the fight https://www.eyeonthering.com/boxing/oha ... el-vazquez and the average boxrec card was 96-94 vasquez
-linares winning 2 rounds vs mitchell
-giving 1 round to the old russian who arguably beat cal johnson (other scores were 95-95 and 96-94, average fan score was a win for the russian: https://boxrec.com/en/scoring/2722554)
-scoring the 1 sided Lynes-Purdy fight a draw (other cards were rightfully 119-109 and 117-112)
-a lot more, before even getting to stuff like scoring 30-28 for a guy who was dropped and clearly lost the round
give me a break with this a few off nights crap, maybe decades ago, but now he's had it over and over and over. not just mildly debatable calls, but absolute shockers of a magnitude that would get the average person sacked from their work. repeatedly turning in calls so bad that literally no one else in the world could understand them
and he wasnt even kicked out, just downgraded

Re: Channel 4 - Allegations against the BBBOC
I think you nailed it Coco. IJL was a good pro, tough, entertaining and value for money. When he was a fresh ref he used to let the lads fight because he knew all the signs he knew, when to leave them to it and when to part them. He even played the game as far as the 'ticket seller' was concerned. Those that been involved in pro boxing know/accept how it works. I never liked it but understood it. As I said in an above post,if you do any job for too long and too often, complacency and fatigue can set in. I think that happened to IJL. Having said that he was no better or worse than some of the other refs. I always liked Howard Foster for years but went off the boil in the end imo.Coco wrote: ↑23 Sep 2023, 16:09I don't think Curtis and Hinds were shit, both reffed me many times, but they weren't A Star grade.THEBUTCH wrote: ↑23 Sep 2023, 10:00 It is complete bollocks !

enjoyed reading these comments. It's not good practice for the Gen Secretary to be in charge for 15 years. BBBoC do not look good from this documentary. Let's see what happens and what, if any changes knock on from this.

The difficulty the board have is whether he’d been given any warnings about his performance. Robert Smith always seemed to support the refs/judges outwardly. If that was the case internally then it could be perceived that his treatment was unfair.
He should have had several warnings on file for his performance. If not, then it may be an issue for the board. IJL will point to the fact he was somehow voted ref or official of the year by the WBC and for people who don’t understand boxing that would sound impressive.

Hinds was a good ref, solid, consistent and fair.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑22 Sep 2023, 15:44 Jeff’s case definitely needs looking into, no good rationale that I could ever see for the Board not upgrading him, especially given the absolutely appalling state of existing officials under their jurisdiction (IJL certainly included in that, but by no means the only one).

Maybe he didn’t kiss the right arses. Maybe he was too straight and wouldn’t play the game. IJL is black and was an A star ref for years whilst being atrocious. They wouldn’t be racist if they put up with that moron for years on end.TheLeprechaun wrote: ↑23 Sep 2023, 06:43Coco wrote: ↑23 Sep 2023, 03:10 The woman boxer is hopeless. I do think the BBBOC needs to make effort to be more reflective of British boxers, 2 black refs and both banned is a bit rubbish
